Middle East June 7th 2009

June 7th We got back on our beloved bus today, for the last time, thank the Lord. Herzl was very helpful, but by the end his insistence on certain types of activities go very...boring. I could only do so many markets after really long days in hot hot weather. Anyway, we got on the bus, went to a couple museums, one of which was a kibbutz that manufactured ammunition in secret right before their declaration of statehood. That was cool. It was all hidden under the kibbutz and the entrance was under the washer machine, which lifted up and turned o the side to reveal teeny stairs. Very awesome, and quite movie like. Lol. Then we went to Old Jaffa and explored there, and had dinner in a Shouk-shouka, which was delicious Arab food. Said goodbye ... read more

Oh my gosh! Today we climbed up to Masada, which is a 1200 foot rise in elevation! All switchbacks, in the sun. It was brutal but so worth it. Really gorgeous view of the Dead Sea, which we went in afterwards. That is surreal. And I'm running out of minutes, so I'll finish this later! I am not quite sure that I can do justice to what we did today. We got up early (but not early enough) and left the hotel at 6 to climb Masada. We should have left at 4. It was almost hot by the time we got there, driving along the shore of the Dead Sea. At the bottom, looking up along the switch backs to the castle on top 1500 feet above us, I was incredibly intimidated. Not gonna lie, ... read more

We started the day with the usual great breakfast we have had available most mornings, three or four kinds of yogurt (plain with olive oil and spices is fantastic), eggs, cucumber salad, cheese, and fruit. Mmmmm. Then we went out, got on our camels, which were all tied together, and our train was led on a little loop in the desert by a Bedouin dude on foot. Not exactly camel racing, but it was fun in a little kid’s carousel sort of way. I can now say that I have ridden a camel! After the camels we rove to the entrance of a park called En Avedat and hiked up a trail along a little stream in a canyon of the desert. Really beautiful. There was all sorts of kinds of rock layers. The most interesting ... read more

Yesterday (Tuesday, June 2nd) We began the morning with a visit to the Bahai gardens in Haifa, which were very beautiful. I do wish that we had had a bit more time there, as it was lovely, and very peaceful, even in the middle of the city. We then shuffled back onto the bus and drove off. We made a quick stop at the monastery above the Cave of Elijah and made a quick jog down to a lookout, back on the bus, and to the Tomb of Elijah. Forgive me for skimming through these things, but the sop following Elijah was really wonderful, and, in my opinion, the best stop we’ve made so far. We drove out to a midsize Arab town to stop at a college for educating teachers in the hopes that we ... read more

Middle East June 2nd 2009

Ok, so, I’m not exactly sure where I left off last time, and from my notes I’m not really sure where I am even! I know that at some point during the last two days we did the following: We went to Yad Vashem, which is the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. It was very well done, very very intense. The tour was great, but it had what our Prof calls a “very pointed narrative,” meaning there was lots of information there, but the tour covered really only the worst parts. There was next to no mention of the heroes, the people who fought back, only the stories of people killed, and the nations that turned away. And that’s legitimate. It did happen. But I think to basically ignore the positive things that happened in spite of, ... read more

So the plan was kind of to do posts a lot more often, but really, I don't feel like spending my time here in Israel, so once a week will do! Course, we're doing so much it's really not enough. We flew into Tel Aviv Monday afternoon and went to Neot Kidumim, which is nature park that is designed to mimic what the area would have been like doing modern times. It was pretty cool. You could look over and see a Arab village across the valley. And a firing range right under it (Israeli of course) that was raising a whole lot of smoke. And then we drove to the Galilee area to our Kibbutz and had a great dinner and slept like the dead! Morning brought a slew of things to do, most memorable ... read more

I made it! It is soooooo incredible here I don't even know how to describe it, well, I can't, but I'm taking notes, and I will do a longer, more in depth report when I can use my own computer and add photos (there is only one here that can connect to the internet, for some reason). The group I am with is awesome! Our guide is great, and we are cramming everyday with so much stuff that my head is already whirling, and we've only been here for a day and a half! I love you all! More later...... read more

Three days until I leave for Israel!!!! Can you tell I'm excited? I finally got my itinerary for the trip, so now I know where I'm going, but I think I'll leave it a surprise for all of you! Also because I'm not so sure that Seth won't change it up at some point...There is some pretty cool stuff; a kibbutz on the shores of Galilee, a stay in Bedouin tents (My grandfather wanted to know if we would be sleeping with Bedouins in the tent...He gets some very odd ideas). So what have I been doing... A lot of getting ready (buying sunscreen like mad!) I went horseback riding on Tues and Wed, adn felt that a bit last night, but it was fun. I love riding my aunt Betsey's old Arab. He acts like ... read more

I just spent the last two days with some amazing women in their eighties. My grandmother had a reunion this weekend of the year abroad she spent in Geneva her Junior year of college. Seven women cam, and I tell you, if I can be like they are when I am 82, I will be a happy person! Can you imagine going to spend a year in Europe, just after World War II? They traveled over on a converted troop ship, stacked three bunks high, and landed in England, went to the Follies Bergere with a bunch of young men recruited by the US Embassy! Their teachers set that up! How cool! And then they continued on to Geneva, where they spent the rest of the year. How brave to head off with reliable way to ... read more

Ok, well, I'm glad that I decided to spend a bit of time figuring this out, though to be fair, I think any program would have kicked me off after the hour long sidetrack that I took. Maybe I need to go for walk... It is rainy and cold here in New England, which is why I've finally sat down to do all this stuff that I probably should have done on Monday, like get my travel insurance and such. Oh well, better late than never. I did get my Skype account up and running, and now I have an online number that anyone can call, and my computer will ring. How cool is that! It is a local Riverton Wyoming number (Sorry Twin Butte, they had Riverton Wyo, but not Canada, let alone Twin Butte) ... read more
