My evening in Christchurch included dinner at “Mexico Restaurant” which served up hipster tacos with things like “pumpkin slaw” on them followed by heading to a pub for some refreshing adult beverages. Dave and I only found two of the Top Deck staff there at first but we were soon joined by Kris, Bec, Katie, Lewis, Ben and Becky. Kris brought us all shots of what tasted like apple juice but came in a teapot… maybe it was like a long island ice tea where all the alcohol magically cancels itself out? We booked two pool tables and Dave, Ben, and I played at the self-proclaimed amateurs’ table. We managed to get three games in before Dave and I called it a night. Much as I would have enjoyed staying out I wanted to kill off ... read more

Why isn’t air conditioning a thing here? Not one place I’ve been to has had it. I thought this was a tropical country? All you get (if you’re lucky) is a rinky dink little fan to try and circulate air around. Bah. The cold nights are the one thing I missed about home. Anyway, sorry for the idle chit chat. Not as much to report on today. Ahead of us was a long slog along the eastern coast, recently devastated by an earthquake, on our way to the former whaling town of Kaikoura. We made a brief stop at Pelorus Bridge where we partook in the universally enjoyed tradition of attempting to skip stones in the river, giving up when we couldn’t skip anything, then resorting to throwing the biggest rocks we could find. Okay I ... read more

“Ugh… what’s that light? Who’s that rummaging about at this time of night? Is that Mike? Wait, no, it can’t be morning already can it?” But it was morning. And time to move. I wasn’t even in all that bad of shape all things considered. No headache but I felt exhausted. I hastily packed my bag and went downstairs, electing for a hearty breakfast of water and only water. Today we would be leaving for the South Island by ferry. Hopefully nobody was prone to sea sickness, though this probably wasn’t going to be an issue as the ferry was enormous. A 10 deck behemoth with cafes and 2 movie theatres, it was the size of a small cruise-liner. Once aboard I felt the need to have some breakfast. Something horribly unhealthy with cheese and carbs ... read more

To the surprise of nobody, closing a bar with some Scotsmen gave me a bit of a hangover. Not a horrible one, but one of those where you just don’t feel quite right all day. I had managed to forget about the blister on my foot last night, but I was abruptly reminded when I jumped down from the top bunk in the morning. Our journey today would take us to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital and a renowned “party city”. It was no coincidence we were staying here on a Friday. On the way we had a quick stop in Bulls. Not sure why they’d call the place that. A more apt name would be “Sheep” but that probably would have been a cliché. Also en route was the town of Taihape, which hosts an annual ... read more

Today we would be taking a scenic route from Rotorua to Tongariro National Park, with stops at Huka Falls and Lake Taupo. Since it was overcast with a cool wind I decided Eddie Bauer was in fashion for today. Now, I wear this orange plaid shirt every day at home and nobody thinks anything of it. That’s because any given time 75% of the Canadian workforce is wearing the same thing. Well down here apparently this get-up is hilarious. “You’re ready for hiking eh?” “Where’s your cowboy hat?” “I knew you were from Alberta.” “You look like a farmer”. People were missing my funny t-shirts it seems. “It’s not rocket surgery” and “How to pick up chicks” were a big hit the first two days. The big activity options for today were canyon swinging and bungee ... read more

Sam graciously dropped me off at the local train station so I could ride back downtown. After I mistakenly grabbed a Canadian $5 bill out of my wallet, the ticket counter man asked if the Canadian dollar was actually called the Loonie. I tried to explain that it was only the one dollar coin but I’m not sure he believed me. Perhaps we should start a petition to have “dollar” changed to “loonie”, same as the movement in Australia to change their currency to the “dollar-y-doo”. My tour was set to start just outside of a hotel by the wharf. I had about two and a half hours to kill once the train arrived so I was rather disappointed to hear that the hotel didn’t offer a bag check service unless you had stayed there the ... read more

While he was at work, Sam offered to loan me his car since there didn’t appear to be much of anything anywhere within walking distance of the house. I’d driven right hand drive in Australia before so I was sure it would all come back to me. I went out to the car, opened the door and staring back at me was a clutch and gear lever. Huh. Well I’m only jet lagged as balls and out of practice, what could possibly go wrong. Turns out I’m a high functioning post-trans-pacific flight-er and everything went just fine. Didn’t even stall. As far as Sam knows. I got back from lunch and I didn’t think I was tired. I just figured I’d rest my eyes for a second. Well that second turned into a couple hours until ... read more

My adventure begins at the chiropractor, as all truly great adventures do. I walked in for a pre-vacation adjustment of my old-man spine. After barely setting foot in the door a man sitting in the waiting room commented “so you’re going on a trip eh?” “Yeah!?” I said enthusiastically but with that upward inflection one uses when they’re confused. “You’re probably pretty confused” the man surmised, brilliantly. “Yes…” I said, panicking that this person was someone important from the office whom I’d met previously but had completely forgotten. “You were at the McKenzie Towne barber shop this Sunday talking about your trip. I was there too, in the chair across from you.” Well well, small world I suppose… watch as this same guy would be beside me on my flight. Speaking of flights, the first leg ... read more

Day 11 Kalispell to Calgary Holy crap I’m tired. I think I’ve finally had enough. I want to go home. Ken does too. Don’t get me wrong its been an absolute blast but we’re both ready for home. Today’s drive was relatively tame. Two and a bit hours over the “Going-to-the-Sun Road” and we’d be at the border. Then 3 “fun-filled” hours on Highway 2 from Cardston all the way home. Ken and I had snuck out after dark at “the quiet hippy’s house” in Victor to take a look at my Pony for any issues causing the overheating. We’d determined she likely just needs a coolant flush. Failing that it could be the thermostat. Both easy fixes once we’re home. No signs of head gasket failure or other terrible sounding issues. All I asked for ... read more

Day 10 Victor to Kalispell As I mentioned previously, Ken suggested we leave at 6 this morning to make the most of our day. I attribute today’s success in Yellowstone National Park to this idea, but as I shall now demonstrate, implementation was a team effort. I volunteered to take the “futon” last night. I say “futon” because if it were a real futon, one could conceivably sleep on it. This was some sort of freak European couch that folded down into a flatter, less functional couch which the soul-less Scandinavian designers claimed you could sleep on. Ha. Sure. Maybe if you’re drunk or faced with the prospect of sleeping in cattle class on a 15 hour trans-Atlantic flight instead. Each section of this couch thing wasn’t overly comfortable to begin with and the sections were ... read more
