Took a tour recommended by Ola - thank you Ola. The tour was excellent and our guide was wonderful. Konrad, apx. 75, was a child during Nazi occupation and a young man when the Russians occupied Poland so he has seen it all. He had some interesting stories to tell. First stop was Oliwa Cathedral where we got to hear beautiful organ music and look at the incredible wood carvings that surrounded the pipes. Then we drove by Lech Walesa’s house, which is pretty well hidden behind a fence and trees, but I was able to get a few pictures. Next we went sightseeing in Gdansk Old Town built in 997 A.D. with detailed talks about all the important buildings. This area was 80% destroyed at the start of WWII, but has been restored to its ... read more

Roxie went on a tour of “Old Town (cobblestone streets and lots of hills),” while Roger rested and Judy & I took a shuttle to “Old Town” and walked around on our own. As we got off the bus and walked to the street we needed to turn on I fell over a semi-circle rock. My left knee is bruised up pretty good, but other than that I’m fine. We were approached by a young lady offering samples of candied/flavored/smoked nuts and asked if we wanted to try one. It was still early in the morning so we both said, “no thank you.” The young lady looked at us and said, “Why not?” We were both so shocked at her question, we simply walked on. We continued on to “Sweater Wall” where some homemade, and some ... read more

Continued our tour of the city starting at 6:50 a.m. Supposed to rain, but it never did - sunny all day. Drove out of St. Petersburg to Peterhoff where Peter the Great’s Summer Palace is located. Interesting ride out - 10’s of thousands of apartments in huge complexes. The majority of St. Petersburg residents live in apartments, which are very expensive. 1600 square feet with 2 bedrooms cost apx. $3500 per month to rent and $350,000 to buy. Once you get out into the countryside you find small houses with very nice yards & gardens. The have had subway stations since 1930s. Stalin built them very ornate and in fact one looks like a Greek temple. Trains run apx. every 90 seconds and they are very clean and safe. Because St. Petersburg is built on marshland, ... read more

St Petersburg is a relatively young city, by both Russian and European standards, and was only founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great. Despite its short life so far, Petersburg has a rich and exciting history. From the early days of Peter the Greats "Venice of the North" to the modern events of the 1991 coup detat, the city has always bustled with life and intrigue, revolution and mystery. Up bright and early. Started out cloudy and rainy, but by noon the sun was out and we had a beautiful day. It’s so hard to believe I am really in Russia - never in my wildest dreams did I ever consider this as possible. Drove around the city first and then spent an hour on the Niva River looking at the grand old homes and ... read more

Went on a “City Highlights” tour which ended in “Senate Square” at the Lutheran Church, which was as decorative and iconized as a catholic church. Part of the tour included a stop at the Temppeliaukio Kirkko (Rock Church). Completed in 1952, it is built entirely underground and has a ceiling made of copper wire. The underground Rock Church is built inside of a massive block of natural granite in the middle of an ordinary residential square. Roger went back to the ship and Judy, Roxie and I went to Café’ Kappeli to meet Hannes, a fellow 911’r - 112 in Europe who lives and works in the area. What a great time we had talking to him. We had Finnish bread and coffee or hot chocolate. Then he was kind enough to take us to a ... read more

Took a boat to the Royal Palace to see the changing of the guard, but we had a wonderful surprise and an experience of a lifetime. We saw a simple changing of the guard - not the usual pomp & circumstance show and watched as King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, their children Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine walked to the opening day of parliament. What a lovely family. Secret service everywhere with those little earbuds, walkie talkies and guns were around them - just like here with our President and his family. We met a lovely woman from Sweden who had taken her son to see the guard ceremony and she was pleasantly surprised to learn the King & Queen would be coming out. She has only seen them 3 ... read more

Slept till 10 a.m. Could not believe it. Roxie got up went to breakfast, came back and I was still sleeping so she went roaming the ship. I never heard anything until my phone rang at 10. I later found out it was Judy. We attended a session in the spa on “Secrets to a Flatter Stomach.” I doubt I’ll ever see that again, but it was interesting and I learned a few things. Went to the art show today with Judy. Bought 2 very unique “Wyland’s” - they are painted on bamboo and I got them for ½ what they are on land. One is penguins and the other is koala bears. Stephanie, you can’t have these. Also, I won a picture of a whale jumping out of the water. Went to dinner and the ... read more

Got up, packed, ate breakfast and took a taxi to the ship. We wanted the driver to take us by the "Little Mermaid" so I could get pictures from the front as the canal pictures show her backside. However, he didn understand us and must have thought when we said Mermaid that the ship was named Mermaid as we went straight to the port. We were on board by 12-12:30 p.m. Grab a bite to eat at the buffet and then Judy & I toured the spa and entered contests. I won a free foot/ankle massage and a lady who didn want it gave me her coupon for 50% off a hot-stone massage. Judy won a free couples mud rasul, where you exfoliate your body in salt and essential oils, lather yourself in cleansing mud and ... read more

Got up early and ate breakfast buffet (primarily pastries, meats and cheeses) and then walked to the train station for about a 40 minute ride to Hillerod where we toured the Fredriksborg Castle and chapel. Some amazing and VERY OLD art work. There were 2 weddings and 1 baptism so we walked into a little cafe and got something to eat, which we took back outside and picnicked along side the castle moat. Then we walked back to the castle to tour the chapel. Amazing! Judy, Roxie and I spent the evening at Tivoli Gardens strolling through the park, listening to music, watching the rides we dared not get on, people watching, taking lots of pictures and eating at a fabulous restaurant recommended by Rick Steves. Closed out the evening watching a ballet pantomime (beautiful dancing) ... read more

Set out on a 30-day adventure: 3 days in Copenhagen, 10-day Baltic Sea cruise and 18-day Transatlantic cruise. Ports of call will be Stockholm, Sweden; Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg, Russia; Tallinn, Estonia; Gdynia, Poland; Oslo, Norway; Copenhagen, Denmark; Edinburgh, Scotland; Dublin and Belfast, Ireland; Reykjavik, Iceland; Qaqortoq, Greenland; St. Johns, Newfoundland; and Ft. Lauderdale, FL - USA. I flew from Tampa to Washington Dulles and met up with Judy, Rodger and Roxie from Denver. We arrived in Copenhagen on 09/11 around 7:30 a.m. Went through customs, got our bags and checked in at the hotel. Judy and I went walking to scope out the city, while the other two rested. We walked past Tivoli Gardens and realized it was only about 10:30 a.m. - we of course thought it was mid-afternoon. We continued on to City ... read more
