Blogger Dougo Right. So, here I am sitting in the living room of our apartment in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The power has gone off as it has at about 7pm every day since our arrival. Every few minutes the lights will surge as the backup generator kicks in and sends power to our apartment. The Uninterrupted Power Supply or UPS as we have quickly learned, is pretty good. We can still turn on the fans above me and our room, as well as a lights in all rooms but the kitchen. No TV and no refrigerator though. The latter could pose a problem. Anyway, as you can see from the photos Bec took a couple of days after our arrival, our apartment is massive. So massive that yesterday I went and got a quote for pool ... read more

Blogger Dougo Today we got our first good look at our new school, the International School of Dhaka. We were picked up from our apartment at around 8:30am and picked up other new staff on the route to school. The rivers are still swollen and so the driver had to go an alternate route to bypass the flooded roads. The school is an oasis. It really is. The pictures below show just how great the insides are. We will add pictures of the outside later. Today was a lot of house keeping: a tour of the school, mobile phone sim cards, salary advances, a meet and greet with the new director. After school we had a dinner with all the new staff at a lovely Indian restaurant. Every one is really cool, no great egos ... read more

Blogger Bec reporting in from Matamanoa Island Resort A marine sanctuary one metre off shore, cocktails, an infinity pool, a massive bure, an un-get-outtable hammock, 4 chick lit novels, the pleasure of being alone and a whole lotta rain meant that our wonderful honeymoon was just not long enough! Our one island, one resort was about a 90 minute catamaran ride off the mainland of Fiji, or 30 nautical miles. We chose the island as there was no kids and was limited to 60 guests. The surroundings and the room was even better than we imagined! The resort offered heaps of activities such as pottery market trips, sailing, island hopping, snorkelling and the like but we were far too lazy for that! We managed a small hike up an even smaller hill (not a mountain as ... read more

Blogger Wifelet For some reason, the wedding blog got deleted when the website crashed. It now appears that the pictures that accompanied that specific blog are attached to another, completely different blog - grrr. I've tried deleting them but to no avail - when I log in to the Control Panel, the wedding pics are in none of our blogs, but when you, our brave and intrepid readers log in, you see the wedding pics on one of the ISD blogs! Grrr, grrr, double grrr. So, here I will try again to add the wedding pics in the correct place! Here also, is run down of the day for those of you who weren't there! Blogger Bec Quick Noah, get building! This month has seen it all in our home state of Victoria. First, we have had the state's worst rail disaster when a truck sped through a level crossing and smashed into a V/Line train, killing 11 people. The, last week we had a horrendous inner city shooting resulting in a death of a man whose only crime was to care about a woman who was being harrased. Now, the entire Gippsland area (where Doug's parents live, and where we have been staying for 7 weeks) is suffering under a deluge of rain, wind and now floods. Roads have been closed, schools are out of action, homes and livestock are ruined and there has been mass evacuations in some areas. Luckily we have not been personally affected apart from ... read more

Local happenings Australasia » Australia » Victoria » Gippsland By Doug and BecJune 13th 2007Doug Taylor and Bec Fidler A few pics of what we have been up to recently! We're really on the countdown now! We just wake everyday and pray for the phone call that will see us employed at one of the local schools. If there's no call, we amuse ourselves at home or down the street or just generally find ways to avoid spending money (without much success, I must point out!) Our inboxes are being flooded with negative RSVP's with is so sad but it does mean that for those... read more

Blogger Bec Ah, the glorious smell of routine! We have settled into a lovely little routine of housewife and breadwinner, with me cooking (and occasionally cleaning though not really) for the family as Doug potters off to work to earn some cash to put towards the substantial debt we have racked up having the world's dream holiday. Living back in a country town has been really refreshing for me. After living anonymously for so long in big cities, and foreign cities at that, it has been a welcome change to have people wave, nod, lift their finger from the steering wheel as you pass. I like going to the coffee shop and people know you. I like that Sue can go to Coles and the checkout chick asks about Doug. No doubt, that would grate after ... read more

Going HomeDoug Taylor and Bec Fidler Blogger Bec Finally, we are home and rested! It was hard slog getting home but after a week in Melbourne, sorting out various bits and bobs, we have settled into life in Sale, with Doug's parents. We spent Mother's Day on a gorgeous lake in East Gippsland, having a picnic and soaking up the (not hot) sunshine. Truly divine - I bloody love Australia!!! Today starts the odyssey of job hunting. Let me give you some background... Last Monday, dishelleved yet full of hope, and bravely fending off the jet lag, I called the Victorian Institute of Teaching to see how my application was progressing. suprise of all suprises, there was a problem. "You'll need to get a police check from China". HOLD THE PHONE - WHAT THE?! All of ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Barbados April 28th 2007

Blogger Dougo Last October, I was totally bumbed about the prospect of watching the final of the World Cup on my birthday from some bar in Jamaica. Even worse, watching a team other than Australia in the Semi Finals coz we couldn´t get tickets to the Semi they were more than likely going to play in. Thank goodness we stumbled upon the cruise ship over to St Lucia. The problem, as we found out upon arrival in the Caribbean, was not getting tickets for the matches, it was getting to and from the islands that were hosting them. Never mind the fact that we applied during the initial ticket allocation for Semi 1 and Final tickets and didnt get them. We got hold of the tickets and found out a way to get to the ... read more
