Hola This week has been quite hectic because we had 2 new people arriving and Mathilde was leaving, so we had to make lots of different school arrangements. I went with Rosa on Monday to do the Pregnant Girls project which was quite successful actually! We went to another health clinic in the area to get another list of pregnant girls, and ended up speaking to the main doctor for about an hour. He was really supportive and enthusiastic about the project and said he wanted to be kept informed of any updates. He also offered some of his staff to come and give talks to the girls about caring for their baby and to have talks with the psychologist as well. It was my last day doing anything with Rosa for Pregnant Girls, and it´s ... read more

Hola a todos So I went straight back to school last week, all better. I really love working at Alto Trujillo, because the teacher there is brilliant. I just look after 5 kids so I get to know them really well, and Issella gives me exercises to teach them and checks up on how it´s going every now and then, which I really appreciate. The journey there is always interesting as well because we don´t take a combi we take a colectivo which is basically a taxi that lots of people use. So as you can imagine the driver always wants to get as many people in the car as possible, we had 11 people in at one point! Quite a normal week at school last week, apart from on Friday when we got to paint ... read more

Helloooo everyone Well you´ll all be very relieved to hear that this blog entry wont be nearly as long as previous ones due to my having done absolutely nothing this week. For the first couple of days I thought I had TB (though this was more to do with the fact I only just found out that BCG doesn´t protect you from TB than any rational conclusions, and no I´m still not over that yet.) I just had a fever and a really bad cough, exactly the same as the one Bob used to have! What a blast from the past. Anyway, it was very annoying because I only went to school on Monday this week, but I should definitely be well enough to go back tomorrow so that´s good news. Last weekend was lots of ... read more

Hello all So since I last wrote an entry I´ve been quite busy, so this one might also be quite long. I hope you´re all keeping up! Since the Scottish ladies left, Kara and I moved into their room in the flat, which has been a success all round really. It´s not quite as noisy, although the people next door seem to think that just because we´re young it gives them an excuse to be incredibly loud all the time. If the dad isn´t snoring the baby is crying and if it´s not either of those things then they´re playing their tv at full blast all night. A couple of us went down to ask them to turn it down a bit and they said they only played it so loud to block out the noise ... read more

Hello all So firstly, I´d just like to draw attention to the title. How good is that?! Came up with it all by myself. I think it sums up what I´ve been doing since my last entry pretty well! So on Thursday last week I got to go with Rosa on the first day of the Pregnant Girls´Project. Slightly mixed feelings about it now, given how unorganised the run up to it was and what we actually did on the day. We seemed to spend most of our time on the bus to be honest. Rosa is, from what I can gather, something of an all round Social Assistant type person. I think she is involved with the local authorities, but does actually work for Bruce as well. She seems to know everyone and everything that ... read more

Hello all So I´ve finished my first week of school and had my first weekend here, and I´m starting to settle in quite well. I know all the kids´names now! But I´m finding my Spanish inadequate in many ways at school; for instance I don´t know how to tell them off very well which makes me feel terrible if they´ve hurt someone and all I can do is console that person and not properly resolve the situation. What has struck me though is that at this age they really are just like children anywhere in the world. There are some who are bored and so misbehave, some who want to learn and some who just are cheeky; just like all groups of children. Their outlook will start to change though when they get sightly older and ... read more

Hello all! So I arrived eventually after about 17 hours of planes, and so far the peruvians are lovely, and everyone in the flat is very nice, though all more in tune with the whole travelling thing than I am at the moment. I'm living in a flat with about 12 other volunteers, all between 18 and 29 bar 2 Scottish ladies in their 60s! My spanish is being tested quite a bit at the school because the kids dont know how to explain things in different ways, which is funny because I thought their spanish would be so basic I'd get it straight away! I've been put in a school which is really quite far away from the centre of town, like a 35 minute bus journey. I go with another volunteer called Lorenzo who ... read more
