Since we had a storm last time we visited the North Rim we return today to hike the 3.5 miles of Transept Trail and Bridle Path Trail. Worked up an appetite so had Italian sub sandwich at the Grand Canyon Lodge Deli. Headed back to camp to horseback ride at Allen's Trail Rides. It has been about 50 years since either one of us has been on a horse, so this could be interesting. After the ride we stopped by Jacob Lake Ranger Station, which was established in 1910, and one of the very few stations that is still standing. After dinner we head out on one of our wildlife trips on FR282, FR212, and Hwy 67. We spotted 12 mule deer, and after a brief shower, we were entertained by many birds playing in a ... read more

Today we drove north to visit Zion National Park just outside of Hurricane, Ut. The park was extremely crowded so we decided to pass on the shuttle bus ride through the canyon, for a self-guided tour in our personal vehicle. On our way back to our campground in Jacob Lake, Az. we decided to stop by a spot that I saw on the map called Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. There was a nature trail, and observation deck where we watched as people snowboarded on the pink sand. This evening we attended a free landscape photography workshop by Matt Rich at the Jacob Lake Inn. His brother does a Navaho Weaving workshop on alternating nights. We did not make it back from our forest road wildlife search in time for the weaving workshop the next ... read more

Today we revisited all of the vistas we saw yesterday, but in the morning light, plus Encantada andWalhalla Overlook. Had lunch at Grand Canyon Lodge with a fantastic view of the north rim. While we were eating a storm moved through with rain and hail. This the monsoon season, therefore there is rain almost daily, but generally doesn't last long. Drove back to RV park on forestry roads. Wildlife was abundant all along the route back to the campground. We spotted at least 6 mule deer, 3 rabbits, 2 Kaibab squirrels, also know as "Silver Ghost of the North Rim" because of its silver tail, 20+ chipmunks, wild turkey, and a very quick glimpse of a mountain lion. This is open range country therefore cattle was all along the way in the forest. After only a ... read more

Today we head to Jacob Lake, Az. where we will be staying at Kaibab Camper Village, which is only RV park with full hookups near the north rim of Grand Canyon. 45 miles from the north rim, no cellphone service, no internet, no tv. Kind of nice. After getting parked by very nice and helpful campground attendants we headed for the north rim for late afternoon views and hopes of a beautiful sundown at Cape Royal. Weather did not cooperate, and even though we did not get wet, a storm was moving through the canyon. Temp. dropped from 75 to 54 degrees. Spotted a fair amount of wildlife on the main road to and from the north rim. Herd of bison, and 14 plus mule deer. The hiking trails and roads to different vistas were covered ... read more

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!! Headed back north of Camp Verde today to do some hiking in Red Rock State Park. Started early when temperature was in high 70's because temps. have been up to 100+ the last few days. We started with the Kisva Trail followed by a portion of Eagle's Nest, Coyote Ridge, and Smoke Trail. Barbara and I enjoy riding forestry roads looking for wildlife, so I picked up a forestry road map and went exploring. Did not have much luck spotting any wildlife, and decided it might be due to the heat. We rode forestry roads from Red Rock to Montezuma Castle near Camp Verde, about 35 miles. Montezuma Castle is said to be the best preserved cliff dwelling in America. Built in a natural recess of a limestone cliff some 100 ft. ... read more

A ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad is a step back in history as the train ambles along following the Verde River through Arizona's other "grand canyon". We rode in an enclosed air conditioned car, but it did struggle to maintain a comfortable temp. in the 100 degree temperatures. We had access to an open but covered car for seeing the view. Wildlife spotted on this trip was deer, blue heron, and an eagle. Drove back to Sedona to eat at a restaurant recommended by our daughter and son-in-law. The Javelina Cantina served excellent food and had a great view from the dining room.... read more

10/02/2011 Today we toured Hershey's Chocolate World Attraction. We took a ride through a simulation of a chocolate factory at work. We also took a trolley tour of the grounds, where we saw the birthplace of Milton Hershey. Milton Hershey went bankrupt several times before becoming successful in the candy business. He actually was first successful in the carmel candy business, before learning that the English was buying his carmels and then covering them in chocolate. He began developing his own chocolate factory, and the rest is history. We saw the mansion that he built for his wife Catherine. Together they started a school for orphan boys, know as The Milton and Catherine Hershey School. Later it was opened to girls, and to this day operates for any underpriviledged children. School cost the students absolutely nothing, ... read more
