Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini July 10th 2006

I arrived in Santorini along with hundreds of other tourists. We approached the island through the caldera while everyone snapped photos. This place is like a dream. Is this for real? Perched high upon the caldera rim appearing to defy gravity, or at the very least, just waiting for gravity to do its work and pull the whole town of Fira into the sea. But it stays, thankfully, for the tourists. It's hard to describe the mob scene as we departed the ferry boat. Hundreds of people rushing forwards all with packs, suitcases, roller suitcases, motorcycles. We are at the base of the cliff, dramatically announcing itself as a shear wall of volcanic rock, layered red, black, and grey. I walk into the crowd of domatia, those raptious owners of pensions who want us to stay ... read more

Here I am in the Aegean, the blue waters, blue skies, the heat and the wind. The ladies really do mob you as you depart the ferry. I took the first room offered, it was so much more than the hostel in Athens; anything would have been more inviting than that hostel in Athens. Ah, those drunken Aussies, and their path of destruction. I watched as one sat on a sink, it collapsed, he fell on top of the porcelein and cut himself badly. He went to the hospital and I never saw him again. The ferry ride was nearly 7 hours leisurely cruising the Aegean with many locals and backpackers. The Port of Piraeas is every bit as confusing, congested and for it's charm, a touch of the Third World. I stepped off the modern ... read more

Yesterday, I took a 12 hour bus tour to see the Corinth Canal, ancient Mycenae, the town of Napflio and the theatre at Epidavros. This was not a tour one could DIY. There just isn't the public transportation in the area, so I signed up for this tour. Only about 15 of us in a big air conditioned coach. The guide didn't stop speaking for the entire trip, she had to tell us about everything. Ancient Mycenae dates from 1500BC, from the time of Agamemnon. We also went into the fabulous domed tomb. This part of the trip was so windy that it could take your breath away, and knock you off your feet. And very sunny. As part of this tour, we had lunch in a large restaurant, all catered for us. Traditional Greek food ... read more

Today I climbed up to the Acropolis. I saw the Parthenon, it is most impressive. I wandered around it several times. On top of the hill, it was so windy that I couldn't wear my hat. Fortunately, it's still quite cloudy here. Periodically, the sun is covered by clouds to give us a respite from the rays. But it's just not hot here at all. What's going on? As I was leaving at about 10 am, the multitudinous tour groups started to arrive. They're funny to watch as they hundle around their leader fearing to wander off. However, everything is well explained to them, unlike my tour, which I read from my guide book. Then I walked to the Temple of Zeus. A mostly ruined temple with only a few of the hundred or so columns ... read more

It's cold and windy here in Athens, not what I expected. The flight into Athens was a comfortable BA flight complete with movie that I didn't watch and hot chicken lunch that I did eat. And this was the same price as the Easy Jet flight - no comparison. I am so jet lagged, I am not sleeping when I am supposed to and tired during the day. I am finding this trip more difficult to adjust to. Perhaps because I wasn't well rested before I left. Since it was overcast, I went to the Natrional Archeological Museum. Lots of old things. The Minoan treasures are great. And I saw the death mask of Agamemnon. Somebody check my spelling. There were so many statues from each period of ancient Greece, Archaic, Classical and Helenistic. Truly awesome ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London July 2nd 2006

I went to the British Museum today. I figured I should see again all of those treasures pilfered from Greece, Turkey and Egypt, before I travel there myself. So I saw half of the Parthenon today. The Elgin Marbles are rather fabulous, all those missing noses and hands. I get to see the other half of the Parthenon tomorrow. I think London is a fabulous city, but I get to say this because I don't live here. Would I have the same attitude if I had to put up with the traffic, crowds, buses, and weather all year? I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the Atlantic. Even on a Sunday it takes hours to cross town in a bus. And I wouldn't have it any other way, just because I ... read more

I arrived in London in one piece only to be shattered when England lost its quarter final match against Portugal. I enjoyed watching this scoreless game. But which team to support now as I like to see new teams win, but Portugal beat England. Can I really hold grudge? London is hot and humid, a good warm up for my trip. We BC teachers have a new contract, so even though England lost, I have a headache, I had a student whine and complain in the 13th hour yesterday, I am still ahead. I am staying in a new place for me, at the YHA in Kensington, a converted old mansion in Holland Park. More annenities than where I stayed on my previous visits to London in Earl's Court. Only a short visit to London this ... read more

I am now counting down the hours before I leave. All the exams are written by my students, we are now in the process of counting books and cleaning rooms. It's still hot here in Vancouver. Well, let's say, it's hot for Vancouver. I am about to test my tolerance for heat while travelling around Greece, Turkey and Egypt. I have less than half of my trip planned and all pre-booked. There is a 6 week gap between my time in Athens and my time in Istanbul that is not booked: I am going to drift around the Aegean Sea where ever the breeze sends me. My 2006 summer Odyssey. I am sure I'll come back with stories of Sirens, nymphs, being blown off course, vicious sea storms, and the cyclops. But I've only got two ... read more

It's Sunday, 5 days before I leave for my hot holiday in the Eastern Mediterranean. And it's hot here in Vancouver, so I guess I'll be travelling to Greece to beat the heat. I have all of my items purchased, and my home is nearly clean enough to be left for my summer house sitter. And with England winning their round of 16 game today, I am keen to go to London to watch their quarter final game against Portugal. I'll be saying good-bye to my students this week as they write their final exams. I hope they do well, despite the heat wave that will distract them. And I'll be saying goodbye to my friends, family and colleagues. I have three weeks planned in Greece, three weeks in Turkey and two weeks in Egypt. A ... read more
