I was half asleep when I heard a rustling and a clicking of all the light switches then BOOM! On came the light. The conversation followed: Pearl, what are you doing?! My camera wasn't charging so I'm plugging it back in here. Turn the light off! For gods sake, you are so selfish! Just put your blinders (eyemask) on! She'd bloody done it this time. I looked at my phone-0457. I laid there and tried to get back to sleep, but it didn't come. I looked at the clock again 0542. We were meeting for breakfast at 0715, so thought I may as well get up. I got out of bed and found the light switch by me-boom, on came the light. I found the light switch by Molly Brown, Boom on came that one too. ... read more

So would you believe I actually had a good sleep?! I only had to call Molly Brown once for snoring as I was dozing off, but other than that I was undisturbed, and felt good for it. I met everyone for breakfast at 0715 and it seemed everyone's spirits had lifted and a good nights sleep had done everyone the world of good. I had porridge and honey for breakfast which was lovely, and just a nice change from eating something fatty and oily. It was a shame we only had one night at the hotel, especially given that it was so nice and had a swimming pool. They were cleaning it in the morning though so weren't able to use it then either. Never mind, we were venturing to somewhere even more relaxing: Lumbini. This ... read more

The wake up call came at 0345 and I was up and about getting ready. I think I've gone beyond tired now, as I had no problem getting out of bed, I don't know how I'm functioning, on approx 9 hours sleep in 3 days. In reception at 0430, everyone was looking weary and feeling drained, especially Keiran the Ozzie girl who had the worst hangover (I'm glad I went to bed when I did) Shakira slept though her wake up call and was a bit late and also feeling worse for wear. I didn't think she was drinking but apparently she'd polished off the gin vodka and whiskey-it seems chica has the breaking strain of a kitkat. I'd said to Molly Brown this morning that the room sharing wasn't really working too well, and would ... read more

After the lack of sleep on the night train I was so tired I didn't think I'd have trouble sleeping. Turns out that a full afternoon of snoozing for Molly brown wasn't enough and she snored the whole night. I was sick of her by now so woke her up every time she started. Just as I was managing to drift off she'd start again, damn it, if only I could drop off first!! My alarm went off at 0430 to which she groaned and didn't move. I showered and made my way downstairs for 0500 the time I thought we were meeting. Turns it it wasn't until 0530 but it allowed me time to have a couple of coffees before heading out. We got a tuk tuk to the same place on the river Ganges ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi March 8th 2015

Time to leave once again for jahansi, and yet again another crazy ride to the train station. Sue once again sat in the front but thankfully this time there was a working seatbelt. As it was by now 8pm and dark, we made a new discovery-that everyone not only drives like madmen, but they do so with full beams on. We stopped at a little shop on the way and I was in dispair when the driver did what looked to be a U turn, and instead of going back on himself on the opposite side of the road, chose to reverse that part instead to pull up outside of the shop-all with oncoming traffic beeping us out of the way. By now I actually didn't feel worried, it's almost like I've accepted the driving and ... read more

Varanasi The train finally rolled into Varanasi at around 11pm. We walked across the road to the hotel which wasn't too far. Crossing the road was again an effort in itself, luckily Raghu is not also a tour guide but acts as lollipop man when required (which is much of the time!) the hotel was lovely, really clean. Raghu handed out the room keys, I figured I would sleep through anything tonight so wasn't too fussed about sharing with Molly brown. Raghu did say that I could have my own room for the rest of the trip for an extra £200 for the week. I did think about it. On one hand I hated sharing with Molly, but on the other, I was a bit peed off that that was money for my Everest flight and ... read more

Asia » India » Madhya Pradesh » Orchha March 7th 2015

I woke up at 0930 after a good 9 hours sleep. My earplugs were still intact, and I'd only briefly heard Molly Brown once. It was quite light in the tent though so I don't know if it was this or the snoring that stirred me but I soon fell back to sleep and didn't even hear my room buddy shower and leave. I felt so refreshed, and hopefully that may have been the last of the Jetlag on its way out. I managed to catch the end of the breakfast buffet, where only Raghu was dining so I joined him and was offered a cup of Masala tea. He told me it was very gingery which made me think of Reuben and I resolved to call it a Reuben brew from now. It was really ... read more

I had THE BEST sleep ever, and was up and out for 7am as we were getting the train at 8pm. Initially the train seemed like it was on time as it was pulling into the station, but then Raghu said it would be 3 hours late due to engine failure! We were told to expect this from Indian trains, so it was a case of stand and wait. Ten minutes later we were hurrying to get on, it was only stopping for 5 minutes so with bags as well you have to move fast. The first lot of carriages whizzed by, and it was almost like an overcrowded prison on wheels. There were arms sticking out of barred windows, and it looked crammed to the rafters. Our carriage arrived and thankfully it was the better ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra March 5th 2015

Today we were leaving Rajasthan the setting of Rudyard Kiplings jungle book (another Disney film I've never seen) and heading back to the state of Utter Pradesh. Our destination: Agra I was really looking forward to visiting Agra, because 1. It is the name of an Indian takeaway in Sleaford near my first posting at RAF Cranwell, where my friend Ronnie and I had many a happy curry. The deal was he'd drive to pick it up and if I ran in to fetch it I could have his left overs-(I left that posting a stone heavier than when I'd arrived) And 2. Well the most obvious reason of all. It is home to the Taj Mahal, one of the 7 modern wonders of the world, one of the most beautiful buildings and iconic landmarks on ... read more

I wish I could say I woke up refreshed, unfortunately I woke up groggy, Just before 3am. Despite wearing ear plugs, Molly Browns snoring thundered around the room. After about half an hour and no sign of letting up, I got up and gently tapped her back. 'Pearl, I'm really sorry but your snoring is so loud' I said. I'm on my side she replied. Don't you have earplugs? I told her that yes I did have earplugs and I was wearing them, but could still hear her snoring as it is really loud. I got back into bed and after about half an hour, slowly started to drift back to sleep when ZZZZZZZZZ the snoring started again. I put my iPod on thinking a bit of low music may drown it out, but about 3 ... read more
