June 7, 2014 (Kowloon) After a nice restful night we have recuperated from our journey and are looking forward to some exploring in Hong Kong today. Suspect we'll try dim sum, wander to Kowloon Park, then trek up to the ferry for a ride over to Hong Kong Island and the tram up to Victoria's Peak . Forecast is for rain sometime today, so I'm sure we'll get wet somewhere...not that we can tell the difference with the humidity levels here! Breakfast in the hotel was great - nice mix of Western and Asian style foods and fruits.... read more
Checking in to the hotel.
The gang's all here!

June 6, 2014 (Kowloon) A quick Friday evening cab ride from the airport with five of us and all our luggage secured by bungie cords in one cab. We made it to the hotel and checked in by 9:00 pm. Its so impressive to come from the airport and slowly see this amazing city unfold. Such a vertical city. It is hot and humid (I think it always is) but with a clear view of Victoria's peak and we had a glimpse of a sunset as we landed. Immigration was effortless, everyone's luggage made it despite the tight connections and we all are feeling pretty good. Even though I tried not to sleep so I can convert quickly to the 13 hour time zone change, I think I dozed off for a few hours. The flight ... read more

June 6, 2014 (Hong Kong) after an uneventful 14 hours in the air we have landed safely in HKG! Gathering luggage (for those who check luggage), money exchange and off to Kowloon to the hotel. Feel quite good actually! :)... read more

June 5, 2014 (LAX) All aboard! Well, with some inimitable Farris maneuvering, we got the bulkhead with a football field of leg room. Since Yasser's boarding pass was for the earlier flight, he's in the bassinette on the bulkhead. Snuggled in for takeoff! :)... read more

June 5, 2014 (Flying over the Four Corners...) Just a quick introduction to the DMEI team traveling this year. Our fearless leader is Dr. Brad Farris - neuro-ophthalmologist extraordinaire and the self proclaimed "numbah won docktah" in southwestern China. This year his fellow, Dr. Kevin Lai is joining us, despite my best efforts at trying to leave him off the re-booking exercise. He's finishing up this June and will be going into private practice, so let Dr. Skuta know that Kevin is paying for all the amenities on this trip! :) We have two senior residents: the ever inquisitive, smooth talking Yasser Elshatory who thinks he can squeeze a family reunion in the LAX international terminal between flights... and Tyler "baby face" Sorensen who has kept a low profile, trying to avoid the inevitable blog barbs ... read more

June 5, 2014 (37,000 feet above Colorado Springs) As you can see by the attached inflight progress map provided by Gogo.com we are about halfway from Chicago to the city of angels. The other form of Colorado Rocky Mountain high! I think I see Bill Clifford down there! It actually feels good to be sitting down on the flight for a few hours now, given the chaotic last 12 hours. The flight from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles (direct) was cancelled due to "mechanical" problems last night around 8:30 pm. American Airlines said there were no options to get out. I called the American Aadvantage desk and got very helpful agents to help us figure it out. Not that easy rerouting five people on a transcontinental trip...but they managed to find enough seats. One problem was ... read more

June 4, 2014 10:00 PM (Oklahoma City) American folks pulled it off and got all five of us leaving OKC at 6 am via Chicago, to Los Angeles and on to Hong Kong. Leave earlier, arrive later, see more airports, but at least we're getting there in time for our commitments!... read more

June 4, 2014 (Oklahoma City) Well just getting ready to put the finishing touches on the packing and American Airlines called at 8 pm to announce our flight to LA was cancelled. This makes it impossible to make the LA Hong Kong connection. We have five people traveling on the team so getting five seats less than 12 hours before flight time is quite an ordeal. AA desk is working hard to get us there. Its starting off OKC-Chicago-LA-HongKong...but maybe we can stop at every town over 10,000 population on Route 66 ! I'll keep you all posted if/when we get confirmation. Minute 49 of endlessly soothing MUSAK on hold....... read more
