Bridge over the Rio Grande Gorge

THAT'S A BRIDGE
Wow...how many engineers were employed to build that???

What gorgeous countryside to be hiking in! I hope I get the opportunity to visit one day. Not to mention eating some very fine food from the sounds of it, yum!

Santa Fe and more
Glad everyone enjoyed the sand dunes and Colorado. I always enjoy going to Garden of the Gods. It is so peaceful. Happy travels.

Will was accepted by both Bangor University Law School and King's Inn...
a difficult choice to make. But it's truly amazing how random connections can work out!

A great family gathering
Sounds like a lovely wedding. Sorry to hear about the quick changes with your mother. Sounds like she is adjusting fairly well. The bride looked lovely. Interesting observations about the park. Indeed you must be correct. Ohio has some amazing state parks, sounds like this one is not their equal.

Thank you for your suggestions about keeping the carpet clean
I have not put it on the floor, but have hung it on the wall, so that should keep it cleaner. I agree that I must respect the labor that went into the carpet...three girls (womens' hands are too large), working 4 hours per day (any more and the quality suffers), for three years.

very nice
That's very nice of the waitress to offer breakfast for free and also very nice of you to invite that lady at the other table! Good deed attracts good deed! Last year I had a stop over in Helsinki but didn't have enough time to explore - so lucky you to see some of it! :)

Thanks for your comment...
I always try to be outgoing and warm with people, just because that's the right thing to do. It's an added bonus when such networking has a good result. I wish I was in better shape to enjoy Helsinki (and the Baltics) and the weather allowed for exploration by foot.

I've started so I'll continue...
A fascinating beginning and so good to know that you have managed to retain the family photos. One down, only 189 or so to go!

I didn't have anything to do in 2011...
and I knew I had to do something with the thousands of slides and prints from my Dad in the garage, so I bit the bullet and digitized everything. Fortunately, I had Travelblog where I could post my memories and the pictures. Have fun reading!

Dunhuang...
For some unknown reason I can't reply to comments by clicking on reply, so here's a new comment in response to yours. I was not able to take pictures of the Mungao Caves...they made me check in my camera at the entrance so I couldn't even take pictures surreptitiously. Those with smaller cameras might have been able to sneak a camera in, but pictures in the caves would have required a flash, which the guides would have noticed right away. I didn't see anyone taking pictures, but you can buy pictures at the gift shop. I don't think TB permits scanning and posting post cards, but that seems to be the only solution if you want pictures in your blog.

Crescent Lake...not more than a mud puddle

DUNHUANG
Magic shot this one. I was away camping when you did this part of your trip so only shared it in patches so glad to take time to enjoy it now. Dunhuang and Mogao Grottoes have always been on our wish list. I've been to 4 of the Top 5 Grotto sites in China and Mogao is said to be amazing. Tell me...were you able to take photos in the grottoes...or if forbidden did others do so? At Maiji Shan in Gansu it was forbidden but I noticed the Chinese tourists did so anyway without penalty. I was paranoid my camera would be confiscated so only took pics surreptitiously!

A great blog
We will use this in planning our upcoming trip to Switzerland. It is great looking at the old photos! We may even take that hike. We'll see.

Deja Vu...
I have wanted to visit Labrang for many years, and wasn't allowed to do so when we visited China in 2009...so this was a dream come true. Although I enjoyed walking in the footsteps of my parents, the best part was interacting with the Tibetan monks and pilgrims...showing them the pictures my Dad had taken 65 years ago; and having them stare in wonder, amazed that there were even foreigners here that long ago. When I took a portrait of the woman pilgrim I was thinking of your portraits...I probably should have gotten even closer.

These jolly young pilgrims insisted that I take their picture

DEJA VU?
Hope your trip to Labrang satisfied your hopes & desires in visiting the place of your parent's wedding that took place so long ago. Trust you had feelings of excitement and fulfillment in completing this part of your quest. What a privilege to have done so.

Yum schnitzel
Although I imagine McDonald's tasted good to Will after his illness. Nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you need to familiar or comfort foods. Ham and pickle sandwiches sounds interesting. What kind of pickles. Love the fact that you had time to post on Song of the week. Good job.

These things happen!
Glad you made it home, albeit a bit delayed and tired. It often concerns me that I might pre-empt things as well.
17th April 2013

Glad to hear you made it back home safely. I hope that the pain in your feet was not gout, but if it was I hope you are recuperating warmly and comfortably back at home. It sounds like Will had some great insight into his opportunities in law both in education and affordable tuition ($7500/2 years?!!!) and potential career paths in Europe. I'm still chuckling over the cross-country skiing and beautiful girls portion of your last blog. I hope we meet before you head off on your next trip, and hopefully, you will be more mobile on your feet next trip around. Thanks for sharing!

Lovely historic town
Sounds like you have had a wonderful time, Bob. Tallinn reminds me a bit of Bavaria in Germany.

Making connections
It would be ironic for you to travel to Helsinki and eat at the Colorado Rocky Mountain Grill. That is terrific that Will is more excited about his future after talking with Annette. Over all you had an amazing trip and wonderful that you could share it with Will.

Bob....come on Mc Donalds....
Bear in mind....since we arrived in Buenos Aires in July....the kids have managed one Burger King...and not a single McDo...with me! We are heading that way in a few months...good to see they have wifi on buses...that will keep my addiction to TB on...and touring places with hopefully no rain...normally rain never travel with us....we wish! So, what's next? And tell Will....it's not how they look that count...it's how they (sorry, no more wifi)...
