Mike and Aiya

Forgive me, for I am not a gifted story teller.....

....but what follows will be a narrative of two travellers whom I have had the pleasure of befriending. Now, I can not proclaim to be a wordsmith, though whenever I find myself reminiscing about these two, who will be introduced in good time, there never seems to be a shortage of anecdotes, true or otherwise, which tickle me to no end. There's something both timeless and ephemeral about my earnest friends. See, they had a certain way about them.... it's as though they were well suited for what they were doing, and for each other. Though I may be getting a little too sentimental and ahead of myself at this point. So with that in mind, let me pause for some time, and welcome you to the beginning of the adventures of Hardcore and Chainsaw!

Hi. I got the pictures developed, so I don't feel like I have any sort of obligation to continue writing this blog, but now that I've read the last entry, all those images come flowing back to me... Just to forewarn you... this one's dense. It's way early in the morning. I think it's a friday morning still; We've just departed the bus, and are finally in a new country. The thought that this road, this Khao san road, is just the gateway between Western culture and Eastern culture is screaming in my head. "this is not actually thailand" i think to myself... but that's ridiculous, because of course it is. Khao san is this gloriously filthy tourist trap...and it's all new, but all old at the same time. I notice that there are many large ... read more

The bus pulls slowly into traffic, and I sink slowly into the worn leather seats of the bus, and slip my hand into Jen's hand...for the first time in Thailand, I feel relaxed, and so does she. We know, at least for the next half hour, where we're heading. We have no idea what's gonna happen when we get there, aside from the fact that we're gonna have to put those backpacks back on and step off the bus, back into that sweltering heat, but we put that thought out of our minds, and sit silently on our bus, staring at everything. Me, I'm looking at the cars, and buses; I'm noticing the highway that's just like every other highway I've ever traveled; I'm peering around the bus, staring at the other travellers, feeling the desire ... read more

We waffle a little bit....lingering outside the airport. We're barely in Thailand, barely out of America.... this strange mystery land that looks suspiciously like all the other terra firma I've ever traveresed. I feel the urge to ask Jen what we should do... but I feel that's a little futile, in this situation. She's weary, from travelling, and now, the new unknown of what to do.... I feel my grasp of the situtation slowly slipping into quiet desperation... We amble back into the airport... ignoring the taxi drivers who are seemingly quarantining themselves at the railings. The airport is more or less deserted, save for a few cleaning crews, and a few sleepy travelers... and sleepy cleaning crew members. Jen's hungry again... me, I have no appetite whatsoever. There's a few food stalls in the airport, ... read more

Alright, so at this point in the story, we've been enduring the experience of arriving at a destination. But life's a journey, not a destination. So what happens when you live to get to a destination? And then arrive at that destination? I'll tell you what happened to us..... It's got to be somewhere around 4 am; We're taxing to a gate at the airport in Bangkok. Peering out the window at a low slung building which looks marvelous, partly because it's an airport in Thailand, and partly because I recognize it as an airport....which is a relief....to know that I'll be able to recognize things with my eyes for what they actually are...with out any intimate knowledge of some special secret....not that I was expecting to land in a rice field, or a coconut plantation...although ... read more

"Seat backs and tray tables in their..." It's been dark for I don't know how long. The airline apparently only packed 4 movies, because I've seen two of them twice. And only one of them was worth seeing. ("the young victoria" if your wondering) I didn't even realize that I would be watching the same movies after we made our connection at Narita airport in Tokyo, Japan. Which brings me to the adventure of making our connection. So, we got our immigration form in the air, which we filled out (in transit, just passing through, thank you very much)and we're instructed via the airline crew that we we're to proceed to customs, and international security check, and then to make our connecting flight, back at the same gate, on the same airplane. Does that make sense ... read more

Hello and welcome. I've been state-side for some time now, however, I still want to share with you as much of my trip as I can recall. I would have liked to report while it was happening, but it was just too exciting, and I was in no mood to slow down, or to spend money on the internet or time at an internet cafe. Of course, those few statements are enough to start making the memories come flooding back, but I'm gonna try and be dilligent in the recital of events as they happened, because even though we've been back for a month and a half, the memory still feels very fresh, and this is an awesome way for me to relive all the events of the trip. So, with that said, let's start with ... read more
