Today we finally got to Paris. We took the train in from Reading to town to catch the Eurostar over to the continent, and we werent the only ones on the train who were doing that. Mum ended up giving all sorts of motherly advice to a girl who was booked in to go to Paris but her friend had grabbed her sisters passport instead of her own and might not be able to make the train in time. Of course Mum told her to stop being silly and to just go on alone, but she was a bit of a drama queen and who knows what she ended up doing, we didnt see her again. She was even talking about getting her friends dad (who was general of some section of the army or something) ... read more

This morning we got up early and headed out to the Cotswolds to have a tour of some of the pretty little villages that i have been hearing so much about. We took some little country roads to get away from traffic a bit and to have the time to appreciate the scenery, and ended up stumbling across the prettiest town that we saw, Bibury. We then went on to the more well-known Bourton-on-the-water, Stow-on-the-wold, and the Slaughters (my personal favourite, purely because of the name). We did a bit of window shopping in Bourton, but once again were a bit stuck about how to transport any delicate and breakable christmas decorations home. The Slaughters didnt have much in the way of shopping, except for the Mill shop, and we didnt stop for long in Stow ... read more

This morning we got up early and headed out to Stonehenge, which was an ambition of mine to see, although i was a little disappointed that you cant walk through the stones anymore and can only admire them from a distance. Didnt quite have the same ambience that i think it would have had if i could have got closer to them, but they were still majestic and quite awe-inspiring to consider how long they had been standing like that and how on earth they got there. However we didnt stay that long contemplating them, as the wind was bitingly cold and my eyes were streaming from the freezing wind, so it was back into the nice warm car (after purchasing a rock cake and an english fruit mince pie, both much better than i had ... read more

Well, what an eventful couple of days. We took the train to Guildford and picked up the rental car from the train station. The guy at Hertz was incredibly unhelpful and we set off without any decent maps or directions or anything. After a quick wander through the town centre we headed off to find Hindhead. After a much shorter drive than expected we reached Hindhead, however it looked nothing like how Mum remembered it. We wandered up and down a bit and then asked at a pub, who told us that although Hindhead is on the highway, the actual town itself was a little down the road further! We took off down there, and located the Woodcock, where Mum worked in 1974. We also found out that they had changed the name of the town ... read more

Well, the first couple of days have just flown by. We got into the hotel around 1pm Monday afternoon, got quickly settled and then went for a wander (hike) in Hyde Park. Saw a whole lot of well-fed (ie, fat) squirrels and pigeons. Then had another wander at Harrods, saw a whole lot of food to die for and a whole lot of people acting rich. Then on our way home through Hyde park we stumbled across the christmas fair, with lights and rides and a skating rink, so we took a stroll through that and bought some steak sandwiches and lollies. Weather was cold but clear, but when it started getting dark at about 3.30 in the afternoon we really knew that we werent in NZ anymore!! We had an early night that night because ... read more

Well, here we are, passing time at the Auckland Airport, bored to death while waiting for our plane. Plane ride from Palmy was good, Mum just kept pretending it was just a bumpy bus. :) We even made it tothe airport on time, how impressive is that!!! Christmas decorations are pretty, but nothing compared to what they will be when we get to Europe. Everything is overpriced, but i guess we will have to get used to that.:) Havnt remembered anything that we have forgotten yet, so thats a good sign. Looking forward to catching up with Tesni in a few days. ... read more
