Current day, Chang'an is quite different than it was in 757. The city has been renamed to Xi’an. This city is now the capital of a province in China. Xi’an or Chang'an is one of the oldest cities in China today. Much like back in 757, Xi’an is a huge economic city. The city has been a part of the economic revival of China and has became an important cultural, educational, and industrial center. The amount of trade in the city must still be a big part of their city and the occupations of the people there; however, they are probably no longer trading rag paper and silk. Sadly the city of Xi’an is no longer the capital of China although it had been for many dynasties. Another similarity to old Chang’an is the huge population, ... read more

Today I have to replenish my stock of goods. Sometimes I can get my stock up here in the city, but sometimes I need to go down to the farms myself like today. I am off to the farms to find my best supplier. I have been working for this new expansion to my store, so I must be able to sell as much product all of the time! My favorite crop to sell is definitely the champa rice that was mentioned earlier. Not only does it taste great, but it's cheap to buy and in high demand! As I near the farmlands, I can see the change of landscape change from the urban city to the rural farms with animals everywhere and fields filled with growing crops. You will see tons of men negotiating on ... read more

It was finally the weekend! I am excited to be able to take my hiatus from work. Today I think I will travel to the Grand Canal. I heard that hundreds of boats use it each day to exchange their goods and travel to faraway trading cities. There is a dock not too far from my shop, so I am excited to see how this whole man made river thing works. As I walked up to the canal I couldn’t help but notice all of the activity that happens around here! I haven’t seen this many merchants in the same place ever before. I see a huge boat, bigger than I could imagine, being loaded with tons of silk, probably headed for Byzantine or the Islamic Empire. There is also a few guards around here, this ... read more

Just finished a long work day and am in dire need of a relaxing evening out. I on my to the city to find out more about the people around. While walking around the city I have bumped into a nice man who identifies himself as a trader from India. His name is Mitul and during our insightful conversation, I have come to realize that the more I look around the more prominent this new religion has become. Don’t get me wrong, like most people here, I am a confucian follower at heart, but I should probably go to one of these monasteries to become more informed about this movement. I hear that even the government is starting to back this new religion! I do not want to get caught out of the new trend. Since ... read more

It took me awhile, but I guess my first actual day is on March 2nd, 757. At this time I have finally made opened my first shop on the exotic silk road on the outskirts of Chang'an. As of what I hear, the silk road is so big that it is able to connect the great Tang and the opulent Byzantines. The silk road is very safe due to the help from the government to protect all traders which is great for business! Everywhere you look along the silk road, you will see schools and places with fine arts. Many different goods are exchanged along this trade route. It is quite the sight to see! A new big innovation is this new way to create paper that is more efficient/cheap and allows me to write more ... read more

I was born in 737 in a small village just outside of the great city of Chang'an. Right now it is the year 756 and the city is absolutely gorgeous. There are markets everywhere with beautiful purple silk, lots of food, and rice. The buildings are enormous and elegant. Our government has kept us protected, but I sense trouble brewing in the the office. The new guy, what's his name, An Lushian has just become general and I have a bad feeling about him. Nowadays everything revolves around the monasteries. Growing up my parents were Confucianists, but wanted me to follow the new trend of Buddhism. Anyway, growing up I always wanted to be a scholar official, so my father sent me off to school and I studied so hard for my exam. I passed the ... read more
