Las Vegas and Grand Canyon Tuesday/Wednesday Left home at 4.15am on Monday morning for our 5.30am flight from Cairns to Brisbane. In Brisbane we had a 3 hour wait for our flight to Los Angeles. The flight was 13.5 hours I think and went much better than expected. We got 2 meals, watched movies, played games had a few drinks and a couple of little naps. After landing in LAX and going through immigration, we had another 3 hour wait for our flight to Las Vegas. We flew with SouthWest and people bring their dogs on the plane! We got a cab to our hotel, the Flamingo which is about in the middle of the Las Vegas Boulevard. We were upgraded to a mini suite and it was awesome! We had a great view of the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach October 14th 2011

Emily's Birthday Bash It all started after an 8 1/2 hr drive south of Cairns to the lovely Airlie beach and Whitsundays Islands. Airlie Beach provides the ideal base for Whitsundays holiday fun and adventure, where accommodation styles are as varied as the accents that can heard in the Main Street. It’s a social and lively place with restaurants, clubs and bars to party well into the night, and a beautiful swimming lagoon set in parkland overlooking the islands. We parked up at the beaches backpackers and checked in, then straight upstairs to the room to polish off a birthday bottle of bubbles then down to Magnums bar (located next door to the backpackers) for a couple of happy hour JUGS of beer and live music for the night. Chris Nadine and I drove down together. ... read more

MISSING May 21st 2011

Saturday: Flew Jetstar from Cairbs to Denpasar via Darwin arriving around 5.30pm. In Indonesia you need to buy a visa on arrival which is US25 dollars that lets you stay for 30 days.We had a car waiting to take us to Hotel Sorga. The room was old but it was big and had TV and A/C and was only $34/room/night. We walked around and explored the shops and bars of Kuta then had cocktails and fancy dinner for Chris's birthday - splurging out at $25 each for a massive and delicious feast!Sunday: Woke up and walked up the beach to Seminyak. Then we got a taxi to Tanah Lot which is a temple built on a rock outcrop on the coast. Tanah Lot is in so many iconic photos of Bali. There are markets there and ... read more

Phnom Penh We got the Mekong Delta Bus from HCMC to Phnom Penh on Friday the 19th. The bus is pretty comfortable with tv, air con and roomy seats and they gave everyone a pastry and bottle of water. The scenery doesn't really change much and so it was a pretty dull but pleasent ride. After 3.5hrs we got to the Cambodian/Vietnamese border. Here everyone has to get out of the bus and walk through the security check, then back in the bus up a bit further then out again for immigration. We had purchased e-visas which was totally unnecessary and actually made us take longer than everyone else to get through. The bus stopped at this roadside restaurant for lunch. We had our first taste of Cambodian food and it was yummy. It was a ... read more

Hello Ho Chi Minh 2.10pm – 3.20pm Vietnam Airlines VN0329 (JMBXHL) Da Nang - Ho Chi Minh City $107 We had a very smooth flight from Da Nang to HCMC. The hotel had recommended 2 types of reliable taxis so after we managed to find one we made our way into District 1. We had booked a room at Saigon Mini Hotel 3 ($40 I think). HCMC is like Hanoi's big brother. There are still millions of scooters to contend with when crossing the only roads only here they drive much faster!! There was a thunderstorm in the evening so we spent a few hours in this cool bar called Go2 playing pool and drinking...we have spent a lot of this holiday drinking beers! Afterwards we went to this restaurant called 'Wrap and roll' where you ... read more

Hoi An - Day 1 Vietnam Airlines (VN311) Hanoi - Da Nang, Sat, November 13, 2:40pm – 3:55pm$85 We landed in Da Nang in the pouring rain where a car was waiting for us to take us to Phouc An Hotel. Our room wasn't as nice as the last one and smelt very musty with some old stains on the sheets. We decided that our time here is going to be spent relaxing as the rain is pretty limiting. It's not light rain, it's torrential! We had dinner and a few bevvies at our hotel restaurant (we were the only ones) then had an early night. Day 2 In the morning we braved the rain to go for a walk to the central markets and ancient town. Everything is very cute and old, reminding me a ... read more

Hanoi - Day 1 After leaving KL on the 3.30am bus to the LCCT terminal we landed in Hanoi, the capitol of Vietnam right up north. Hanoi is a heaving city full of horn honking scooters, tall skinny buildings and millions of people. It's so different from KL..it's more like Thailand or India. Dusty, grimy, full of life and excitement. An interesting thing about Hanoi is the streets are all named after the products sold on them. So you will walk from a street that sells hardware to a street that sells all silver, to a street that sells cloth to a street that sells meat. All the streets look so similar though, so you find yourself doing circles without even knowing it. We are staying at the Hanoi Guesthouse in the heart of the old ... read more

Day 1/2 Mel took us to the Cairns international at 10.30am to check in for our flight to Darwin. When we got there we were lining up to check into the next leg to Singapore when we were lucky enough to be checked into an earlier flight straight away. Heaven knows waiting at the Singapore airport beats Darwin any day! We got into Singapore at 7.10pm local time (about 10.5 hours since Cairns) then tried to get changed to any earlier flight to Kuala Lumpur but...computer says no! We hung out in Changi airpot for 4 hours taste testing duty free drinks, getting foot massages and browsing through clothes we could not afford. Once we finally got to KL LCCT we got the Skybus to KL Sentral station. Our driver beat the land speed bus record. ... read more

Day 12 - Himeji Castle Himeji Castle is about half way between Kyoto and Tokyo. So we got off the train, threw our backpacks in a locker and headed up the road. Also know as the White Heron, this magnificent castle is built on top of a big hill and the main tower is 6 stories high. The complex is made up of 83 buildings. It was blowing a gale when we were there but the sky was blue and the air was clear. The stairs going up into the castle were super steep and a bit slippery, but it was so worth it, with all the hidden doors, paintings and views from the top. Popular culture Himeji Castle frequently appears on Japanese television. Edo Castle (the present Tokyo) does not have a keep, so when ... read more

Day 10 Arriving early on the 8am shinkansen (2 hours) from Kyoto, we went straight to yet another K's House where we had a flash double room this time, with our own bathroom, TV, A/C and huge bed! After dropping our bags off we headed straight to the Green Arena for the Sumo Tournament. The performances included displays of comic sumo and traditional sumo songfests in addition to the normal sumo bouts. There were some BIG boys there...over 2m tall and over 200Kgs...we both got photos with a couple of them! It was really interesting to watch and the crowd was loving it. The east and west champions were both there. Last year they held this sumo tour but before that there hadn't been sumo in hiroshima in 10 years. Afterwards we went to the Peace ... read more
