Motorhome News from Europe 40 12th - 21st June 2010 Adriatic Riviera, Porec, Pula, Rijeka, Dalmatian Coast, Zadar, Knin, Paklenica, Krka National Park, Plitvicka National Park, Zagreb, Badacsony - Lake Balaton, Salfold, Tihany and Lake Velence. 'Dobrodosli' - Welcome, to Croatia There's a strong feel of the Mediterranean as we drive south into the Istria Peninsula from Slovenia along the Adriatic Riviera. They're still working on the motorway as we cross the border into Croatia; great earthmoving machines removing mountainsides of rich terracotta soil and limestone, and toll-booths at the latter stages of development waiting to pounce on the weary traveler. Croatian customs cast a cursory glance at our passports as we passed through control out of the EU on newly surfaced tarmac beside fields of vines, poppies and olive trees - and roadside stalls offering ... read more

Motorhome News from Europe 39 3rd - 13th June 2010 Off to pastures new - Eastern Europe - To Slovenia via Bavaria and Austria .........and a brush with the law in Austria Dover - Dunkerque, Luxembourg, Neuschwanstein Castle, Berchtesgaden, Oberammagau (above panorama), Grossglockner Pass, Zell am See, Julian Alps, Lake Bohinj, Lake Bled, Ljubljana and Portoroz Things were a little different back in 2004 when our epic 18 month motorhome journey through Europe started. But Eastern Europe now beckons the tourist; the strife of war has passed into peace and harmony with any luck and adventurous motorhomers like us can now venture into calmer waters with happy hearts. There are now five of us on board our Burstner motrohome, Bertie. There's Janice the navigator, Todd, our well-travelled bear, Suzie, (Todd's blonde floosie), me, David, the driver ... read more

Cruising the Nile. Egypt. Luxor to Aswan. May 17th - May 24th 2010 We pass a memorable landmark today, with this, our 100th blog, sitting on the Nile - watching the scenery float by. Agatha Christie may have painted a worrying picture of cruising on the Nile, but it's not quite all doom and gloom. Iceland might still be sending clouds of volcanic ash over Europe creating chaos in the air, but fears of flight delays melted away just two hours before our flight booking-in time. So, it's not all gloom and doom. England scored a resounding win over the Aussies in the World Twenty20 cup cricket final the night before our departure, and we did eventually negotiate our way off the jam-packed M25 onto minor roads to reach our overnight hotel at Gatwick before they ... read more

Motorhome News from Europe 38 A Postcard from France 5th - 20th October 2009 Loire, Limousin, the Dordogne, Rocamadour, Cordes, Najac, Albi, Carcassonne, Andorra, the Tarn Gorge, Le Puy en Velay - and a few hiccups on the way. Despite our many trips to France by car and motorhome over the years there are still just a few areas in need of further exploration. The call of family ties draws us there once again this year, to Limoges, to see daughter Sonia, her partner Sebastien and the newest member of the tribe, Fred, now two and several bits and doubtless getting into all sorts of mischief, before heading further south. The €euro/£Sterling exchange rate might have deterred many Brits from travelling across the channel this year, but sometimes it’s necessary to bite the bullet and do ... read more

'Salamat Datang' - 'Welcome', to Malaysia and the Cameron Highlands 8th December 2008 Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands It's another public holiday in Malaysia. At the last count, there were 14 such 'holidays' for one Religion, National celebration or another, throughout the year. This week it's Raya Aidiladha, or Hari Raya Korban, a Muslim festival marking the end of the hajj pilgrimage period. Perhaps it's all these holidays that keeps this mlticultural society at peace. They're playing Christmas music in all the shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur: White Christmas (some hopes!) and Jingle Bells, the shops are bedecked with tinsel and Santa rides his sleigh around the Christmas trees, swathed in lights ten floors above us. The shops were busy on Sunday, escalators ferrying people in all directions, cheerful faces, smart retailers, b ... read more

Motorhome News from New Zealand 8 4th December 2008 Waitomo Caves - Kawhia - Cambridge - Hamiton - Auckland ........and farewell, New Zealand. Death would come quickly beyond the sealed door beside us, even on an early summer's day in New Zealand. For it is officially summer now with the coming of December. But a bitter wind drifts through the crystal sky here, none-the-less. We are high above the clouds. The sunlight dazzles our eyes as it continues on its uninterrupted journey across the heavens. It is - 52 degreesC out there - a vicious wind howls and whistles on the gleaming metal, the instruments record wind-speeds in excess of 90 mph and at this height there is little oxygen to speak of. A violent death, however quick, were we to venture outside! For the time-being ... read more

Motorhome News from New Zealand 7 30th November 2008 Wellington - Wanganui - Taupo - Taumarunui - Stratford - New Plymouth - Hamilton - Auckland Returning to The North Island for more mountains, volcanoes, and old friends. The clock is ticking ever faster now. The rhythm rising a notch each day as we approach the end of our journey through New Zealand. That's how it is with holidays, isn't it?. As spring rain continues to fall along the western reaches, New Zealander's thoughts of summer holidays and barbecues on the beach mingle with the jingle of Christmas, now modestly evident in some shops. Still without our phone, (goodness knows where it might be) we were hoping to meet up with our friends Brian and Kathryn at the ferry terminal as we finally prepared to leave The ... read more

Motorhome News from New Zealand 6 19th November 2008 Farewell to South Island Greymouth, Punakaiki (Pancake Rocks), Kohaihai, Oparara Valley, Westport, Lewis Pass, Kaikoura, Blenheim, Queen Charlotte Track and back to Picton. New Zealand's South Island roads have been such a joy to travel; courteous and careful drivers with all the time to get wherever, whenever. Just very occasionally a car appears out of nowhere to overtake on a bend or a sleepy European visitor pulls out on the wrong side of the road. There are traces of accidents here-and-there however; crosses with flowers in the most unexpected places - drink or speed the most likely causes, or wheelies, Saturday night's twisting tyre marks left on the tarmac from hand-brake turns and high-speed swerves. The road north from Greymouth was quiet, a leisurely drive past rocky ... read more

Motorhome News from New Zealand 5 10th November 2008 Stewart Island - Milford Sound - Wanaka - Franz Josef Glacier - Lake Matheson Beyond South Island and back, out along the Fiords in the west. There's a signpost at Bluff, that small point of land at the very southerly tip of South Island, New Zealand. The sign reads: Bluff. 46 degrees South, 168 degrees East. It is 18,958 Km from here to London as the fly crows - but only 35 km to Stewart Island, our next destination. We're taking a short holiday from motorhoming, an overnight away, to do a spot of birding. Meanwhile, our Australian travelling companions, Brian and Kathryn, will be heading 'somewhere north' in their own motorhome. If we can find our mobile phone we'll be able to catch up with them ... read more

Motorhome News from New Zealand 4 31st October 2008 Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, Mount Cook, Queenstown, Glenorchy, Lake Wanaka, Arrowtown, Moeraki, and Dunedin to Invercargill - with a few Aussies in tow. A Kiwi friend returned from holiday in British Columbia, Canada, a week or two back, a little disappointed and unimpressed by what he saw. 'We have it all here,' Greg said, checking his empty wallet. 'It's just a bit bigger in Canada.' We really can't believe that's true - but let's take a closer look a bit further south to see if we think he might be right. Our last blog left us in Christchurch last week - a City created with Cambridge and Oxford in mind, a garden city at the coastal hub of the flat Canterbury Plain, a grid of broad ... read more
