Friday, December 27 Headed out on a cool, rainy day by bus to tour Malmo's chocolate factory (Malmo Choklafabrik). The original company started in 1888 and closed down in 1995, a few years after having been bought out. A young couple started a new, small chocolate factory in part of the original factory building and are making use of some of the original chocolate recipes. The tour consisted basically of a talk in a small museum room of the history of the factory and tastes of several kinds of chocolate. And of course at the end of it we all bought a variety of chocolate with our 20% discount! We found the Traingel Train Station nearby and took the train out to the Malmo Arena and the Emporia shopping mall. The mall was mostly high-end shops ... read more

We flew out of Regina the morning of December 22. COLD weather that we were happy to leave behind. Our flight was a little late as the plane was coming into Regina from Toronto where the Ice Storm of the Century was occurring. That didn't bother me so much as the fact that we were flying TO Toronto to connect to our flight to Europe. We ended up flying out of Regina about an hour late, at 12:12PM, by the time de-icing was completed but we had a 5 hour wait scheduled for Toronto so no worries there. As we approached Toronto's Pearson Airport we could see that the roads, trees, buildings were all completely covered in ice. The runway was clear at Pearson airport but the taxi lanes to the terminal were covered in really ... read more

Sunday morning, September 29, we walked around the parks near our place with Kenn & Karen then stopped for lunch at Restaurante Biennale on Via Garibaldi. We each had a different pasta dish and they were all great! And they had free wi-fi with a really strong signal with great high-speed service; our new favourite restaurant! The great internet service sure helped me upload my blog update with 107 photos. It started raining after lunch and we headed home to play “Heads-Up” on Chris' iPad and card games and had lots of fun, snacked on cheese and meat for supper then headed to bed early. Monday morning Kenn & I headed out early to walk all the way across Venice to the San Croce neighbourhood to see about the stove repairs. Incredibly, they were able to ... read more

We've been in Venice for one week now, with no internet at our house, so we're having lunch at Restaurante Biennale on Via Garibaldi near our house and using their free Wi-Fi. There are LOTS of photos here so scroll down and go thru the pages if necessary to see many, many scenes of Venice. Sunday, September 22, 2013 We started our morning in Zurich with a quick coffee and pastry in the room before walking the short block to the train station. The station is huge and well organized with good signage so we easily found our train to Venice. We climbed onto coach #07 to find our reserved seats #86 and #88 but the numbering system was all mixed up. Some seats together were paired liked #40 and #42 and others were like #50 ... read more

Our flight arrived into Basel last night and we caught the train directly from the airport terminal to Basel's main train station, directly across the street from Hotel Victoria. Hotel was nice, comfortable bed. Quick sleep, breakfast at McDonald's next door, then caught the train to Zurich. Our hotel, the St. Gotthard, was just one block from the train station so we ran over, dropped off the luggage, then ran back to the station and caught the train to Frauenfeld where Nicolas and Sylvia met us. Short drive to their little cottage on a couple hectares of land, surrounding a little lake full of fish and freshwater lobsters! It was a beautiful location and we had a lot of fun catching up with Nick and Sylvia, eating lobsters, drinking wine from Nick's vineyard, eating fondue, and ... read more

Saturday, September 14 was cool and rainy, as usual these days. Garth and Sue have a very early flight out tomorrow morning so I found them a CHEAP deal on an airport hotel for tonight for only 89 Euros, making their Sunday morning much less stressful. We started to look over train schedules for ourselves to get to Charles de Gaulle airport and even though our flight wasn't until 11AM I decided better safe and un-frenzied so I booked us a room at the Ibis hotel too. So we cleaned the apartment, did some laundry, replaced supplies we'd used up (bought them a nice potted orchid for a thank you gift) and we headed off by train (9.50 Euros each) to CDG airport. Train was simple and easy, bought our ticket from the machine, only one ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris September 13th 2013

Friday the 13th was yet another cool and rainy day here but with only two days left in Paris, we didn't let that keep us from getting out into the city. We decided to check out Marche Belleville as it only runs on Tuesdays and Fridays. Our Lonely Planet guide book describes it as a "Fascinating entry into the large, vibrant communities of the eastern neighbourhoods, home to artists, students and immigrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East." We took the metro to the Belleville station and the market was right there as we exited, down the middle of the Boulevard de Belleville, from rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud to rue du Faubourg de Temple, between the Belleville and Couronnes metro stations. It is a tight alley, under a tarped roof, between two long rows of stalls ... read more

Another cool and cloudy day on Tuesday but good enough to spend the day outdoors again. We've been wanting to go to the Rue Cler Market to really immerse ourselves in the Parisian atmosphere of the daily markets, although the indoor and outdoor markets around our apartment are great. But Rue Cler is highly recommended so off we went, along with a list of two other market areas to check out. It's just a few blocks from the Eiffel Tower and has been a pedestrian only street since 1984. The metro stop was a couple of blocks away from the market and when we found it, we were immediately disappointed. It is only two blocks long, the stalls were sparse, shoppers even more sparse, just a few tourists taking photos and not much of anything else ... read more

Saturday morning was sunny but a little cooler; a perfect day to explore a castle! We chose the Vincennes Castle, about a 1/2 hour by Metro across the city. Vincennes is one of the largest and best preserved castles in Europe. Construction started in the mid-1300's by John II (John the Good) and was completed by his son Charles V (Charles the Wise) around 1370. It served as a military stronghold, a prison, an arsenal and various Royal residences over the years. The wall and ramparts around the castle enclosure is 1,200 metres long, lined with nine towers originally 40 to 42 metres high, surrounded by a 27-metre wide moat filled with water until the end of the 17th century. The 2.6 metre thick curtain wall, rises some ten metres above the average level of the ... read more

This entry covers a lot of museum activity including the Orsay, Rodin, Notre-Dame Crypt, St. Chapelle, Cluny, Orangerie, Pompidou, and lastly a trip to Versaille. Monday morning, after walking for what seems like MILES every day for the past 32 days, we decided to take a bit of a break today......by WALKING all around our neighbourhood! LOL Chris and I took a casual walking tour of the streets for a few blocks in each direction around our home. This was not as easy as it sounds as NONE of the blocks are square but mostly triangular and every second corner has 5 or 6 streets branching out from a roundabout or a square. There are parks and squares, beautiful architecture, great little shops and cafes everywhere. We ended our walk with stops at the markets for ... read more
