Having received no less than 4 texts within a half hour period from 'Our Dave' I am finding it difficult to make head or tail of some of them! I am undecided as to whether to just put in print what he said and let you bloggers work it out for yourselves, or do a bit of headscratching and solve them before I let you in on what I think he has said and done! (no skinny dipping today, but he does do something else......read on). Ok, I went for the latter of those two options after careful consideration, as I am in charge! (oh, the power.......!!) It begins in Lefkimmi, the 2nd biggest town, outside of Corfu Town, its a mix of old and new with lots of churches, and then on to Gardeno valley, ... read more

One small step for Shrek and one giant leap for Donkeykind! ok, enough of that! Have been wondering where to start with this, so I am going to repeat a text (one of many) that Dave sent me today :- If god invented peace, this is it. Cold Mythos (local greek beer for those of you that havent been before), view to die for towards Lefkimmi port ang Greece (mainland). I'm the only guest tonight, so being spoilt, going to try and get a tan now, its so quiet its just nature - perfect. so, that was his text, makes me feel like i should be working for the corfu/greek tourist board by publishing that! ok, moving on to the main event, Kavos is like a ghost town, only the barmen to see, had a good ... read more

well i have entitled this as day 1 but its the day Dave arrived, and as most of you are aware, he starts the walk tomorrow. He texted me and rang me today to say that he arrived safely, about 11am greek time and 9am UK time, to the weather you would expect from there, hot and sunny. As its one of only a very few days he has to himself, he explored Corfu Town and took in the sights, with the odd taverna involved as you would expect from 'our Dave'! he went to see where Prince Phillip was born at Mon Repos and the roman ruins at palaiopoulos and round to Garitsa to the town, anyone jealous yet? I am! A few beers later (his words) and a meal and i expect its an ... read more

Dave here. What a nightmare. Got the bus to train station and was waiting on the platform when I realised I'd left my rucksack on the bus!! It contained my passport, money, daily routes, maps, cameras, binoculars. Disaster. I left station and there were police around as they were covering station as it was being used by fans at the Blackpool v Cardiff game. They offered to help me even though they weren't local. They phone bus company. I decide to wait on road as the bus would return that way. The bus duely came and I flagged it down. Luckily for me the driver had my rucksack in his cab and on checking everything was there. Relief or what. Policeman said I was so lucky I should buy a lottery ticket. So I could go ... read more

Ever since I first visited them in 2006 Corfu Donkey Rescue have been my charity of choice and you can find out about them and their work here www.corfu-donkeys.com. (please copy and paste into your search engine) Unlike the donkey sanctuary in the UK CDR do not receive £millions in donations nor do they receive any money from the Government, either before or since the financial crisis. All workers are volunteers working for free. Following a dispute and the Government threatening to close them down over licences (even though there was no such licence) CDR now have a new permanant home so need even more financial help to build the shelters etc needed over and above their day to day running costs and all this at a time when the negative press and troubles in Athens ... read more

So Corfu (also called Kerkyra) is the northernmost Greek Ionian Island with a population of about 110,000 in an area of 593km2 making it one of the most densely populated areas of Greece. However it doesn't seem that once you step away from the Town and major tourist resorts. Corfu is very popular, especially with the British; why? Well it has some of Greece's best beaches. The climate makes it a very green island yet there is virtually no rain in the hot summer months. The scenery is outstanding, the north being dominated by the slopes of Mt Pantokrator, the fertile Ropa Valley, the beaches the vistas. The people are very friendly especially if you make the effort to say a few Greek words to them. Inland, often not far from the coastal resorts are hillside ... read more
