It was time to move again. We were booked onto a site in Ashbourne Derbyshire in a few days so needed to find somewhere in between Ripon and Ashbourne. Now I’m not sure if many of you have studied the area on the map between Ripon and Derbyshire, but lets just say that spoilt for choice are not the words I would use to describe it. Leeds, Bradford, Doncaster and Rotherham were just a few of the many delightful choices we had. We settled on a site just a few miles from Barnsley. Now I know what you’re probably thinking, but the site was tucked away in the middle of the countryside on a farm. If you didn’t have to leave the site then you would never guess where you were. Once we were set up ... read more

We needn’t have set the alarm this morning. I was awake long before it went off, too excited to sleep any longer. Today was the day that we were off to Lightwater Valley. It’s a theme park that I have very fond memories of being taken to as a child. As we walked through the grounds I noticed many of the rides had not changed. Some of the rides were a lot smaller than I remember though. It’s funny how you remember things when you’re little. I seem to remember racing down mountain sides at 50 miles an hour on sit on skateboards. As I watched on now it looked more like 2 miles an hour down a small hill. I’m sure the children here today would remember it as a mountain too. The first ride ... read more

The weather was drizzling once again so we went out for a drive. We were not quite sure where we were driving to but headed in the direction of the Dales. The winding country roads cut through the dales with beautiful countryside either side. The roads are so steep in places, but as you reach the highest points there is nothing but stunning countryside as far as the eye can see. In some areas there is nothing for miles, giving you the feeling that you are the only people around. This feeling occasionally gave way as we drove through quaint little villages that looked just like Emmerdale. We made our first stop Pateley Bridge. At first we thought it looked like a relatively small place but turned out to be somewhat of a tourist destination. The ... read more

We had not had internet for a while so this blog was getting very behind. We also had a mountain of washing to do and since the site had now quietened down we decided to grab the washing machines while they were free. I sat down to a day of typing up our notes and Andy very generously offered to do the washing. I watched him disappear off up the hill laden down with washing and thought ahhh bless. Quite some time had passed since I’d seen him and I wondered where he had got to. But to honest I was enjoying a bit of peace and quiet so no need to investigate! Some more time passed and as I was gazing out of the window looking for some inspiration, I saw him trundling back down ... read more

After the all the excitement of Blackpool we had a day of relaxation. But when we woke on Sunday we were looking forward to a trip to the seaside. Having already attempted Bridlington earlier on in our trip we decided on Scarborough. We parked on the south side and walked along the promenade which curves its way around the cliff face. There is nothing but cliff on one side and the sea on the other. As we continued out walk further and further Andy became convinced that there was no real seaside with tat shops and amusements. Having been to Scarborough before I kept my mouth shut and kept walking. As we walked round the final bend I looked at Andy and watched his face light up as he saw the fairground, chip shops, Ice-cream stands ... read more

We set the alarm and got up early, today was the day we were off to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. When we arrived we collected our tickets and ran through the gates like excited children. We headed straight for The Big One and to our surprise the queue was only about 20 minutes long. We even got the seats right at the front. For those of you who don’t know, the Big One when first opened was the highest, fastest and steepest rollercoaster in the world. It doesn’t hold any of these records anymore but its still a fantastic rollercoaster. Next and after some convincing I managed to get Andy to go on the Ice Blast. This shoots you 230 feet in the air at 80 miles an hour then drops you back down again. It was ... read more

Crossing the border back to England was nowhere near as grand as entering Scotland. They had kilts and bagpipes and what did we have..?… nothing. No pot of tea, no cucumber sandwiches, not even a sign! Somewhere along the A1 I said to Andy “I think we’re in England now” and we probably were. After a very long trip we finally arrived at our new site just a few miles from Ripon. It was in the middle of nowhere and so very peaceful. Best of all that evening we were able to enjoy a cold cider in the sunshine with no midges to bother us. The following morning we woke to rain again. This was nothing compared to the rain we had experienced in Scotland and by lunchtime the sun was out so we headed to ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Fife » Saint Andrews August 2nd 2010

This was our final day in Scotland. We had to travel back to Dundee to pick up Andy’s glasses but after that we made our way to St Andrews for lunch. It is a strange place in that even though it is in Scotland you could spend hours trying to find someone who spoke with a Scottish accent. Most people are jolly nice chaps in rugby shirts with their polo playing chums. Either that or groups of middle aged men kitted out in matching slacks and anoraks - as American golf trips tend to be. It is a place of strange street names, cobblestone roads, coffee shops and greenfly. Sadly the town seemed overrun with them making it quite unpleasant to be outside. We went to a fantastic Thai and Japanese restaurant for lunch and enjoyed ... read more

The weather meant we would soon be moving out of Scotland and back into England. The sun followed by rain followed by sun meant the midges were out in force making it impossible to have even the windows open. This is not pleasant in a metal box. Today we travelled to a local farm to try and solve their Maize Maze. It was quite a humid day and being surrounded by six foot maize did nothing to help this. The idea was that on our way around we should come across boards with pictures of animals on. With each animal was a stamp and to complete the maze correctly we had to collect all 8 stamps. This was easier said than done. As we got more and more lost and found no animals tensions rose. It ... read more

Loch Earn is a place that Andy can remember coming to as a child to fish from a jetty. When we reached the jetty we noticed that it had deteriorated somewhat but I suppose the same could be said of Andy in the thirty years since he had last visited. Driving around the loch it was obvious that there were plenty of fish. Every available spot was taken. Hundreds of tents and caravans were pitched loch side for a spot of wild camping. This is quite common in Scotland. On many of our trips out we have noticed tents pitched in woodlands with people sat around campfires. Maybe we will give this a try when we return. Later in the day we visited Stirling. On our arrival we were greeted by boarded up houses and abandoned ... read more
