We had a long drive back in the direction we had come from to get to Yulara which is the Ayres Rock resort. We checked into the campsite and drove to the Olgas, an impressive cluster of domed rocks which form valleys and gorges, they are also known as Kata Tjuta. They are about 30km from Uluru with mount Olga being the tallest standing 200 meters above Uluru. We decided to do the Walpa Gorge walk which took us through the centre of the gorge. The walls of the gorge tower so high above you that its impossible not to get a sense of just how small we are on this huge planet. We then had a rush on to get to the Uluru sunset viewing area on time. Allot is written about how all the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » King's Canyon November 18th 2010

The alarm didn’t go off so we had a rather rushed morning trying to get off site for 10am. Hot and flustered we then had a 4 hour drive in the oven like temperature to Kings Canyon. After much convincing Andy finally agreed to do the 6km walk round the rim of the canyon. The only problem was that we had arrived during the hottest part of the day. As we were getting ready to set off we saw Frank and Manon who were just returning from the same walk. They told us that the first part of the walk was tough but that it was well worth the effort. I knew that the first part included a steep climb up 100m cliff face, but I had decided not to mention this to Andy in fear ... read more

After breakfast we treated Hilda to an oil and coolant change and some new spark plugs. I think she appreciated it as she started and ran like a brand new van. We set off about 1pm and made our first outback fuel stop at Spuds Roadhouse in Pimba. We had decided not to risk carrying extra fuel in the heat, instead planning to stop at every place available to fill up. There are long stretches of the Stuart Highway with nothing to look at apart from the outback, and today was going to be one of those stretches. The outback was however looking much greener than we had expected due to an unusual amount of rain in the weeks before we came. We stopped in Glendambo, with its population of 20 for the night. It was ... read more

We couldn’t have been more disappointed when we woke up to find that last nights 30 degree heat had been replaced with grey sky and a persistent drizzle. Our day didn’t get any better when the new gas bottle we bought wouldn’t turn off properly. We had to pack up and drive around town to find someone who could help us disconnect the bottle. Luckily it wasn’t leaking as it was turned off at the stove but we did have a rather tense hour of driving about while I looked after the gas bottle in the back. We found someone to help us fix the problem but our relaxing day had disappeared by then. We went back to the campsite and started preparing Hilda for the outback. Andy did all the washing while I rebuilt the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Whyalla November 11th 2010

The morning flies made it impossible to do our planned maintenance. Not only were they trying to get up our nose and in our ears but they were very interested in the engine bay! We gave up and drove to Whyalla to find the camping shop. As we approached Whyalla we were greeted by the sight of huge steelworks pumping smog into the air. A seaside town with smoggy steelworks reminded me of places in the North East of England. We arrived outside the camping shop to find that it had long since failed and closed down. In fact it had been closed so long that a cycle shop had replaced it and also since failed. Disappointed we decided that since we were here anyway we may as well have a look around. We found that ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Port Pirie November 10th 2010

There are no photos to accompany this entry as I did not want to make anyone ill. I did get a photo of the offending restaurant but chose not to include it for fear of being sued! It was so bad that it deserves an entry all of its own.... Arriving in Port Pirie Andy spotted a seafood restaurant he wanted to go to for lunch. We don’t eat out much and Andy was very eager to try the scallops and prawns. We waited excitedly but what we got when our order arrived looked like a kids meal in a service station. The only thing that could have made it more like a kids menu special would have been the choice of peas or baked beans! Everything was previously frozen and battered or for the slightly ... read more

We did have slightly sore heads in the morning but it was our own fault for not eating dinner. We didn’t want the previous night dinner to go to waste so we ate smoked salmon and avocado sandwiches for breakfast (don’t think we are extravagant it was all reduced price) a slightly strange breakfast but tasty non the less. After driving back to waikerie for cold drinks we got on our way. Our first stop of the day was in Burra. It was a centre for copper mining in the mid 1800s with many people from all over Britain moving there. The largest community was the Cornish. Evidence of this can still be seen in the local café where the speciality is their Cornish Pasty! We would have loved to have tried one but as with ... read more

Surprisingly after the stresses of the evening we had a good nights sleep, but Hilda still wouldn’t start in the morning. We tried hitting the starter motor with a hammer and even had a couple of attempts to push start her (she heavy) but still no luck. It then started to rain so we couldn’t get everything outside to get to the engine - this was not fair! We somehow piled everything at one end of the van so we could get to the engine best we could. After some fiddling Andy tried again and much to our relief she started! It turned out to be a loose connection on the starter motor, an easy fix, and if it happens again we will know what it is. We were finally on our way to Pinaroo for ... read more

After breakfast we made our way back to Mt Gambier. We got the sat nav to take us to the shopping complex. When we arrived we found ourselves outside a laundrette and a pie shop - not exactly what I’d call a shopping complex. After looking round the other shops we had no luck finding a bike so set off again. We drove through the Coonawarra wine region which is miles of vines as far as the eye can see. Some of them produce many of the wines we would recognise at home., but since we were already carrying 5 litres of wine (well you have to be prepared!) we didn’t stop. We were heading for a free camp area called Poocher Swamp. It looked like a good bet in the book but when we arrived ... read more

We finally awoke to some sunshine. After breakfast we took a walk on the beach before setting off again. We drove through Port Fairy with its many listed buildings and more Irish pubs before stopping in Portland for supplies and a look around its many tat shops. It seems really strange to be looking at Christmas decs while its so sunny. We were on our way to Mt Gambia when we finally saw our first Kangaroo… it was a shame it was laying by the side of the road minus its head, still there was plenty of time to see a live one. We were approaching the SA border when we started to see signs telling us to put any plants and fruit in the bin provided. Having just spent $5 on a bag of apples ... read more
