Another cold night. But the doona work a treat once again. Because we have pretty much everything loaded into the car we have breakfast over at the restaurant before checking out. The delivey man for the bread etc that comes in from Tom Price was telling the story of his staff in the bakery wanting to warm up in the coolroom where it was 4°C rather than the -4°C that was the outside temp. Our final farewells to Debbie, Steve, Veronica and Moyle then it's time to get moving. By the time we head off it is 8:10. The day has started to warm up it's now just past 9°C. At least in the car the sun coming through the windows and sun roof along with the heater makes it feel much more pleasant. Once into ... read more

3 July Another cold clear night, but the doona with 2 blankets worked beautifully. Toasty warm in bed whilst outside the temperature plummeted once again into the minus zone, -4°C this time, although there are reports around the camp of -6. Either way it got pretty cold overnight The morning brings yet another day of clear blue skies and light winds. After breakfast Sandy and I head off to Dale Gorge. Dale Gorge is at the opposite end of the park and involves around 45k of driving to get there, mostly on rough corrugated unsealed roads. We arrive around 10:00 and head off on our hike. We decide to do Fortescue falls and Fern Pool first, then trek through the gorge to Cicular Pool. The decent into the gorge is by the standards we have been ... read more

2 July The night is freezing cold, -2 overnight to be exact but the bed is very comfortable. The only problem is that if you roll over the part of the bed that you roll into wakes you up because it is cold. We have used the blankets provided in the Eco Tent, we'll try out our own doona tonight and see if that is any better. This morning is a late start to the day, after breakfast whilst Sandy is in bed reading I start trying to work out if for our return trip I can get by without having the roof racks and basket on the car. After some shuffling around of left over food as well as different bits of gear we have used throughout the trip I think I have it worked ... read more

1 July Up this morning and head over to Debbie and Steve's for breakfast. Our fridge is plugged in over there on the 12v caravan battery as well as having the the cereal and bread. Sitting down to breakfast the sun feels good on the back but the wind, although only light seems to be from the Antarctic (or desert). It's freezing cold when it blows through. Debbie is sitting reading her kindle with her beanie on as well as the hoodie pulled over her head and another jacket on top of that. Yes it's cold, but not quite that cold. Steve on the other hand decides that the solar panels on top of the caravan may be a bit dusty and not recharging the batteries to their optimum, so it's up on the roof for ... read more

30 June Another cool night, 7c at 7:00am but there is not a cloud in the sky. A very light breeze seems to cut through to the bone as soon as you leave the direct sun and step in to the shade. But in a strange way it feels good. After breakfast we are to head off to Oxley lookout and Hancock Gorge. Before we head off I decided to adjust the shock absorbers on the rear of the car as it was feeling a bit soft and loose during the drive yesterday. They have a range of 1 - 12 on the Off Road Boss heavy duty adjustable shocks, the one on the left was set to 8 which should be fine if not perhaps a little too high and when checking the one on ... read more

29 June A cold cloudless night gives way to a fresh crisp morning of around 6 degrees according to the thermometer in the car. A cold shower over at the ablution block because they only have solar hot water, then back to the tent for breakfast. After breakfast it's off on our first walk....Joffre Gorge lookout, a 25 minute round trip from our camp site. Debbie decides to join Sandy and I as the others stay back at camp to join us later. Our first glimpse of the gorge and you soon realize what this place has to offer. Deep red gorges with crisp clear water running through them, the contrast of the red rock against the blue sky and the occasional tree or shrub protruding through a crack in the rocks provides a contrast in ... read more

28 June As we get ready to farewell the Turquiose water of Exmouth and head for the ochre red dust of Karijini we have some last minute grocery items to collect as well as some bread from the bakery then it's time to hit the road for the 700k + drive. As we leave Exmouth, there ar lots of sheep that keep wandering onto the road, fortunately we do not hit any of them, though there were several episodes of hard braking to avoid them. Along the way there are lots of slow moving caravans and motorhomes. I don't know how they do it but they always seem to turn up just as they approach solid white lines where you can't overtake them. Naturally lots of roadtrains along this stretch of road also. Once we turn ... read more

Wow! What a day! I had a poor night's sleep due to the excitement of diving with the whale sharks. They did not let me down. The morning started well, no need for the alarm I'm up showered and breakfast before getting dropped off at the dive shop around 7:30. Ironically I was the last one to arrive. After saying farewell to Sandy it was into the minibus and off to the dive boat. 16 paying divers (myself included) and 6 crew, which included a marine biologist as well as a professional underwater photographer. All crew had a minimum of instructor level diving credentials. After a 30 minute drive we were at the boat and loaded on. A 30 minute "test" dive to check the competency of all divers. All OK and we were back on ... read more

A busy day above and below the water. We started the day off with a trip to Yardie Creek for the boat tour. I'm glad we did. It was a fascinating place once you have a guide point out the different features of the area. The creek is more like a lake created by a sand bar that occasionally opens to the ocean. But not at present. Up the creek we went to see the gorge and some rather precarious but spectacular rock formations. It turn's out this is all limestone that has been stained by the coloured soils around the area. It still looked pretty impressive. There were also quite a few black footed rock wallabies. According to our guide they don't have the typical feet of a kangaroo or run of the mill wallaby, ... read more

A game of 500 using "Komen rules" last night. Not sure who won as the rules kept changing along the way. This morning was a late start before heading out in both cars to Turquiose Bay and the various bays and inlets along the way in the Cape Range National Park. Some beautiful scenery andThea water gives a clear indication to where the name Turquoise Bay comes from. After doing some exploring on the land at the different lookouts and beaches we had a light lunch before heading into Oyster Stack bay. One of the premium snorkel bays along the coast. Debbie and Steve left us at this point whilst I got changed and went for a dive into the water.no sooner than the head is underwater and the colours and life seems to abound. I ... read more
