Soviet cartoon Look for царевна-лягушка 1954 мультфильм on YouTube for a beautifully made classic Soviet cartoon.
Compared to the original fairy tale, it offers some logical and ideological refinement (i.e. the immortal villain is a disgruntled suitor vs. Vasilissa's father; the nightly labor is done by Vasilissa herself rather than a bunch of class-opressed magical helpers; and the villain's "death by needle" is portrayed more literally), but it is a very well done cartoon.
Soviet cartoon I cannot thank you enough for your comment and directing me to discover this Soviet cartoon version of The Frog Princess. I have just viewed 38mins 55secs of Сказки : Царевна-лягушка which though in Russian I could understand and see the differences with my version. Thoroughly enjoyed it and opened my eyes to a treasure trove of Russian Fairy Tales in cartoon form. Really glad I put the time in to prepare my blog which in the spirit of oral storytelling reflected my own style in the telling but kept to the spirit of the version I had. Thank you again. A new world of Russian culture has opened for me that I shall explore and enjoy further.
Eggs and other such things Haha! Great punchline about the price of the Russian doll. At least it'll be a beautiful reminder to always check the price before purchasing. I agree about not wanting any big heavy souvenirs, especially at the beginning of a trip.
Eggs and other such things Initially the doll was smiling...ever since she's been laughing...along with Denise who has me paying it off for a lifetime! There's gotta be a lesson in there somewhere Tommy...but all I can do is wonder how I could have let it happen.
...a smile on my matryoshka doll's face Pt 3 not a problem - the judge has spoken - penance is dusting said matryoshka doll along with all that surrounds her in a radius of 50m for but not limited to a period of x years which will be determined by aforementioned judge!
...a smile on my matryoshka doll's face ...how many years will it take to work the price off? Pleased you asked - once you have worked off the vacuum cleaner - how much time do you have?
...a smile on my matryoshka doll's face Pt 2 Ouch!!! Haven't I paid off the vacuum cleaner I bought from the Whitmont Man all those years ago? I have done ALL the vacuuming for I don't know how many years in penance ever since!!! The World will be burnt up by the Sun before I've paid the World's most expensive matryoshka doll off...OUCH!!!
I am pleased I was tethered bc I could have been lost to the world when reading this blog... My goodness - those panoramas and accompanying sublime blues from Pete Cornelius were mindblowing, immediately transporting me to the time & place - thanks for that!
I wake up talking because when you have thousands of words to expel in a day there is no time to lose :-)
I could have been lost to the world Russian rivers at their best. Memories are what returns with us after travel. That I can relive the incredible beauty of life on the rivers with such an exhilarating soundtrack...panoramas of vistas that words cannot do justice...priceless.
...a smile on my matryoshka doll's face oh boy did I laugh!!! I do feel though you should rename the blog to "The 10 buck book & the million dollar doll!"
Wonderful Russian fairy tale... Glad you enjoyed it Bob...such a whacky tale I had to tell it. The book of Russian Fairy Tales opened me to so many aspects of the Russian psyche thus was certainly ten bucks well spent. That how I got it comes with such a great story still makes me shake my head...could be a fairy tale itself, but 'twas true!
Nice fairy tale Thanks for commenting Ake. There are many stories we can tell of our own perceptions when visiting a country. Sometimes it is nice to dwell on their own stories that help define their psyche and sense of place.
Journey through the Hermitage Love it! You made a trip to the museum feel like gliding through a magical realm. And the phrase, "the now of the looking and the then of the painting" is such a great sentiment and one that will stick with me the next time I am in front a painting.
Journey through the Hermitage You got it Tommy...'cept 'twas more like surfing than gliding! But the memories endure and Russia's beauty including incredible artworks were everywhere to see. More serendipity to share...more to come.
On Faberge eggs Several of the original Faberge eggs are missing and it is not known what has happened to them. I think I read a story that one of those was rediscovered only a few years ago. It was sold more or sell as junk. I have tried to find that story now but failed. So I might be wrong after all. /Ake
Is this the face of Russia? One of my first portraits in Russia, Tommy. One of so many with a smile on his face. Russia was a revelation in so many ways as my blogs attest. Enjoy!
My wife Denise & I like to travel "on paths less travelled" that capture our imagination, inspire my photography & where we mix with locals & remain safe.
