Weekend Outings Shenzhen is a big city and even though I tried I didn't get to do and see everything but I thought I'd talk about a few of the things I did manage to see and do during the weekends. The weekend after Destry and I went to Hong Kong, Laurent, Destry and I went to Happy Valley. Happy Valley is a theme park in Shenzhen which also has a water park. I'd never been to a proper water park before so the aim of the day was to get on all the water rides. However, when we arrived at the park the water section wasn't open so we went on a few of the theme park rides, including a roller coaster that uses a swing shot motion to activate the car, it was pretty ... read more

Ever since we started sharing an apartment together Destry and I had been talking about taking a trip to Hong Kong Disney so on May 12th after we finished work off we went. We had a hotel booked and went straight there. We had decided to only spend one day at Disney and as there was a bus back to the Chinese border straight from Disney we chose the Sunday as Disney Day. As we were having a fun filled weekend we spend the Saturday at Ocean Park, in Hong Kong which celebrated its 40th birthday this year and was also Hong Kong's first theme park. The park is split in to two sections, the Waterfront and the Summit. There is a 1.8km cable car and 1.3km funicular railway joining the two parts of the park. ... read more

MACAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had a three day weekend so Laurent and I decided to gamble our money away in Macau. Our hotel was in Zhuhai which is the Chinese side of the border. WE got the ferry there and went to the hotel to drop our bags off. We walked to the border and after making our way through started the walk to the HOP ON, HOP OFF bus depot. Well, we thought we were walking that way. We walked for hours, stopping for lunch and to use the outside gym equipment! By the time we reached reached there, we realised we had missed the last bus. We carried on walking and ended up at the Ruins of St. Paul's. They are the ruins of a 17th century Portuguese church, when it was first built it was ... read more

I had to work Saturday but doing that got me Monday and Tuesday off work. Laurent and I had a hotel in Hong Kong booked for the weekend and were leaving Saturday evening. Saturday day was another sad one, last Saturday Val left and this Saturday Fiona and Laura left, the Irish left me too. They were going back to Ireland. Destry and I met them for lunch to say good bye. After work on Saturday I met Laurent and we went to Hong Kong, we didn't arrive until late so after getting some food we went straight to bed. We had already planned the things we wanted to do while in Hong Kong so on Sunday we got the tube to Tung Chung where there is usually a cable car ride to Ngong Ping but ... read more

Dapeng is a sea side town split in to two parts. There's the newer area of Dapeng and the older area. The older area has a fortress, a temple and an area with lots of bars and restaurants (called the new fortress). From the Shenzhen Dapeng is around an hour and a half journey by bus. As Laurent lived in Dapeng, the Irish and I all spent some time in Dapeng. We had only been to the new fortress and not visited any of the historical parts. So one weekend the four of us decided to go there for that reason. Unfortunately Val was leaving to return to America that day so couldn't join us. We had gone out for a meal the evening before to say goodbye. We started by going to the fortress, a ... read more

It was the middle of March and Laura and I decided to try our hike again. We did more research and went a completely different direction to last time. This time our hike started in the sea side town of Xiaomeisha. We had read that the hike could take up to five hours and as we knew we would want to stop for photos and the bus ride took over an hour we arrived in Xiaomeisha at around 10am. We started in the right direction and we were doing well. We followed the path and came across a viaduct. We crossed it and found the way we wanted was blocked by building work. We were starting to think China didn't want us to hike, there was always building work. We couldn't turn right and turning left ... read more

Hit and Run, six countries, one month, two girls! We had one month off school for winter break. A whole month to explore Asia. After looking at a lot of different routes and working out the best financially Val and I decided to do Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, The Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. Our trip to Taipei Taiwan was the one I was looking forward to the least, but I was wrong. I loved Taipei and will defiantly be returning to Taipei and Taiwan at some point. We landed in Taiwan at around 2am and instead of paying for a hotel for the remainder of the night, we slept in the airport. It was cold and two chairs does not make a bed!! By the time we left the airport at around 8am I was tired, sore ... read more

After looking at a lot of different routes and working out the best financially Val and I decided to do Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, The Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. Our stay in the Philippines was on Palawan Island and near the city of Puerto Princesa. We take a Tuk-Tuk to our hotel and had a rest, we had had an over night flight and neither of us slept well. A friend of mine was staying in the city but was leaving later that day, I decided to go to see him while Val was sleeping. We spent some time together walking through the city before he caught his bus. I could see that ... read more

After looking at a lot of different routes and working out the best financially Val and I decided to do Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, The Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. Unfortunately the Irish had friends from home coming for part of the holiday so couldn't join us. The first thing we did when we arrived was book two taxis. The first to take us to our hotel for the night the second to take us to Ha Long Bay the next day. Doing it at the airport ticket office was a lot cheaper.
