May 28, 2012 (Chengdu) We finished the day with an elegant and elaborate dinner in a historic district of Chengdu called the “kuanzhaixianz” (meaning wide and narrow street). With massive round tables and impressively large lazy susan, we enjoyed an impressive Sichuan meal with our hosts. The photos tell only part of the story. It featured some musical entertainment and a changing face artist – a Sichuanese art form where an artist performs a rapid sequence of face changes (mask swaps) faster than the eye can tell.... read more

May 28, 2012 (Chengdu) Monday afternoon was a formal ceremony celebrating the tenth anniversary. It was held in the impressive conference center at SPPH. It included dignitaries from SPPH and the Sichuan Health Bureau. In Chinese tradition many dignitaries from both sides spoke with responses from Dr. Skuta and Dr. Farris on behalf of DMEI. Following the formalities, Dr. Skuta, Anderson, Farris and Yun Le presented overviews of DMEI, its research and some specific projects we were working on. Drs. Skuta, Anderson and Farris were presented with honorary professorships and Dr. Skuta presented a glass vase to Dr. Fan. Following the ceremonies, Dr. Farris was mobbed by the press - I'm sure "numbah won docktah" has his photo is in 100 million homes in China this week! :)... read more

May 28, 2012 (Chengdu) We had our early morning Tian Chenlou breakfast (always interesting for the uninitiated) and then the SPPH van picked us up to tour the SPPH hospital. This was Dr. Skuta's first visit to Chengdu, so tour of both the research and clinical facilities gave him a good overview of the magnitude of the work being done here as well as the overwhelming flow of patients as we walked through the facilities. The core genomics laboratory was one of the research highlights and then a general tour of the hospital and the ophthalmology clinics and wards gave us a synopsis of how SPPH hospital is set up. Ubiquitous in the tours here are red-clad young attractive nurses that politely guide you through every step and turn...quite'll see them in the photos.... read more

May 28, 2012 (Chengdu) This is the tenth annual visit we’ve made to China. To celebrate as only the Chinese can, we spent most of Monday reflecting on the achievements of the past decade but also looked ahead to where this milestone will lead. We were surrounded by bright red banners with yellow and which Chinese characters. Only when the obvious “DMEI” word was included did we realize these banners were up for us Monday morning was spent in high level discussions of potential collaborations the partnership could generate including clinical care, resident and fellow education (including exchange programs) and basic science and clinical research projects. Participation of high level officials from Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital (SPPH) and Dean McGee Eye Institute (DMEI) allowed for some formal but reasonably open discussions.... read more

Chengdu (May 27, 2012) We have had our welcoming dinner at the famous Tian Chenlou Hotel in Chengdu with our very gracious hosts. Dr. Fan is Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at SPPH and he hosted a dinner for us. Along with Dr. Fan were many familiar faces: Robert, Regan, Jim, Lucy, Susan Wei, Nina, Lisa, Doris and several new faces. Dr. Gene Anderson joined us arriving in Chengdu from meetings he had participated in Beijing, along with Hans Cao. During dinner we had an extensive discussion about the plans for the week including strategic meetings, 10th Anniversary celebration on Monday; a scientific symposium on Tuesday and Wednesday; clinical outreach in remote township on Thursday and a visit to West China Hospital at Sichuan University on Friday. Dinner was the typical hospitable eclectic Sichuanese food ... read more

Hong Kong Airport (May 27, 2012) After a nice breakfast at the Habor Plaza Lounge, hotel checkout and a quick cab ride to the airport we're off to Chengdu. We had a small scare with Annie Chan coming up with a bag missing, but it was in the second cab. Check-in went smoothly. We made it through all the queues for ticket counters, luggage checkin, customs, immigration and are now at Gate 502 waiting for Air China flight to Chengdu. Found the NBA playoff game 7 Boston vs. Philly at the gate! If we can find Thunder/Spurs in Chengdu it will be awesome! Next update from Chengdu...hope we have internet access!... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island » The Peak May 26th 2012

Hong Kong (May 26, 2012) After some dim sum and a nap for most of us, we headed off to see Victoria's Peak - the highest point on Hong Kong Island, and a great way to view the city from the top. We took a shuttle to the ferry, the ferry to Hong Kong Island, a cab to the tram and a tram up the mountain. The line up for the tram up the mountain were quite long - estimated at an hour, but it moved fairly fast and after about 45 minutes we packed into the tram for a steep ride up the mountain. There is a six storey observation center at the Peak with an open observation deck at the top. You're always at risk for low clouds and fog obscuring the view from ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon May 26th 2012

May 26, 2012 (Kowloon) We had a great breakfast on the 20th floor Harbour Plaza Lounge and then met in the Hotel Lobby to go start exploring. There are a few "traditions" Dr. Farris has initiated in Hong Kong and we went out to do them all: the Regal Jewellry store, Lee's of Paris shirt tailors, "meat on a stick" at Kowloon Park with Mango jelly and then dim sum. A little twist in our escapades today included a torrential downpour halfway through our jaunt through Hong Kong. We all bought cheap umbrellas and are now quite soaked, but had an enjoyable time. Resting up a bit and then off to Victoria's Peak and dinner at Bubba Gump's on the mountain top overlooking the city. Enjoy the pictures!... read more

May 25, 2012 (Kowloon, Hong Kong) Well Cathay Pacific fligth 885 was 14 hours, 38 minutes and 45 seconds from take off to landing...enough time to get acquainted with your seat. I'm pretty sure the seat molded me rather than the other way around. I broke it up into seven 2 hour segments and that seems to work well. One movie for me (Rum Diaries with Johnny Depp), some computer work, read a newspaper, listened to music. Felt quite good upon arrival. Flight was full, one screeching baby, but noise cancelling headphones help that problem. Queues for immigration were quite long, but move very quickly and efficiently. Knowing the layout of the airport is helpful, so we navigated immigration, customs, currency exchange and cab lines quickly. Cabbies were friendly and helpful...even creative to get all the ... read more
