Monday, 20 September 2004 What will this trip away bring? I'm sitting in another motel, this time in the South Australian town of Millicent. I arrived via Ballarate, Hamilton and Mount Gambia. It included one stretch of road west of Hamilton that I had never driven on before. Millicent is not a large town but it does have more then one Child Care Centre. I remember a few years ago I worked in another Kindergarten in town. Booked into the Diplomat Motor Inn which sounds pretty up market. Its a nice enough motel and the owners are friendly. The room I'm in, seems to be equipped for pensioners. Bars in the bathroom allows you to move from the shower to the toilet then to the wash bowl without loosing your grip on a handle. The shower ... read more

Sunday, 12 September 2004 It was a wet morning when I said goodbye to my girlfriend on the steps of her unit. Its been ages since I have left for a country job without booking ahead but could not decide where to stay. Once I got over the hills near Yea the weather improved and progressively brightened up as the car got closer to the New South Wales border. I had read all the details concerning this job and wasn't too impressed with the numbers. Families: One-hundred and seventy. Children per day: Sixty-six. All housed in four rooms but that number was over five days I must add. A new centre in a new suburb of Wagga. Could not find the street name in my New South Wales road directory. Found one street that looked the ... read more

Sunday, 5 September 2004 After getting back from Beechworth I spent two nights in Melbourne before leaving on Sunday morning for a trip to the west of Victoria. Most of the day was taken up driving to Warrnambool. Booked into the City Heart Motel. The room has cable TV and the accommodation is good. Messed around on the computer for a while before ordering a meal from a local restaurant which was delivered just after six o'clock. Watched TV for the rest of the evening. Monday, 6 September 2004 The weather has been good and I hope it stays that way. It was a nine o'clock start. As I walked through the door of the three year old kindergarten, I introduced myself to the two ladies who were in charge of the centre. Didn't get a ... read more

Friday, 3 September 2004 Arrived in Beechworth on Tuesday night after photographing at a centre in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. The Golden Chain Motel just on the out skirts of town is a nice motel with a verandah around the outside. The back rooms have a commanding view of a valley with the township on the distant hill. I'm on the other side of the motel that doesn't have a view but the room is still good. I'm getting my meals at a pub in town that allows "charge back". It took me a bit of time to find the centre on Wednesday morning, when It eventually came into view I could not remember working in this Day Care Centre before. I thought getting shots as the children played outside might make life easier later ... read more

Sunday, 15 August 2004 It's been a very long day, that consisted of a eight hundred kilometer drive, taking nine hours to complete. The Princes Highway starts a few suburbs from the centre of Melbourne and I joined it on the outskirts of Dandenong. Traveling towards the east, the road took me through many towns I have already worked in, Warragal, Morwell, Traralgon, Sale and Bairnsdale. Some of these have been visited this year. It was a good run out of Victoria. Mostly blue sky's with some scattered clouds that bought patches of rain. It was around two o'clock in the afternoon when I made my first stop at the Gippsland town of Cann River. Half an hour later I crossed into New South Wales. The weather got worst after I crossed the border. This part ... read more

Sunday 8 August 2004 Last week I was in the east of the state. Tonight I'm in Warrnambool which is on the west coast of Victoria. Most of the day was fine but it started to rain this evening, so much that I had to drive to the pub for my meal which was a bit annoying because the establishment was within walking distance. I'm here for a couple of days working in town. I don't know what has come over me. Its as if the end of the financial year and I'm ready to give up photographing children. This job is getting the better of me. I'm visiting the same towns and because I have photographed all the interesting sites on previous occasions I'm now finding these towns boring (except Glenrowan which I hadn't worked ... read more

Monday, 2 August 2004 I had been to Bairnsdale early on this year. On that occasion I spent a lot of my spare time looking for wild life in the local swamp. This morning I carried my gear next door. The centre is next to the motel. I worked my way through all the rooms, doing what I could until time ran out. The children that missed being photographed will have to wait until tomorrow. Back at the motel I trimmed twelve exposed spools of film, (results of three hours work) packed them into a box and headed off to the post office. Tuesday, 3 August 2004 I dreaded going to work this morning, I knew it was going to be hectic. Baby room first, soon run out of new children in that room. Into the ... read more

Tuesday, 27 July 2004 I spent the first two days of this week working in Scoresby. It was a Day Care Centre. Three rooms with as you can guess, lots of children. On both days I had to swap from room to room to photograph children as they became available. Ten spools of exposed film went back to the studio on both days. When todays session was finished I drove to Glenrowan. Ned Kelly was a bushranger who roamed the local hills in the 1800's. His career ended in a dramatic shoot out, unfortunately in an effort to end the stand-off the Jones's Glenrowan Inn was burnt to the ground by the troopers. Only a sign indicating the historical event can now be viewed. It was mid afternoon when I arrived and after booking into the ... read more

Sunday, 28 June I started my week by spending six hours behind the wheel driving to Adelong in NSW. We are in the middle of winter and the weather was typical of this time of year. On my journeys up the Hume Freeway I usually take my first break at a town called Holebrook, about half an hour east of Albury. It was around three in the afternoon when I arrived outside the Bed and Breakfast establishment in the main street of Adelong. The room was very basic but comfortable. After taking in my overnight bag I decided there was favourable weather for a trip to the Adelong Falls. Beside the creek are ruins of an old gold mining company. History tells us, it was one of the first areas in NSW to find gold in ... read more

Sunday, 19 June My job for the next week was in the central NSW town of Temora. I waited until 9 am before starting what turned out to be a five hundred and forty kilometre journey. It took about three hours before I crossed into New South Wales, near the towns of Albury and Wodonga. I left the Hume Freeway twenty five kilometres out of Albury and joined the Olympic Highway and drove north towards the town of Culcairn. The weather was overcast but it only rained a few times as the road took me through the towns of Henty and The Rock. Near Wagga the road by passes the township and I was on the last eighty kilometres into Temora. I had pre booked my accommodation at the Goldtera Motor Inn. I know the proprietor ... read more
