Essential China

My journey for the next three weeks

Asia » China » Beijing August 20th 2012

Well I arrived in China safe and sound and spent my first day wandering around the back streets of Beijing and then visiting the Lama temple. There were lots of large buddahs and incense! In the evening I met the group and we met our guide Ricky. On the next day we headed to the Great Wall and myself and a few others decided that taking the cable car up would be the lazy option so we walked up! 600 or so extremely steep steps later my calves were burning, I had drunk all of my water and we hadn't even seen any of the Great Wall yet! The wall was spectacular though if not a bit crowded in parts with what looked like a large crowd of army cadets carrying large flags of China! We ... read more

Africa » South Africa » North West August 24th 2011

Today was only a short drive over the border into South Africa. I liked South Africa straight away as we didn't have to fill out any immigration forms and it was sunny! :) We got to our camp and then a few of us went kayaking down Orange River. Once Sarah and I were in the rhythm it was really great fun. The only downside were the annoying flies that kept biting us! That evening the camp cooked dinner for us - roast lamb on a spit! The next morning was the long drive to our final destination: Cape Town! The scenery was spectacular on the way and we arrived around 5pm. Then we checked into our lovely hotel. We had been upgraded! Woohoo! There was TV, showers and baths! There was even a minibar! Then ... read more

Africa August 14th 2011

We travelled from Botswana to Namibia on the truck and arrived in Windhoek at around 2pm. We checked into our hotel and everyone was so excited because there were beds, hot showers and internet!! We sat by the pool until the sun went down and then got ready to go out. We went to a place called Joe's bar and I had a 16oz steak!! Also tried some crocodile! It was nice like chicken! Then much drinking was done including local lager and puncho which is a coffee tequila! The next morning is was an early start again as we headed to the waterberg plateau. It was a plateau in the desert and we all climbed to the top to watch the sunset. The next day we were off to Etosha National park. As we were ... read more

Africa » Botswana » North-West » Chobe National Park August 8th 2011

We travelled on our overland truck from Zambia to Botswana. The border took ages - again! We went to a place called Kasane in the Chobe National Park. After we had set up our tents and had lunch we went on a river cruise on the Chobe river. It was awesome! We saw elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalos, waterbucks and lots of birds. And we saw a fabulous sunset. The next morning we had to be up mega early - 5am - to leave for a game drive at 5.45am. We were hoping to see lions but sadly not! :( We did see giraffes, hippos, warthogs and thousands of impalas! And it was freezing!!! After that we hit the road again and were off to our next campsite in the National park called Planet Bao Bab. It ... read more

Africa » Zambia » Livingstone August 6th 2011

I arrived in Livinstone after an epic wait in customs to get my visa, but I made it through customs and to the campsite where I was starting my journey. It was right on the Zambezee river and had a fab view. I had a beer in the bar and met some fellow travellers before being shown to our tent and meeting the rest of our group. The next day I explored Victoria Falls, a short taxi ride away, with Peter and Sarah, fellow Brits. The falls were spectacular and we spent most of the morning there. Then we went to the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe where there is a bridge that you can bungee jump from. I didn't do it but Peter did! Sarah and I watched and enjoyed the view! That evening we ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa August 11th 2010

We arrived to Nazca quite late and our hotel was literally in the middle of nowhere about ten minutes drive down a very bumpy road. We checked into our rooms and me and Vicky found a nice surprise in the shower! A grasshopper - thankfully not a cockroach! But Bill came to the rescue and got rid of it for us! :) Afterwards we had dinner of chicken and chips in the hotel and then I played a few rounds of table tennis with Justin before everyone went to bed. These youngsters have no stamina! The next morning we didn´t have to leave until 11am but I got up and had breakfast and checked my emails. Then we caught the bus to the Nazca lines. We got to the tiny airport and saw the little planes ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Pisco August 7th 2010

I flew down from Quito to Lima late Wednesday evening and after a little hiccup of going to the wrong hotel I checked in and met my new room mate, Vicky. The next morning we got up and had breakfast with a couple of other guys from the group and changed money into sols which is the Peruvian currency. Then we caught a taxi to the old town. The ride took about thirty minutes from the hotel and the driving and traffic was crazy! When we got there me and Vicky walked around the main square then went to the monastry. We saw lots of art and artefacts and the catacombs which was really cool. They reckon up to 75,000 bodies were buried under the church and you can see all the bones and the tombs. ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos August 4th 2010

Well I am finally back from my trip to the Galapagos. Eight days on board the boat Galapagos Adventures 3. The flight from Quito was about two and half hours with a short stop for half an hour in Guayaquil. The airport was more of a shed but it was efficient and we had to get a bus, a little ferry and then another bus to get to where our boat was moored in Puerto Ayora on the island of Santa Cruz. This is the main town and where most people in the Galapagos live. We made it to the boat for lunch and found our cabin number 3 which I am sharing with a girl called Linda from France. It consisted of bunk beds and a very small bathroom. The sea was also really rough ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito July 27th 2010

I arrived in Quito late last night and got to my Hotel la Cartuja. I had a great night´s sleep even if I did wake up at 4am! I had breakfast and then booked myself on a tour of the city and a visit to the Equator! I met my room mate Linda and we took a stroll around the area near our hotel and went for coffee. The coffee was amazing and it was cool to sit and soak up the atmosphere and watch the boot polishers. Then I picked up the bus at 12pm and we headed into the old town. We went to several churches and walked around the oldl centre. Then we headed up to the highest point in Quito 3000m above sea level. The view was amazing and there was a ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague » Old Town August 20th 2009

Thursday We left early this morning to catch the bus to Prague. We had to drag our bags around the cobbled streets up a steep hill to a bus station and then caught a very nice bus - posh leather seats and TVs - to Prague. When we got to Prague we were shown to our apartments. I was sharing with four other girls: Andrea, Gill, Grace and Estelle. It was fab as we had our own kitchen and fridge and washing machine! We dumped our bags then met with George who took us on a walk around to get to know the city. Initially it was very confusing. I had no idea where we were going and it seemed like we were walking miles to get everywhere. After a few days though you realise Prague ... read more
