Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don November 28th 2010

Koh Phi Phi must translate into paradise cos that is what it is. Actually split into two islands: Phi Phi Ley is the smaller of the two, the home of Maya Bay (the beach) and has no accommodation on it. Just 2 mins by boat is the slightly larger Phi Phi Don which homes much of the traveller and night life. Our time there orientated around Phi Phi Ley, starting at the famous Maya Bay from Leonardo's film 'The Beach'. It is without a doubt a slice of paradise. We arrived with hundreds of other spectators and this beach was very busy but I assume u can go early morning or later in the afternoon in the hope of something slightly quieter. With white sands, crystal clear water and blue skies, we didnt mind sharing the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket November 22nd 2010

We made our way (by very slow but cheap mini bus) to Phuket. Arriving in Patong Beach was a little overwhelming. There is no telling where the main area is straight off as the place is quite simply so large. We soon found out its much more the location for a holiday than for the average traveller. In Phuket everything is orientated on having a good time, and doing so RIGHT NOW. Not much of it revolved around being in or seeing much of Thailand. After a few beers the main strip of Bangla Road could easily be compared to that of any main strip in any holiday maker resort in Spain. Prices are hiked up in Phuket too, again tailored to the holiday makers. With shopping centres, cinemas and bowling alleys it was the closest ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Krabi November 20th 2010

After an hour ferry ride and 3 hr bus ride we arrived at Ao Nang Beach in Krabi. Not somewhere we had initially intended on visiting but from hearing about its beauty from fellow travellers we exercised our rights as travellers and altered route slightly. From stepping off the bus we were welcomed by the sight of beautiful beaches with long-tail boats scattered along the waters edge, something straight off a postcard. There is a good amount of development on the streets but local laws prohibit development on the beaches themselves so it affords Krabi the perfect balance between holiday destination and remote paradise. On our second day there we ventured to nearby Railay Beach. It cannot be accessed by land due to the large limestone cliffs surrounding it but 15 mins in a long-tail boat ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui November 17th 2010

We headed off to the neighbouring island of Koh Samui. We stayed on Chaweng Beach which, after being on a much more deserted island for quite a while, suprised us with its over- development on the beach and main streets. Although much busier and more commercialised here, we knew we would enjoy the increased variety of entertainment, restaurants and bars. We took a tour round the island with a local guide who was enthusiastic about what we would see. We started at the temples on the island and our first stop was the "Jao Mae Kuan Im", or Chinese Lady Monk, located in the far northeast of Koh Samui island - the temple is over 100 years old and helped us to better understand the differences between Chinese and Thai Buddhism. We also visited the 'Big Buddha' ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan November 12th 2010

We travelled by ferry east to the island of Koh Phangan and checked in at the Friendly Resort in the main party town of Haad Rin. After dropping of our bags we all headed out for dinner to The Lucky Crab restaurant which, without exaggeration, had everything you could ever imagine on its menu! The cocktail list on its own was 10 pages long! We headed down to a fire party on the beach where young guys were flame throwing before they broke out the fire ring and fire skipping rope which people were invited to have a go at (we observed on this one - Im not sure how I would explain that one to the insurance guys!) Other games were on offer too though, the boys headed off to shoot hoops and based on ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Khao Sok NP November 11th 2010

We all stepped of the train after no more than 3 hours of interupted sleep each to the southern area of Surat Thani. We were taken under our local guides wings - Tuk. We left our big backpacks at his mums house and headed with an overnight bag for a long-tail boat ride into the heart of Khao Sok National Park. We stopped half way for some cliff jumping and swimming in a lovely cove. By lunch time we had reached our accommodation for the night which were basic floating bungalows made from bamboo in the middle of the national park. The food there was provided by the locals and was very delicious. We had a spot of kayaking before tucking into the Sang Som and laughing the night away. Some of the gang decided to ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok November 8th 2010

Bangkok is all it's said to be. Bold and daunting from the minute you get off the plane, however we instantly felt more at ease and safer here than we did when arriving in San Jose. Perhaps we were lured into a false sense of security by the politeness and the thousands of greetings and smiles you recieve from the Thai people before you have even left the airport. One thing Bangkok knows well is its target audience... the backpackers. It has everything they could need, cheap accommodation in the heart of the city next to crazy nightlife, cheap markets and extremely cheap food and drink. Our first meal there was a delicious Thai green curry and a local beer- Chang- which came in at a whopping £3 each in a nice restaurant. A beer here ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Miami September 12th 2010

We reluctantly tore ourselves away from Orlando and started our road trip down to Miami Beach. If we thought the roads and drivers were crazy in Massachussetts then we changed our minds. They were nothing in comparison to the six lane showdown that were the highways of Miami. Those not so confident drivers steer clear! Miami is definately a place for the loud and proud. If you've got it, flaunt it here. If you dont then it seems they wonder why bother to come in the first place. Miami Beach in particular was focussed on the flash and bling and the motto is being seen to be seen. The party scene here was good but overpriced for what was on offer. The accommodation was very dated and definately trying to hang onto that art deco era ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Orlando September 7th 2010

After an unexpected two day flight delay we eventually arrived in the Sunshine State that is Florida and what better way to begin our road trip there than to begin with the home of Disney: Orlando. It was a welcomed change from the generic rice and bean diet of central america and we would be lying if we said that we werent instantly swept away by the consumerism of the place. Every shopping centre/ plaza you go into seems to be competing with the worlds greatest palaces and they have almost every brand you've heard of and more, often at discount prices. One mall was literally about the size of Edinburgh! However, we werent really there to shop we were there for magical kingdoms, seaworlds and universal studios. And where better to start that Harry Potter ... read more

We headed north across the Arenal lake where we had the full spectacular view of the, very much still active, Arenal Volcano. The volcano erupted a couple of times while we were there and sounded like nothing more than thunder with some clouds of black smoke and rocks coming from the top but we were informed that quite often the lava will run red down the side. After trekking for 3 hours to get as close as we could to the volcano (still only one mile) we were disappointed not to see any red lava. However our local tour guide kindly offered us some (almost a litre) of the local cocktail containing the local spirit of Cicique. It tasted very much like vodka but sweeter as it was made from sugar cane. The guide informed us ... read more
