Our time in Costa Rica is now offically over and we wanted to take a minute to say thank you to all of you at home who have been following along on our adventures. We know many of our family and friends are reading our blog and it means a lot knowing that you are keeping up with us! We are just as curious about what is going on in Canada (or wherever you happen to be!) so if something interesting is happening in your life please send us a note... we miss you all very much! We hope you enjoy this very long post... we promise to start writing shorter ones! Our last day in Costa Rica was definitely a sad one. We began to feel so comfortable and at home with the city, our ... read more

So the time has arrived where we are changing projects. Our extended weekend was absolutely amazing as the adventure part really started in here in Monteverde! It was finally a beautiful day in the area and so many less rain clouds that we were able to actually see Arenal Volcano! After arriving back from La Fortuna we got dropped off at the Hotel Montelena where we were once again greeted by the very friendly staff. We waited for our ride Olivier and said our goodbye to Amy. We got into the microbus with Olivier and as we expected he spoke only Spanish. He was nice enough to stop along the way at a couple of viewpoints. The second was the highlight as we were about 250 ft above the farm valley looking down at the farm ... read more

Sunday morning (November 27th) we left Santa Elena via JEEP-BOAT-JEEP transportation to La Fortuna (the town near Arenal Volcano). The roads between Santa Elena and La Fortuna are so bad that a bus trip alone takes almost an entire day, so given that we were pressed for time we opted to take a "jeep" (actually a microbus) to Lake Arenal, then a boat across the lake, and then another "jeep" into La Fortuna. This trip was slightly more expensive but only 3 hours long. It also gave us the opportunity to experience some more rough roads, narrow bridges, and breathtakingly beautiful scenery (as well as some interesting horse transportation - see pic!). Due to a mix-up in booking, Leanne ended up with a different JBJ company, so we said goodbye at the hostel and hoped to ... read more

This post is well overdue and is quite long, however it is well worth the read! Friday morning we woke bright and early at 5:00 to catch the 6:30 am bus from San Jose to Monteverde. The trip is only about 160 km but it takes 4 hours; this is partly due to factors such as city traffic and multiple stops, but mainly it is because the roads into Monteverde are crazy. The last 18 km of the trip accounted for a whole hour of the travel time! This section of road is extremely narrow with many tight turns and ascents, with a fairly steep drop off on the side! In several places we came to standoffs with approaching vehicles where someone had to back up and make space for the other to pass. It didn't ... read more

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been fooled more than once by a day that starts out gorgeous and sunny, only to experience a downpour in the afternoon. After being caught in the rain a few too many times, we now carry our raincoats everywhere. These, and our waterproof hiking shoes, have proven to be our best purchases for the trip so far, especially since we will be spending the next week in an even wetter area of Costa Rica - Monteverde! After 3 weeks of teaching we decided to try something different for our last week of volunteering, so we will be living and working on a coffee farm just outside of Monteverde all next week. We leave tomorrow morning bright and early so that we can enjoy the weekend there as tourists ... read more

We've been here 2 full weeks now and it has been a while since our last post. While we haven't really done much over the last week, a lot has happened. First item of note - the discovery of gluten-free pasta! Twice!! We found rice pasta here in a grocery store in San Pedro (see photos) and again in Manuel Antonio last weekend (rice/corn penne imported from Italy!). It is always exciting to find GF products while traveling. In keeping with the food theme, we also had a cooking lesson from our Mama Tica and we learned how to make Gallo Pinto (the typical breakfast dish of rice and beans with a secret sauce!). We suspect that it will never taste the same when we make it, but we will try all the same, provided we ... read more

So in some ways you could say we are still living for the weekend... while we are definitely enjoying the volunteer work, the daily commute (which is new to us!) takes its toll and this weekend we decided to escape from the city for a needed break. Along with 12 other Maximo Nivel volunteers (and our fearless driver, Leo) we piled into a microbus on Friday afternoon for the 3 hour trip to Manuel Antonio, which came highly recommended by pretty much everyone we have met! After checking into our hotel (Costa Verde) and having dinner, all 14 of us set out in search of the beach. By the light of the full moon (and some help from the iphone light app ;) we managed to find our way down a steep hill, across a mushy ... read more

Finally some photos! These pics don't have a whole lot of relevance to this blog post, but they give you a little taste of what we've been up to - enjoy! Rio Azul - November 8th Yesterday we woke bright and early (before 5:30!) in order to make it to our school by 7am. Escuela Francisco Gamboa is in a poorer area called Rio Azul (blue river), and we take 3 different buses to get there and it takes about an hour. The bus system here is good, but there is no such thing as transfers! We arrived only a few minutes late (had to wait for 2 of the busses) but it wasn't a problem - Costa Ricans are (we're told) notorious for their tardiness! We met Gabriella (Gabby) the English teacher and introduced ourselves ... read more

This is a long one! Much has happened in 2 short days and it already feels like we've been here forever (yet at the same time there is still much to get used to). Our flight from YYZ to SJO was good and relatively uneventful. We watched 2 movies - Bad Teacher (not great) and Friends with Benefits (pretty cute). It's funny... throughout our time in transit it still felt like we were in Canada. We proceeded through customs and immigration without issue, and even collecting our bags at the carousel felt familiar. When we stepped out of the terminal however, we finally started to feel like we were someplace new. It was a bright and sunny 20-ish °C - quite different from the 0°C weather we had left a few short hours before! We were ... read more

Finally, after feeling a little like chickens with our heads cut off over the past few days, we are nearly prepared and beginning to relax. We'll spare you all the details of what exactly we've packed (mainly because it appears we have squeezed in a little more than planned) but the photo shows what we will be lugging around for the next 3+ months. Hopefully we haven't overburdened ourselves. Thankfully, many items are consumables, which should help to lighten the load along the way. D&D have been good to us over the last week and so we are likely beginning this trip with a few extra pounds that, hopefully, will also be shed along the way. We have been doing our best to appreciate all the comforts, familiarities and luxuries of home, which recently have included ... read more
