Geo: 42.87, 74.59On arrival in Bishkek we went straight to the Hostel called Tunduk, what a shit hole. Which is very judgmental (according to Lisa). We asked if they had a room… sure… you can sleep on the floor next to the wall over there…. Hum shit hole.Ironically some days later Sarah and Thomas arrived in Bishkek and did stay one night, yep only one because…. Yep you guessed it… it is a shit hole.Okay so I had best qualify my statements. Upon arrival we were greeted by no-one… after wandering around for a while a strange Kyrgyzstan chap began to show us around. When I asked about our Machina he said I do not own a Machina so I do not know if you can park on the street.. WTF… then proceeded to offer Lisa ... read more

Geo: 42.87, 74.5879The trip to Bishkek was quite leisurely as we knew the embassies would not be open until Monday so we camped out a couple of nights. The first night we headed down a track to a reservoir and headed for a clump of trees big enough to hide our vehicle and found that there waseven an older chap who seemed to be the caretaker in a very old van.. he had 4donkeys, 2 baby donkey,) one dog and 1 cat & 1 kitten… excellent. Darren greeted him, indicated using sign language that we wanted to sleep next to his "caravan" to which he seemed to be okay with that idea, indicated for us to park in a given spot out of the wind and the deal was done. Crazy given we could not even read ... read more

Geo: 40.5151, 72.8083Entered Kyrgyzstan via the mountain pass and then rapidly descendeddown a bad road to the actual border gate where we were greeted with warmsmiles from the officials.Lisa was suffering badly from the altitude and I think they took pity on us… after the normal array of questions… do you have any AK47's…no.. do you have any pistols… no… do you have any drugs…. No… a quick look into the canopy is confronting enough for any border official to just say… you can go with a quick flick of the hand.Into Sary Tash to get some money changed where we also met aDutch and German couple who were riding bikes.. hit it off and went to theirguest house and had lunch…Lisa was still crap so off we went and could not believe thedecent, I think ... read more

Geo: 37.4897, 71.553The Pamir Highway is one of those amazing roads. It follows the Panj River which is a wild and woolly river that doubles as an international border with Afghanistan. We met up a German Couple we planned to travel through China and Pakistan with and have hooked up to drive down this crazy road. The pictures speak for themselves really.Despite what our imaginations conjure up, all looked quite peaceful on both sides of the river. The afghanies are trying to cut a road along their side. The first time they blasted quite close to our camp it was a little unsettling but after about the 10th blast it was obvious all was in order. Well assuming the blast did not upset our side that is.... read more

Geo: 36.7081, 71.5729The southern route nicely takes you down the warmer souththen nicely drops you into the valley that separates Tajik from Afghanistan.Right from the onset the road is bad, the recent rains having caused some chaosand further damaged an already damaged road.So the first night we try to get close to the river and camponly to be sprung by some Tajik military doods so were not so keen for us to doso… eventually found a camp site under some trees and reasonably well off theroad. Cooked dinner and was about to make a coffee when Lisa exclaimed Darrenthere is something running at your foot… well even before I looked I jumped andalmost brained my self on the canopy…. Looked around and in the torch light sawthe biggest ugliest nastiest spider I have ever seen…. Good ... read more

Asia » Uzbekistan » Samarkand August 12th 2015

Geo: 39.6576, 66.9476Having driven from Samarkand towards the southern entrypoint to Tajik we committed a crime in Usbekistan… yep we camped… in actualfact we free camped.. in a creek just off the road where we hoped we would notbe found.. It had been a long day. The road is bad and had numerous Policecheck points made going slow…. Oh and I also got stopped by the police twicefor traffic infringements… Yep I kid you not. So the first one is wholly toblame in the white line spray man… if the road is straight and you can see atleast 1km ahead then why the freak paint a solid white line… dick head..So apparently overtaking is not allowed, silly me havingwatched 10 million Usbeks do the same I got caught.. This time not too bad thepolice man was ... read more

Geo: 41.3775, 64.5853We drive through green fields sheltered by green leafy structures, commonly referred to as trees from the border. Very exciting. Uzbekistan has a regulation that foreign aliens, that would be us must be registered each night. Hmmm means we need to do the hotel thing which can be a bit painful. Often it is less effort to camp outside cities and catch a taxi when we need to the tourist attractions rather then struggle to find a decent hotel with car parking. Anyway we snag a good one so have halled up for a couple of days, R&R. Bukara has so much to see that UNESCO declared the whole of the city a world heritage site. After Iran however this was pretty routine stuff so we had a quick wander around and seem to ... read more

Geo: 39.0733, 63.5786We spend a couple of days waiting for our entry visa for Uzbekistan to start. In these parts visa are issued for pre arranged dates and our estimates were out by a couple of days. Not to worry things could be worse. The border crossing was relatively uneventful. Our car was searched pretty carefully, the security man doing the search asks Darren if we are carrying any Ak's. Seriously… we are tourists not the Taliban we have no machine guns. They laughed and seemed comfortable that we were genuine tourists and moved on to other areas. Our first aid kit was given the three times over. Fortunately for us we had a list of all prescribed medicines we were carrying which was taken, photocopied and researched. After a good half hour they gave us ... read more

Asia » Turkmenistan » Mary August 6th 2015

Geo: 37.6621, 61.7596The roads deteriorated fairly rapidly,, the buildings looked decidedly different and nothing was obvious. We had some direction from a cyclist indicating we could get local currency in a Paint shop in the next village. Sure enough we followed his directions, got some money and were on our way. Iran was hot, Turkmenistan is hotter, wow indescribable. We drive slowly to Mary as there are next to no street signs and our mapping software has no details for Turkmenistan. The Russians have built irrigation channels all thought the border sections of the country which look pretty inviting. We pull up near one and there are some locals swimming. Still reeling from the Islamic thing it is weird to see people relaxing in not full clothing, we strategically sit in the shade and wait for them ... read more
