After a wait of 2 years, Ken and I are finally doing our Provence trip. I know quite a few are experiencing this as well, all due to a little thing called Covid. We were supposed to do the trip 2 years ago May, and at the point it got cancelled, we, like so many others thought, no problem, we will just go in the Fall. Looking back, none of us had a clue that 2 years later we would be just starting to get back to whatever normal is. Masks, while used pre-Covid in Asia, are now just part of our lives, Covid vax’s will most likely continue and hand-washing should be now at the forefront of everyone’s minds regardless of the virus. This will be our 5th Backroads trip and Provence has always been ... read more

This was our last day and I spent a restless night, as we had been without cell or wifi for an entire week. That meant, I had no word as to my Irish visa status and if it had been processed. Cell service didn’t arrive until 5a as we were pulling into Juneau and I was dismayed to find that the visa had not in fact been delivered, which put all of our plans back up in the air. A bit despondent, we headed into breakfast and to say goodbye to our shipmates that we have come to know and enjoy. Everyone was quite subdued as no one was ready to join the real world after such an amazing trip. Ken and I joked, that heck, we can just do another week due to the visa! ... read more

Today is all about glaciers and icebergs and the entire ship is looking forward to more turquoise blue water, floating ice and hopefully some calving glaciers. The morning was spent at the In Williams Cove, at the beginning of Tracy Arm which has two very long and deep fjords with multiple glaciers. We woke to bright blue skies and surrounded by alien looking icebergs and of course Ken was all excited to “lick the iceberg”. Visions of the little kid in The Christmas Story were floating though my head, and I could just imagine getting the ever-present skiff to get him unstuck. Luckily, we had a safety briefing before getting in our kayak and the key instructions was to stay 2 kayak lengths away from the icebergs. They are known to tip over and if that ... read more

How do we top the past few days? Well, we pull into Windham Inlet and have a visual feast of whales and sea lions. Ken once again chose the bushwhack and I again, chose to avoid it at all costs. I have decided that thrashing through the forest, up steep inclines and sliding down steep slopes is not my thing. I love hiking, with defined trails, but plowing over/under logs, brush and other forestry things is not so fun for me. My morning was spent on a kayak, and the sea lions put on a show. I had a great paddle partner in Lesle (from Wash DC).and we along with 8 others loved the serenity of the water. We were out for about 2 hours and had sea lions on all sides of us, they were ... read more

Today’s activities included the opportunity to snorkel in the crazy cold Alaska waters. And there were 8 brave souls, including myself that chose to do it. While I have snorkeled a lot in the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii and Belize, I have never done so in my backyard of the Pacific Northwest. The water is frigidly cold year- round, and the viewing is very dependent on the kelp and visibility distance. So, why not give it a shot here? We all got fitted for 14mm thick wetsuits, which were like a total body spanx. Just getting the first piece on was a massive undertaking and a great workout on its own. Two pieces for the body, booties, gloves and a head covering made for quite the vision, pretty much Michelin man-like. We all waddled to the skiff ... read more

Today we awoke to a strong drizzle in Takatz Bay, which from all accounts the area is in serious need of rain. So, we tried not to complain. For the morning, Ken and I chose the open kayak, so we could head out on the water for as long or as short as we wanted, between 9a-12p. We decided to wait until the first rush was over, which became a non-issue as due to the weather, only two others were braving the drizzle. We were joined by Beth and Steven from Chicago, and we donned our life vests, skirts to keep the water out of our seat area and got a handy push off the back of the boat into the water. We explored the sheer rock shoreline and came around a point to find a ... read more

Today we are in Crab Bay, surrounded by forests, beautiful snow-capped mountains and a peaceful inlet. For the morning activity, Ken decided on another bushwhack, while I chose the “bushwhack light” or as I came to call it, the Baby Bushwhack. The normal one was a 3-hour excursion through the brush, and I just wasn’t sure I wanted to thrash through the forest for that long. Prior to landing with our skiff on the shore, we saw two small deer, which are normal for this part. They were more the size of larger fawns, but Brady, our guide said the size helps them survive when there is little to eat in the winter. Once we landed our skiff, we explored mostly on shore and saw sea stars, lots of barnacles, mussels, little crabs and some other ... read more

After a great dinner last night of either steak, salmon or a vegi dish, we had one additional nightcap and called it a night. We had left for the airport at 430a, so we were both ready for a good night’s sleep. We had entered Glacier Bay National Park, which is the least visited National Park in the country. When we saw how big and vast it was, it is quite understandable as there is no way to get there except via boat. Breakfast was a buffet that had a variety of choices, with some of the best bacon I have had in a long time. The choice of activities for the morning, would be similar for the entire week: Bushwhacking, skiff tours or kayaking. We decided to go for it right up front and do ... read more

Today ends an era, and begins a new one. Scary, exciting, energizing and one I am looking forward doing as a next chapter in my professional life. Effective today, I have retired from the Deloitte US Firm and on July 21, will be joining the Deloitte Ireland Firm. Building new teams, engaging new and old clients is one of my favorite things, and I will get to do that and more in my new role. However, in the interim, I am waiting on my Irish work visa and until I receive it, I can’t be in Ireland or my status will be affected. And due to the unusual times, the processing has been extremely slow so we are in the hurry up and wait mode, which has been going on for about 6 weeks. And, due ... read more

Today we leave for home, which is always bittersweet after a great vacation. We are both excited to be back in our own beds, watching for Charlie the seal, enjoying our awesome home and seeing our friends and family . However, leaving the sun, smiling locals, healthy/tasty food and the chill vibe is also sad. Some take-aways from our time in Bali: The people of Bali are so welcoming and gracious. They are always ready with a smile and a greeting, no matter the time of day. It never feels contrived and you do feel like a very valued guest. The food is amazing. It is fresh, flavorful and varied, with options from grilled meats/vegis to noodles to rice to smoothies. We have been careful over the past two weeks to not drink the water (even ... read more
