Day 32 : Monday 7 October 2019 : Lake Bled Glad we bought those jackets, its very cool! Took a walk around the whole Lake and hiked up to Mala Osojnica (or maybe Ojstrica). Met a lovely Victorian couple and did the walk with them. We all got lost, but made it in the end. Great walk, bit slippery, awesome views. Next stop, rowing a Pletna boat (€20) to the island, well Graham did, Ella tried (we could’ve been a while) and then our hero rower was Kirsten. Kirsten wasn’t very good at it ? Got to the other end of the lake and was so hungry, but there wasn’t really anywhere to eat. So we upped the pace and kept on our route, all the way around, past the castle, back into town to have ... read more

Day 31 : Sunday 6 October 2019 : San Candido to Lake Bled We’re sad to leave this beautiful countryside but it’s time to make our way to Lake Bled, Slovenia. Had our own carriage in the train, felt like Harry Potter. This is the first time we’ve had to take a taxi (€18) from the train to our accommodation, but it was easier and so much quicker. Accommodation wasn't as great as some of the amazing places we have stayed, still clean and neat. Took a walk into town and around the Lake to the Castle Bled. Lovely castle (€11 pp). Stunning views. Nice place. Bought some pasta and had dinner in. Booking.com Apartments Maja €75 pn. Walked 9kms or 15000 steps and 47 floors. CC €23 Cash €368 (inc €350 cash to accomm)... read more

Day 29 : Friday 4 October 2019 : Hiking the Dolomites We had to outfit ourselves with jackets and stockings for under our jeans. Tough Dad just wanted better hiking boots. Views are amazing, and we settled for the ‘Family Hike’ and headed up the mountains. I would hate to see a difficult hike. The hike was nothing short of spectacular as we gazed upon the 3 peaks of the Dolomites. You just want to keep taking photos from every viewpoint so that you can capture the enormity of it, but you can't do it justice. We got warm very quickly because it was all uphill, but what goes up must go down. As always, when climbing through the woods you have to sing the Playhouse Disney song ‘I met a bear’. Alright, we haven’t sung ... read more

Day 28 : Thursday 3 October 2019 : Lake Garda to Innichen/San Candido The new plan is to head to San Candido/Innichen in the Dolomites. It’s very close to the Austrian border. We had left a few days clear to decide how we wanted to make our way to Lake Bled. Kirsten was very keen to get to the Dolomites but when we left home I just hadn’t been able to find a nice place to go without hiring a car and spending hours doubling back on ourselves. So I invested many hours of an evening doing more homework, and I found a post from someone recommending Innichen and it met our requirements. So off we go. The scenery got more and more lovely as we headed North. We noticed that people were getting on the ... read more

Day 27 : Wednesday 2 October 2019 : Sermione We took the bus, bought tickets in a little shop opposite the bus stop (€15 rtn) to Sermione to see the castle (€18). Before we even got inside, there was a gold Rolls Royce in the parking lot. Big black guy, looked dangerous, like mafia :o Very cute old castle town. Really lovely. Castle was in good condition. Tried to walk all the way around the coast, but couldn’t get through, but it’s a really pretty coast line. The water is so clear. Walked and chatted to a lovely couple from Australia that have family in Italy. Ella had the largest gelato I have ever seen. The rain was coming as we waited for the bus. Kirsten bought some shoes whilst we took shelter. I really wanted ... read more

Day 26 : Tuesday 1 October 2019 : Bike ride to Lazise, Bardino and Garda on Lake Garda We are trading sore feet for sore bums. We hired bikes from the caravan park. Its a coastal path that goes from town to town, and quite busy on this glorious sun shiny day. It's a huge lake, but a beautiful ride up the east side. Lazise is our first town with a wonderful old town centre with cobblestone paving, narrow alleys and picturesque squares and a harbour set right in the centre. It seems to be a walled town or castle originally. We parked on the outskirts and wondered in. Great shopping, best we've seen. Use girls couldn't resist and made some purchases, whilst Graham amused himself with more calamari. That's it, going back for more seafood, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Peschiera del Garda September 30th 2019

Day 25 : Monday 30 September 2019 : Lake Como to Lake Garda Off we head to Peschiera del Garda, Lake Garda (prebooked AUD$131). So sad to leave this beautiful place and this fabulous relaxing slice of heaven we called home. On arrival we sorted the train tickets from here to San Candido because I couldn’t book online. Turns out price just doubled ☹it now €150! But its ok, because I booked from San Candido to Lake Bled, a long trip and it was only €32. Just to mix it up, this time our accommodation is a caravan park, on the lake for something different. A nice deluxe 3 bedroom park home!. Butterfly Camping Village. Okay, was smaller than we expected as you can see in the photo Graham can reach both walls and the light ... read more

Day 24 : Sunday 29 September 2019 : Hike from Bellano Hiking time. We wanted to hike to Bellano, the guy from the bottom floor said you can walk it. We couldn’t find the start of the track, so decided to train it to Bellano (€5) and see the Orridio and visit the supermarket and if we’re lucky find the trail back. Trains just so easy. In fact, took the opportunity to book the train from San Candido to Lake Bled, because I hadn’t been able to do it online. Still can’t. There’s so many people coming in to see the air show again. We got to Bellano, but being a Sunday, nothing is open until the afternoon. Wow, we got to see the air show again. Just the last 20 minutes, the finale with the ... read more

Day 23 : Saturday 28 September 2019 : Air show and Bellagio steal the show Interesting, it seems there’s an air show on. Supposed to start at 10am, we weren’t sure if we’d be able to see it. We watched for a little while and saw a bit and decided to head down. Graham is super excited, I was more disappointed that the ferries weren’t running. But it turned out to be very good. There were people everywhere, the place was packed. Pretty amazing, especially the fighter jets flying in formation. Quite easy to see with the mountains in the background and flying above the lake. Its still a little misty though. The air show is likely to be the highlight of Graham’s trip. Something that we could never have anticipated. After that when the ferries ... read more

Friday 27 September 2019 : Santa Margherita to Varenna, Lake Como Today we head north to Varenna, Lake Como. Decide that its too far to lug our bags with all those hills if we’re getting on a train, so a taxi €25 for a 5-10min ride. Those wonderful fast trains ($118AUD prebooked), except that today, our train was late. So when we got to Milan for our connection, we needed to sort out another train. No biggy as it turns out, an hour to sit on the kerb and eat our packed lunch, toilets, drinks and off we go again. The last part of the journey has beautiful scenery, we’re getting very excited. The trains are so comfortable, we were concerned with the distances, but its not a problem. We were met at the train station ... read more
