We really didn’t know what to expect. We had heard so much about the floods and we knew that it had been big news all over the world, but without a television it made it difficult to picture. There was a strange feeling as we headed into the unknown. Soon enough we no longer needed a television as we were able to see it with our own eyes. As we drove closer to Rockhampton the water level in each creek and river got higher and higher. Rivers were covering the rail bridges which were built high in the air to cross them and trains were sat stranded on higher ground. Just outside the city we saw what was once a field. It now looked more like a lake with someone’s roof sticking out of it. All ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Yeppoon January 9th 2011

With nothing better to do we decided on a pub crawl round Yeppoon. On our walk into town we could hardly believe our eyes when we saw thousands of bats hanging in the trees. We have seen bats flying in the sky at a lot of places, but to see them like this was amazing - as was the stench coming from them! When we wandered around town we couldn’t see many bars - this can cause a problem when you are planning a pub crawl. Gem decided to ask a passing local. He told us that there was normally a good Sunday crowd at the Railway bar. While Andy and Kieran looked for a bank Gemma and I went ahead to check it out. When we arrived we were sure we must be in the ... read more

Today we covered as many miles as we could. We struggled finding somewhere to stay. When we arrived at the first place it was pouring with rain. The place looked a little run down and in need of a lick of paint. Andy and Kieran ran in to enquire, but soon ran back ouy again. “That place was weird” Kieran said. We asked him what he meant. Andy then piped up “the office reminded me of a scene from a horror film and the manager looked like someone from The League if Gentlemen. I’m pretty sure that allot of people book in, but they never get to book out, I bet if you looked there are previous tenants for sale in the freezer” We decided that it was probably for the best that we carried on. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach January 4th 2011

Most of today was taken up with driving. Without the mishaps of yesterday we made it Airley beach. This is apparently Queensland’s answer to Byron Bay. There were some guys from the campsite in Cairns that we have been bumping into since we left. One of them had recommended a campsite in Airley Beach. We found it and checked in while Gem went for a walk around the site. When she returned she had some bad news. There were hundreds of screaming kids running about. We went to get some shopping and returned to the campsite with a plan. Kieran ran in and gave them a sob story about having to cut our trip short due to some family news. Luckily they believed him and gave him a refund. We were all very pleased when we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mission Beach January 3rd 2011

We were packed up in record timing in the morning. We were soon on our way to Mission Beach. We were not really sure what to expect but we knew that it is a popular place that many people had talked about. When we arrived we were quite disappointed. The recent weather had churned up the sea and there was a lot of debris on the sand - including dead fish. It surprised us that on such a popular beach there was no hurry to clean it. We were told that South Mission Beach would be nicer, so we decided to give it a go. On the way there the road cut through the rain forest. There were signs telling us to be careful of the Cassowaries - a large endangered flightless bird . We had ... read more

Since being in Queensland we had seen a lot of leaflets recommending a place called Paronella Park. The leaflets all marked it as Number 1 thing to do in Queensland. None of the leaflets really give you much of an idea what its all about so it was all a bit of a mystery. The pictures looked beautiful so that was enough of a reason to give it a go. Entry to the park also includes use of the caravan park so for once we had our day planned and also somewhere to spend the night. There was a daytime tour and an evening tour to go on so after setting up we rushed back to the office for the daytime tour. We were in such a rush that we had forgotten to put on out ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Orbost January 1st 2011

It was the hottest day we had ever experienced. Hotter than the outback. So hot that when you put your arm outside there was no cooling effect from the breeze. This combined with the fact that we were slogging up and down hills meant that Hilda was struggling again. We pulled over for an hour to let her cool, but as soon as we had to go uphill her temperature was on the rise again. With nowhere to pull over until we reached the top of the hill we had no choice but to carry on. When we finally reached the top we pulled into the rest area and poor Hilda was leaking once again. It was the final pipe that we had not yet replaced. Luckily we had bought it as a precautionary measure. We ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Port Douglas January 1st 2011

Waking up with slightly sore heads, we decided that driving would not be a good idea. Our hippy friends had decided the same, but were reminded of checking out time by the rather rude owner who knocked on their door and pointed at her watch saying “check out time is 10am sharp”. They were visiting friends who live on the site and were planning on stopping for breakfast so drove out the gates, parked their van on the road and wandered back in. We couldn’t get packed up in time so booked an extra half day on the site and walked into town to get a much needed breakfast. The café was busy but we managed to get a table outside. Breakfast was good - although not up to Melbourne standards. We did however have a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Port Douglas December 31st 2010

It was time to time for us all to get on the road. Boys in the front and girls in the back. We had glorious weather for our first day. We wanted to get out in the sun as much as possible so made our first stop at Palm Cove. We wandered down the pretty seafront with its cafes and shops before taking a dip in the sea - in the safety of the stinger nets of course. The temperature of the sea was a shock to us all. My memories of the sea are mostly from paddling and jumping the waves at Redcar or Hunstanton. The water here was as hot as some peoples baths. Checking out the sign on the beach we found that the water was 29°, not refreshing in any way! Walking ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Great Barrier Reef December 27th 2010

Today we were all sad to be leaving the apartment, but also excited to be starting our adventure together. We all wanted to see the Great Barrier Reef so decided to move to the campsite that we had stayed at before and check out the day trips. Arriving on site Gem looked a little apprehensive. She is not the best when it comes to bugs - but to be fair Kieran is not that much better,! The thought of sleeping in a tent was not filling them with joy. But give them credit, only once on a windy hill in Hastings have they been anywhere near a tent. This time they managed to put their tent up with only minor input from us. After setting up we cracked open a drink, Gemma’s idea being that she ... read more
