Greetings all. Sorry I haven’t updated for a while but electricity is a precious resource here and when you only have 1 hour of charge in your laptop and several hours of data to enter, blogs end up taking a backseat. The feet are starting to get slightly better, thank goodness! Thank you for all your 'get well soon' wishes :-) I spent several days sitting around at camp, reading trashy novels and feeling sorry for myself before the swelling subsided. I now have feet that don’t look like balloons - huzzah! For the past few days I’ve been going out on short warm-up hikes. On Friday I went scouting for tamarins for a couple of hours, the next day I managed five hours of scouting and on Sunday I had my first experience of a ... read more

On Wednesday, during a quiet moment whilst chasing monkeys, Kat stated that she was disappointed we hadn’t yet experienced a tropical rain storm. Famous last words. With genius comic timing, the heavens decided to open the next day (our day off) just as I was hanging up my last sock to dry on the washing line! Since then it has been raining on and off with stupendous force. On Thursday I also noticed that my feet, ankles and calves had started to swell up. I had no idea why but it was rather disturbing to look at and the flexibility in my feet was greatly reduced. Rhea suggested that I was probably dehydrated so I should drink lots and sleep with my feet elevated. After we had all gone to bed on Thursday evening Kat got ... read more

Sorry I haven’t updated this blog for sometime but life has become very hectic! I’m currently sitting in the dinning room at CICRA, on my day off. I am trying to remember what has happened since I last posted but some of the days are starting to merge! I probably won’t get a chance to do this again for another week or so. Thanks to everyone who has left encouraging comments J For those of you who don’t know, I got my bags back ok. When Karina and Erin arrived it turned out that they also had only got 90 day visas so we all took a jolly adventure to get the visas and my bags. Our taxi driver, Carlos, was a hoot. He had a tendency to play the same song off his CD five ... read more

On Saturday night I sat on the end of my bed and cried whilst talking to Mum about all the things that could go wrong with this trip. I have a rather vivid imagination and am a natural pessimist so I was creating allsorts of bizarre possible situations. However, even I couldn’t imagine just how much bad luck I was in for over the next 24 hours or so. Getting to Heathrow airport was painless enough as was checking in for my flight. After a painful goodbye to Mum, Roger and Jon, I was comforted by a 30 minute wait to get through security and an exciting frisking by a particularly burly female security guard. The next hiccup didn’t come until boarding was supposed to start for my flight to Madrid at 7.20pm. Apparently someone had ... read more

Well folks, this is it! This time tomorrow I will be fastening my seatbelt and preparing to fly to Madrid before continuing on to Lima. As it's a night flight I'll probably get about 5 minutes sleep. By the time I arrive in Peru, and need to have my wits about me, I'm sure I'll be feeling as awake as a hibernating tortoise! I am hoping that I will be able to access the internet a few times while I'm still in Lima and then in Puerto Maldonado. After I leave for the research centre I'm not sure how frequently I'll be able to update this blog/reply to emails. I'll aim for once a week but I don't know what internet access will be like until I get there. I hope to hear from you all ... read more
