So between Christmas, new year, and coming home, we were based at Cath and Careys house, doing bits of different things that maybe don't warrant a write up for each day. For example laying on a beach- nothing much to write home about eh?! However I didn't want to leave a large gap in the blog (or in our future memories) so here is a quick rundown of the things we got up to: On 28th December the boys and Jan were up and out early to go fishing. Cath pre-empt the result and made plans for lunch, which turned out to be good thinking as they returned with nil catch. On their way home they popped into Caths sisters to have a look around-we were all meant to go visit there today as she has ... read more

Today we picked up another hire car and all of us made our way into Auckland for the day. Our first stop was Mount Eden where we had a great view of the Auckland Skyline. We made our way into the city and went to the Waterfront for Lunch where we met up with Fern again before going our separate ways. Rhys had booked to do the Auckland Bridge Bungee, but as you had to pay $20 each to spectate, only Jan and Den went along which was a shame as it would have been good to watch. I did think about doing the bridge walk, but wasn't too sure, I wanted to go up the Sky Tower as I'd toyed with the idea of doing the 360 walk (I don't know why as I hate ... read more

After a food and drink fuelled Christmas Day arrived the Rugby match to burn off all the recent good living. Forget six nations, forget World Cup yes today was the all important Northern hemisphere V Southern Hemisphere New Zealand v Wales Rugby game of the year! Such was the importance of the day, Den and Daryl came out of retirement for the occasion, and Cath made her debut for Team Jones. There had been some strong discussion about who should captain the team, some cast doubt on the capability of Carey Jones, suggesting his strategies may not work, but those with faith invested it accordingly, and Carey stepped up to skipper the side full of injury. What would go first? Gareth's foot? Daryls shoulder? Rhydians shoulder? Rhys quiff? Daryls other shoulder? Daryls hip? Daryls Knee? Dens ... read more

The wind down has begun so not really an awful lot to report on today. Most of us popped into town for a look around and a bit of last minute shopping for bits. I got Daryl a few bits from the $2 just as stupid things to open and put in the stocking. The boys played golf in the afternoon, and in the evening, Jan, Laura, Reuben and I went to a carol concert at the local Salvation Army centre, which was nice to do, even though it still doesn't feel right singing Christmas carols whilst wearing flip flops! Also the words in New Zealand differ somewhat from what we sing back home, so we must of sounded a bit strange but we kept on with the only version we knew! Back at the house, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua December 23rd 2013

We definitely picked the good days for the beach as when we woke up this morning it was dull and rainy. We left to drive to Rotorua, and could tell when we were near due to the smell. Reuben wasn't impressed and wound the window down to get rid of the smell-unbeknowing that is where it was coming from, so resorted to sticking his fingers up his nose after that! Rotorua has the nickname 'Sulphur City' due to the hydrogen sulphide emissions which give it a smell of rotten eggs-nice! It was one of those days where the was plenty to do but everyone couldn't seem to decide on what exactly. We found somewhere to park and had a 30 minute discussion about it, then Daryl suggested a cafe where we had food and spent a ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Mangonui December 22nd 2013

Well I did manage to make it up the Mount this morning, we met Laura and Rhyd at the bottom, the boys ran up, the girls walked to the top. the views were great up there and it was another nice sunny day. we could see clearly over to the port of Teuranga where two huge cruise ships were docked. we ran back down and bumped into Gareth and Shell who were in the midst of a monster 10 miler then back for a quick shower and change ready to meet everyone for breakfast. We went back to the slow fish, and had another great breakfast, I was surprised we'd all managed to get a seat in there-we must have taken up most of the outside seating area! Now when you ask Reuben what he's done ... read more

Carey, Cath and Daryl were up bright and breezy to walk up the Mount-I decided to have a little bit longer in bed, and meet them for breakfast afterwards. We went to a little Cafe on the beachfront called the Slow fish-recommendation of Caths and what a lovely breakfast it was. Carey was trying to persuade Daryl to jack work in and move out here, and i was assured he'd be sorted out with a visa by the time we returned from our afternoon trip! Afterwards Cath and I picked the other girls up from the main house as we were going to the vineyard for lunch. It was Mills Reef winery in a little place not far from the port of Tueoranga, called Bethlehem which was nice and festive-especially for Jan who is finding the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Mount Maunganui December 20th 2013

Friday 20th December Now the first I'd ever heard of Black Friday was when it was on the news last month informing us that it was the discount shopping day after thanks giving and before Christmas. I was then to learn that in Wales-this is something entirely different in that it is the last Friday before Christmas when everyone goes out drinking-either way no matter which interpretation you choose-its probably wise to avoid Cardiff on either of these days! In New Zealand, I'm going to call it Red Friday, as that is what Daryls back now resembles after I missed a patch on his back whilst rubbing in the sun cream and now apparently it's all my fault he's scarred for life (his words not mine). Today we were heading for the beach. Mount Maunganui to ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Matamata December 19th 2013

We'd told jan and den nothing more than that we were leaving at 10am and all they needed were comfortable walking shoes. Today we were going to Hobbiton! This is the set of The Shire and home of Bag End where Lord of the rings and The Hobbit were filmed. Jan had planned on cooking a Cottage Pie today, and not to let a day out get in the way, she was up frying the mince before 8am. The drive was a couple of hours although when we got to Matamata, Middle Earth wasn't very well signposted at all. We'd asked for directions and been told two different ways, Gareth was threaders and ready to turn back and go home, everyone jumped on the food box for the BBQ leftovers when we next stopped to ask ... read more
