Leslie & myself have been full throttle going at the fundraising. We have been emailing journalists, organizations, restaurants, etc. to see if we can get any form of donations. Right now we are seeking cash or kind. We decided to host couple of Moroccan themed events to invite the general public to try food, drinks, entertainment for a small cover. Also, we we do a silent auction or raffle prizes. Tonight, my husband & I were dining at Fanoos Persian restaurant in Sandy Springs before going over to The Punchline for a friday night comedy show. The owner of the place, Mr. Jalal came up to our table & started conversing with us about our backgrounds & interest in Persian food. He even got me a complimentary Kamakazi & some rice samplers. The food was delicious ... read more

This is a question that keeps coming up as I talk about my Volunteer plans, and fundraising. A logical question, with a very logical answer. Most International Volunteer Organizations are non-profit, which means their success relies heavily on the contributions made by volunteers. Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS) is non-profit, and to run this organization from the home office to each placement site takes a lot of money, and a lot of time. Upon signing up for my program, I was sent a packet of useful information. In this packet, there was information on the Moroccan culture, the placement site, what I can expect, contact information for the in-country drivers, and phrases I would find useful in-country. Needless to say, CCS is there guiding me from the start. Volunteers are given program managers to answer any questions, ... read more

“I only have a kitchen, because it came with the house.” This is a sign in my kitchen, and is very true! I’ve never been one to enjoy cooking, I’m too impatient to cut, chop, mix this, mix that, and cook! It’s too exhausting! I also have a hard time following directions, I even messed up Easy Mac once! My poor husband has to suffer because of this, he’s from Louisiana and has a mother who cooks fantastic meals, so he’s having to get used to frozen pizza and peanut butter and jelly! As I begin my fundraising efforts, I decided I wanted to put on a Moroccan themed dinner party. This meant I would have to COOK! I researched recipes and found one that sounded good, and seemed very easy to make. Simplicity in the ... read more

I lived in India with my grandmother till the age of 17. She was a professional volunteer social worker for most of her life as her husband did not want her to work for money. As a child, I would accompany her to blind schools, orphanages, Rotary clubs and many other places. Once when I was 10 years old, we were at Mother Teresa’s orphanage in Chandigarh, where I overheard a comment that got tattooed in my brain. The nun who was running the orphanage said that they had about 99 baby girls out of 100 kids at any given time. When my grandmother exclaimed, “Why no boys?” she said the boys get adopted right away but nobody wants the girls. That day I decided that when I am an adult I will come by and ... read more

We are a group of 5 women travelling to Morocco to volunteer for 2 weeks. Here is a little bit about each one of us.... Cheryl Garin is an IT project manager whose love for travel has taken her to destinations as far-flung as Antarctica and Iceland. “My passion for travel was cultivated by my parents. A good deal of my childhood was spent in the back seat of a car on family road trips all over the United States. Back then international travel was not common unless it was business related. But through those experiences I developed an insatiable curiosity for other places and cultures.” Cheryl volunteers for Friends of Literacy in Knoxville, Tennessee tutoring English as a second language and reading skills. Her desire to help others and her appetite for roaming fit the ... read more
