Day 4 Today turned out to be a bit of a chill day on the beautiful island of Caye Caulker, I spent the morning walking round the island. A couple of years ago the 1 island became 2 islands when a hurricane ripped through it and cleared a path through part of it. The waves then rushed in and the current running through this section is so strong that it probably won’t join up again. But the good thing is that this area known as the split is a great place to snorkel and I did this today amongst the mangroves. The island is now only about 1 km long and in its widest point less than ½ km wide. What I like about it is the sandy streets and that there are no cars. ... read more

I spent all of day 2 travelling from Tulum to Caye Caulker and I’ve including the details in the boring bits below for those of you who do not venture this way in the future. At night I was faced with the usual problem of finding a veggie meal and ended up ordering a veggie burger that did’t actually contain a burger! Just salad, wouldn’t that be a sandwich! The next day I had booked a whole day snorkelling package which was amazing and ticked off another thing on my bucker list - swimming with sharks:-) The tour started at the Hol shan marine reserve and the guide took us across some fab coral with plenty of marine life. At one point I swam down to within 50 cm of a green moray eel they are ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Tulum January 10th 2012

So here I am on my travels once again and this time it’s a whirlwind tour of Central America. My flight took me in to Cancun and it was full of sun loving Brits who would be spending most of the time on the beach – God love 'em:-) My first Destination was Tulum, a couple of hours south of Cancun on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. On my first night in Tulum I statyed up as long as I could to get over the jet lag (Mexico is 6 hours behind GMT) but had to hit the sack at 20:00. The next day I was still adjusting to Mexico time and was up very early to hire a bike from the hostel and set off to one of the main attractions of Tulum, the Grand Cenote. ... read more

Europe » Romania » Muntenia » Bucharest » Centru Civic August 17th 2011

I arrived in Bucharest early in the evening so I went out for a couple of drinks and a meal before heading back to the hostel. I was surprised to find out that when I got back to there a party going on in its grounds. From what I could gather (as I had myself had a few drinks by then) it was a France appreciation society and they had invited lots of French expats for the evening. They didn't mind me gatecrashing!! I spent the following day wandering around Bucharest, it has the second largest building in the world (behind the Pentagon) - the palace of the parliament. It measures 270 m (890 ft) by 240 m (790 ft), 86 m (282 ft) high, and 92 m (302 ft) underground. It has 1,100 rooms, 2 ... read more

Europe » Romania » Transilvania » Brasov » Brasov August 15th 2011

Brasov is located in virtually the centre of Romania, 176km north of Bucharest. The city is in Transylvania and surrounded by the Carpathian mountains and as a result it provides a mix of amazing mountain scenery and German Medieval history in the old town. Brasov is the most visited town in Transylvania and it was packed when I was there in August, as a result it is a little more expensive than other cities but compared to most of Europe it was a bit cheaper. The following day I decided to climb the 900 metre Tampa mountain that offers great views over Brasov. At the top you can stand beside the Hollywoodesque Brasov sign that is lit up at night. Brasov has a huge Black Church next to the town square and from there the pedestrianised ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Sofia City » Sofia August 13th 2011

The bus from Skopje to Sofia took 5 hours and I was accompanied by another Aussie - they get everywhere:-) Arriving in Skopje I didn't have a clue where the hostel was so got a taxi and as usual he tried to rip me off trying to charge me in euros rather than Levs! The Hostel was shocking (Internet hostel) rock hard mattress and 1 bathroom for the entire place but I've had worse. The location was fantastic though, right in the heart of the city, next door to the only veggie restaurant in Sofia and above an Irish bar - what more could you ask for:-) Plus the bar sold one of my favourite beers - Zagorka and I had a few of these with my new chums from the hostel, a German guy and ... read more

Europe » Kosovo » South » Prizren August 11th 2011

The next day me and my new chum Michelle headed off from Berat to Prizren in Kosovo, to do this we first had to catch a furgon to Tirana, during the trip we were joined by an Italian Albanian who entertained us all for the journey, he didn't stop talking and had a typically Italian view on women much to the amusement of my travelling companion:-) Once we arrived in Tirana we had a walk round the building site and then caught the bus to Prizren, as with all the other buses it wasn't AC but this wasn't a problem when we were travelling through the mountains. The route took us on the brand new highway between these two cities, that had been built to the cost of an estimated 600 million euros. As it had ... read more

Europe » Albania » West » Berat August 9th 2011

Berat is thought to be one of the oldest towns in Albania and is overlooked by the Kala (or castle to you and me). I spent most of the day exploring Berat and started off with the castle, which was mostly built in the 13th Century, but with origins going back to the 4th Century BC. A very beautiful place with great views of the surrounding area, as I was walking up the hill to get to it I heard the crump of artillery shells in the background, which is always an intersting backdrop to any walk:-) There must be a firing range in the area unless there was another Balkan war taking place:-) Most of the castle inside the walls is in ruins, although there is a nice church which is worth a visit. Europe » Albania » West » Tirana August 7th 2011

I was joined by my chums from Skopje on the bus to Tirana but their hostel was full so ended up in the Albania Hostel, which was a most agreeable place. On the taxi ride to the hostel the driver advised that you don't have to wear seat belts in taxis only in Private cars, I did ponder explaining the merits of wearing seat belts (especially in Albania, as the drivers are crazy) but decided against it and resumed the conversation about Manchester United:-). The hostel had a bar and a puppy, what more could you want:-) The next day I had a walk round the centre of Tirana but like Skopje, it was also a building site, I think there has been an influx of money into the Balkans countries and they seem to be ... read more

Europe » Macedonia » Ohrid August 6th 2011

After the capital in Skopje I headed out towards the Macedonia/Albanian border and arguably the delight in Macdeonia's crown - Ohrid. The town of Ohrid lies beside the beautiful lake that also bears its name and in the summer it is awash with tourists. I couldn't find anywhere to stay in advance as all the hostels were booked up, however, I had heard that on arrival at the bus station you get mobbed by residents offering you home-stays so I chanced my luck and hoped there were some waiting for me when I got there. As it happens there was a reception party waiting and one of the most vocal was a huge bear of a man offering me a room but I wasn't that comfortable with the prospect of sleeping under the same roof as ... read more
