Ready to relax after a great concert, Sunday was our day of organised fun in Hangzhou, namely a trip to its West Lake and surrounding historical monuments. The entertainment and began immediately in the form of our tour guide Tony, who by the end of the morning's coach trip had covered not only various Chinese customs but also his and his family's own life story. The first stop on our tour was the Lingyin group of ancient Buddhist temples. Brandishing incense sticks as we entered the central courtyard, our first job was to light them, Bear Grylls style, from blazingly hot fires in stone troughs, before bowing towards each temple and and making a wish. The insides of the temples were dominated by huge statues of Buddha and of the gods representing each year of the ... read more

Saturday was a pretty intensive day - after a small, carb-filled breakfast (bread rolls galore!) we set off on the coach for the Grand Theatre. Our rehearsal consisted of numerous seating rearrangements, dangerously unstable and uncomfortable rostra and plastic stools, and of course, fantastic singing from us and the soloists ;-) Having survived this, we returned to the hotel and popped across the road to a lovely Korean restaurant where the cutest young woman named Kizzi served us. She was at the Hangzhou Normal University studying to become an English teacher and frequently practised with us (both at lunchtime and in the evening, as we decided to return to the same restaurant after the concert!). The concert was pretty amazing - a great response from the audience, especially when we started singing Mo Li hua. They ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon April 13th 2014

I found it particularly difficult to wake up Monday morning, all these early mornings, late nights and jet lag are starting to get the better of me! Packing consisted of running round chucking things at the cases, and retrieving the copy of moli hua from under the dressing table. Mostly sure that there was nothing left in the room- we went for our last toast and sweet buns brekkie and headed to the airport to fly to Hong Kong! There were so many of us at check in the flight people gave up and I ended up helping a Chinese lady distribute boarding cards (who needs passports eh?) and bleeped at security for no apparent reason which ended up in me getting frisked .... Nothing bleeped when I was checked though so I think I was ... read more

Sorry once again for the delay, the internet access has been on the scarce side so now that we have settled the problem (sort of!) let's carry on with tales from our Asian adventure. So today we moved on to the city of Hangzhou about a 3 hour coach drive away from Shanghai. We arrived at the hotel which happened to be located next to a series of elevated highways so not the most picturesque of views! Despite this we were upbeat and went off in search of lunch which turned out to be this really great Korean restaurant just down the road ( as you will find out in later blogs we went to this restaurant a few times and fell in love with a lovely young Korean woman, Kizzi, training to become an English ... read more

Asia » China April 10th 2014

By Thursday I think most of us were starting to get our head round the time difference .... But I personally still can't understand rice for breakfast!! So after a very cultural bowl of coco pops we ran to the coach and went for our morning rehearsal :-) we sounded a lot better than the night before, way more energy and less flat! When the rehearsal was over and David had told us to 'take it easy this afternoon' we raced off to catch the metro back into central Shanghai (another fight with the ticket machine- but with tickets costing about the equivalent of 30p I have no right to complain!!!) To go to the yuyuan gardens. The surrounding bazaar- a collection of ad hoc stalls was completely amazing, a maze of brightly coloured gifts and ... read more

Asia » China » Shanghai » Pudong April 9th 2014

So, onto day 2 (written by guest choir tour members Sophie and James!). We woke up to an amazing selection of breakfast goodies, including the most delicious pancakes with maple syrup and fruity fillings. After having stuffed ourselves with savoury and sweet dishes, we got ready and hopped into a taxi to continue our sightseeing experiences in Shanghai. We decided to continue our bus tour, sitting on the open top deck with a similarly strong wind gust (but thankfully not as perilous as the bridge yesterday!). After seeing various parks and high end shopping boutiques (think, Cartier, Dior, etc.), we stopped off at the Jade Buddha Temple. There were some beautiful authentic Chinese buildings housing Buddhas with different faces and personalities, and an unofficial tour guide informed us about praying to particular Buddhas and the parts ... read more

Asia » China » Shanghai April 9th 2014

Just to explain a little bit about this trip, over the next 2 weeks the Bach choir are in Shanghai and Hong Kong to perform 4 concerts in various amazing venues. This blog will probably be about the fun and games that happen in between all the music making and what it is like experiencing Asia for the first time. Mostly I (Helena) will be writing it but with additions from my 2 glamorous Assistants James & Sophie. I also have to apologise for the fact that this is very late but this mainly due to lack of time and lack of Wi-Fi. After a flight that took just over 10 hours we all found ourselves in Shanghai early in the morning ready to take on the day fuelled by jetlag. After getting to our hotel, ... read more

North America » United States » New York » Newark July 28th 2013

Just starting to get into the DC way of life and already it's time to leave. We left the hotel just after 9am, bags FULLY packed and laden with complimentary chocolates and water. After a short uneventful cab ride to the Union Station, we sat down to a last USA breakfast of pancakes, bacon and maple syrup before boarding the train to Newark Intl' Airport. Now as we are sat in the train with not much to do, we have decided to write one last blog about what we have learned from our last two amazing weeks in the U S of A!! Don't leave any money or valuables in your case when travelling by plane in case those pesky transit workers decide to have a root through it. Don't board a plane with brazilian school ... read more

Well today didn't really have much of an agenda as it was our last day so we decided to take it easy! After finally leaving the hotel we made our way over to 14th street to get some breakfast but when we discovered that we were probably walking down the longest road ever and the place we wanted to go to was a long way away still, we found another restaurant serving brunch and went there instead. It turned out to be really good and so we started the day with mimosas (bucks fizz) as it would be rude not to!! We hopped on the bus and headed over to the zoo close to our hotel as it was a lovely day today. But when we got there we suddenly lost all of our excitement and ... read more

Security was no barrier to us (well to me) today, in fact a good laugh was had with the guard about my little fiasco yesterday!! Once IN the Library of Congress, we joined a tour led by a rather pro-USA, anti-EU feminist guide who denied Helena her moment of glory for answering a question correctly because of her "incorrect" pronunciation of aluminium..... might have had something to do with the British burning the ilbrary down in the past .... oops ;) Despite our differences, it was very a interesting visit and an amazing building!! Then once again trusting the information on the map, our lunchtime destination was "Tortilla Coast" where we enjoyed lime margheritas (our IDs were actually accepted this time) and delicious quesadillas. The yumminess made up for the fact that, as our social status ... read more
