Here's a quick round up of our time in Laos. It wasn't a long stay but it was a good one! From Chiang Mai, Thailand we picked the popular route into Laos over water rather than land by taking a slow boat trip up the Mekong river from the border to Luang Prabang. The slow boat ride takes 2 days, with an overnight on land stop in between. The main draw of the trip is to see the Mekong and it's beautiful surroundings of thick forest and river beaches, and also the remote settlements along the way, fishermen going about their business and the like. Unfortunately the first day was pretty overcast and not all that sunny so we were more wrapped up in our hoodies huddling rather than appreciating the view! But the second day ... read more

Hi all! My turn to give you a little update on what we've been up to since New Year - although not sure I can live up to the rave reviews that James' literary masterpiece received! It's taken a while to get round to it, as we've been moving around quite quickly, and to be honest we've been too busy having fun to sit down and write this up! Nevertheless thanks very much for all the comments, it's always lovely to hear from you all :D So I'll try and sum up the rest of our time in Thailand! We left Bangkok on the 2nd of January and headed to Lopburi - we were debating on going to Kanchanaburi, which is a tourist fave and has a tiger temple where you can go and sit in ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok January 1st 2011

After the fun of an 11 hour flight, sitting 3 rows apart and me (James) entertaining a 3 year old girl while her mum took advantage of the free bar, we finally arrived at our first hostel (relatively drama free). Nicole had splashed the cash and we had a private room with bunkbeds (sexy). Once we'd dumped or stuff and changed out of our winter clothes we ventured out around the corner, cautiously enjoying the culture shock and ate at a street vendor. I had noodle soup and Ncole pad thai. I'm not sure what I expected but it was amazing, even if we did pay over the odds at around 2.50 each. Quietly sastisfied we returned to our hostel, our first mission into Bangkok a successful one. The next morning we departed on an epic walk, ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » Ipanema September 10th 2007

Hello everybody, as you know Rio de Janeiro is our last stop! We haven´t taken many photos yet, and we we might not bother putting them online as we´ll be home next thursday and will be getting them developed! But we´ll see. Since we´ve been in Rio there´s not an awful lot to report, as it´s our last stop we´re treating it more like a holiday and just spending lots of time on the beaches and chilling out, and night times exploring bars etc. But we pretty much love it here, it´s a great city with loads to do and enjoy, a good note to end our travels on! We´ve also been to the Maracana to see football matches... twice! As we enjoyed it so much the first time and the atmosphere was awesome, the loudest ... read more

South America » Brazil September 1st 2007

Paraty was fairly easy to reach, a mere six hour bus journey (pah). We only stayed two nights, as we just wanted to see the beaches and head on towards Rio (can you tell we´re excited about Rio). Paraty was a quaint little town, with a main square and some shops, restaurants etc. but nothing major, no night life or anything like that. During our day we went to Trindade which is a little village half an hour away, where supposedly some of the best beaches are. We weren´t disappointed, the beaches were gorgeous, and we spent some quality time playing that timeless classic beach game that is "bat and ball" with some little wooden bats we invested in. (until a dog stole our ball haha) That might not sound like a very interesting detail, but ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo August 29th 2007

As cool as Bolivia was, after freezing in the salt flats and then exhausting ourselves riding down the death road we were gagging for some sun, sea, sand and relaxation. Time for Brazil! As some of you have already heard, our flight from Bolivia to Sao Paulo didn´t exactly go to plan... We were supposed to fly from La Paz, Bolivia to Lima, Peru; change there and fly to Sao Paulo. Unfortunately all did not go according to plan and after about an hour or so the captain got on the radio to tell us there was an electrical failure and that we had to land immediately (and with that, the plane plunged about 5,000 feet)... needless to say we were pretty terrified (Im not ashamed to say I sat there sobbing thinking we were going ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Yungas Road August 27th 2007

Once we were back in La Paz, realizing that we had less than a month left of our trip, we had to decide on the things we wanted to do the most. Although we had originally planned to go into the Amazon and do a jungle tour, after our trip to Uyuni we had both successfully caught colds and were thoroughly fed up of wearing coats, hats and gloves all the time (see, you complain about the weather in Britain!) The idea of heading to Brazil for sun, sea and sand was more tempting than heading into the jungle on what we heard was the scariest light aircraft flight of all time (everyone we spoke to said they thought they were going to die). So, we booked the next available flight to Sao Paulo. However, there ... read more

After the Inca Trail, James and I took a well deserved couple of days to rest back in Cusco! Then it was time once again to move on, so we climbed aboard yet another bus, this time in the direction of the Bolivian border. Nine hours later and we were in Puno, which is a small town on the edge of Lake Titicaca. We then caught another bus (exciting, we know) to Copacabana, which is again on Lake Titicaca but in Bolivia! The border crossing was fairly uneventful, stamping of passports, people looking at James like he’s a criminal, the normal… We only spent a day in Copacabana as it was quite a sleepy town. During that day we booked on to a half day tour of Isla Sol, which is supposedly one of the original ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco August 15th 2007

As we´ve got so behind on writing this blog (sorry, trying to catch up as quickly as poss!) Our memories are starting to fade, and I just realised that we totally left out our rafting adventures from Cusco! Not much of a story to tell, but we signed up for a one day white water rafting trip on the Urubamba river, a couple of hours outside of Cusco. It was grade 3, which is for beginners, but we had a brilliant day. Will post on the photos the company took to show you us in action! xxx... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Salkantay Trail August 14th 2007

So... the fourth of August, James and I drag ourselves out of bed at about 5am to go down to meet the mini bus to begin our trek! We were in a really small group, just us and an American family from Colorado, a couple with two boys aged fourteen and sixteen; who luckily we got along brilliantly with, and made our trek so enjoyable! Then we had our cook, porters, four horses and our guide, Cesar. Cesar was a pretty entertaining guide, not what we had quite expected! He liked to describe himself as an Inca, and as he often said to us "we are all Incas now". I think the word to describe him would be... spiritual. He loved to talk about mother earth and how the Incas loved nature, and most of his ... read more
