Today was the day we had been dreaming about. Although we love Hilda and we were getting used to the humidity, the thought of spending 4 nights in an air conditioned apartment with a real bed was so exciting! What was even more exciting was that Gemma and Kieran were arriving tonight and after Christmas we would be starting out adventure down the East coast together. We had just one more thing to do before we could check in and we were hoping that it would be different from doing it at home. The people here are so chilled out that we were sure it would be. - we were soooo wrong! I now know that it doesn’t matter what side of the world you are on Christmas shopping is a nightmare and it turns even ... read more

While packing up the next morning Andy discovered a redback spider making a web on our roof. This had been our first sighting of Australias poisonous creatures - well it was a sighting for Andy. I am very grateful that he dealt with it first and told me about it later! We drove the short distance to Mossman Gorge. We walked through the forest and across the Rex Creek Bridge before finding a crystal clear river to have a paddle in. There were some very inquisitive fish in the river. They swam right up to us and looked at us expectantly waiting for some food. “If only I had my fishing rod” Andy sighed “ I bet they wouldn’t take much catching” I’m sure I could detect a look of relief from the fish…. I guess ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cape Tribulation December 14th 2010

Our main aim for the day was to get to Cape Tribulation. We made a whistle stop tour of some towns on the way and we were soon boarding the cable ferry. There were signs warning us of recent Croc sightings so were pleased that we were not aloud to get out of the van. Reaching the other side we were suddenly surrounded by rainforest. We were on a narrow and winding road driving up and down hills with a sheer drop into the dense forest on one side. If someone were to drop off the edge then no one would ever know as the forest would swallow them forever. We took it very easy. We stopped at a look out point and the views were just stunning. Wandering through the rainforest it had a strange ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Atherton Tablelands December 12th 2010

We had planned to visit a Chinese temple in Atherton this morning but on our way we decided to take a road signposted the scenic tourist road. It was also signposted unsuitable for caravans. We were unsure if this meant us as well but Andy decided to go for the ‘try it and see’ method and we soon found ourselves on a single track road with nowhere to turn round. This was starting to remind me of the time we got stuck on a single track road in Molly the caravan back in the UK because Andy decided to ignore the road signs and the navigator (me). Thankfully this time it all worked out fine. The views were of rolling hills with sheep grazing in the distance. Had we driven into the Cotswolds we wondered?? We ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Innot Hot Springs December 9th 2010

We had a leisurely morning and didn’t set off till lunch time. One of the bonuses of free camping is not having to set your alarm to get off site so once in a while we like to lounge about for a morning. We needed to stock up on a few things so we drove to Innisfail which was the nearest large town. Driving through we noticed a radiator specialist. Although Hilda had been much better we were planning a trip up some pretty steep mountains so it wouldn’t hurt to get her checked out. After a quick chat with the owner we left Hilda with him and wandered into town to kill some time. It was a blistering hot day and we were desperately in need of a shower and some food. The heat soon ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Townsville December 7th 2010

We were going to leave Townsville lots of times, but we were enjoying the rest so much that each morning we would wander over to reception and book another night. Travelling in Hilda is lots of fun but we had covered al ot of miles to make sure that we would get to Cairns in time for Christmas. Doing hundreds of kilometres every day can take it out of you. On Tuesday we finally left. We drove around Townsville looking for a tent and some chairs for Gemma and Kieran. Walking to the shops proved tricky for Andy. He has never been the greatest fan of flip flops, but out here there is no other option if you want to keep your feet cool and not wear Jesus creepers. Learning to walk in them has not ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mount Isa November 26th 2010

We had some pretty heavy rain during the night and when we woke up it was still drizzling. We were grateful for the brief break from the humidity that the grey clouds brought as it enabled us to have a sleep in for once. Once we were packed up we drove to the Mary Kathleen Ruins. The word ruins normally conjures up a picture of castles or churches crumbling a away, but these ruins were from the more recent time of the 1980’s. In 1954 a large deposit of uranium was discovered here and a mine was built at the site. Over the years it lay idle and reopened many times until finally being closed down in 1982. In 1983 the whole town was emptied. There are no longer any buildings but the foundation of houses ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Devils Marbles November 24th 2010

When we woke up at 8 it was already over 30°. Today we would leave the Stuart Highway behind. We would drive to Tenant Creek then just a few miles past that was our turning and we would be heading towards Queensland. On route we made a stop at The Devils Marbles. These are huge granite boulders which are balanced on top of each other. They are the remnants from a solid mass of granite which has broken down over the years. Some of them are almost perfectly round. If we had something like this back home it would be a constant hive of tourists, but today we were the only people there. Another 100km down the road and we reached Tenant Creek. A local tale says that the town was founded on beer and that ... read more

We were pleased to be leaving the hustle and bustle of town to get back on the open road again. It felt like every time we hit a big town there was always something that we needed to do to fix something however minor. When we are on the road there are no shops and supermarkets so you just forget about it. It was another hot morning so we were both looking forward to cooling down in some rock pools - the croc free ones. Our first stop was at Emily Gap. It is one of the most important Aboriginal sites in the Alice Springs area. Its associated with the Eastern Arrernte Caterpillar Dreaming Trail. It promised a deep waterhole and the possibility that we would have to swim to reach the next stop of the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Alice Springs November 21st 2010

After returning back to the resort for a couple of hours sleep we were soon back on the road and on our way to Alice Springs. The plan was to find somewhere half way to camp for the night and finish the other half of the journey in the morning. We ended up making such good time that we arrived in Alice Springs at 5pm. Andy had read about an Indian Restaurant in the guidebook and even though his last choice of eatery was, well shall we say awful, we decided to risk it and eat dinner there before finding a campsite. When we found the restaurant it didn’t open till 6pm so with some time to kill we found a supermarket to stock up on water. When we walked out of the supermarket with our ... read more
