Tuesday 4-12 Fly Cape Town to Jo’burg, to Abu Dhabi, to Istanbul in 24 hours. A VERY long day of flying, sitting, eating airline food and having to sit next to some very smelly people. At least it gives me some time to work on the blog, right? ;o) Wednesday 4-13 to Tuesday 4-19 I love Turkey! And not just the poultry kind! We arrived in Istanbul and were immediately smitten with the city. It’s cool to think that we’re straddling both Europe and Asia right now. Nick Note: Here the politicians can truly say “I can see Asia from my house” to boost their foreign relations credentials. Istanbul is really a beautiful city with tons of history and gorgeous architecture. Our first truly European city and it’s a welcomed sight. After driving around South Africa, ... read more

Thursday 4-7 to Sunday 4-10 Today we headed to Cape Town, but first, we made a stop over in Franschhoek for some wine and cheese tasting. The Western Cape is known for its wine country and Franschhoek was a cute little wine-tourist town – lots of picturesque vineyards and white Victorian buildings. It was very reminiscent of Solvang in Southern California. The wine was less than spectacular – although the shiraz was really good. We also hopped onto a tour of a local chocolate factory where not only did they teach us about chocolate, but gave us loads of free samples and even made some fresh milk chocolate and hazelnut bon bons for us. Delicious!! And surprisingly enough – I didn’t get a migraine from the aged cheese, the red wine or the chocolate!! It’s a ... read more

Tuesday 4-5 to Wednesday 4-6 Around Tsitsikamma, we visited the largest and oldest (700 years) yellowwood tree in South Africa, known as the Big Tree. Considering the giant red woods in the U.S. and the giant fig trees we’ve seen in Australia and Costa Rica, this tree paled in comparison. Not so impressive and sadly not very yellow ;o) But it was nice to take a stroll in the crisp morning air. I didn’t realize how much of South Africa is managed forest. Everywhere we drove, we passed acre after acre of planted pine trees and logging trucks. More impressive than the Big Tree was the world’s tallest bungee jump (217m) at Bloukrans River. We watched the jumpers while sipping our hot, creamy beverages from the safety and comfort of a viewing platform. It was cool ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Eastern Cape » Jeffreys Bay May 12th 2011

Saturday 4-2 Today is our longest driving day in South Africa: over 700km. We got up early and were on the road by 5am (ugh). But we got to East London by about 3:30pm – so, not too bad. There’s seriously not much to see in East London, so we headed to the movie theater and saw Hall Pass. You could definitely take a “pass” on this movie. Very predictable and over the top – that’s how starved we’ve been for movies. We did watch a little bit of the cricket world cup final, though – yay for India! Sunday 4-3 to Monday 4-4 Headed to Port Elizabeth and Jeffrey’s Bay today. Man, South Africa is absolutely dead on Sundays! Nothing was open. We stopped in Port Elizabeth to get a bite to eat and practically ... read more

Sunday 3-27 to Tuesday 3-29 Well, the honeymoon in Africa is over. The first few days were great and Kruger was amazing, but then we went to Swaziland and were thoroughly unimpressed. Nick Note: We went to some pretty poor countries on our trip; Cambodia, Nepal, etc., but none were as obviously poor as Swaziland. But while Cambodia and Nepal are beautiful and enjoyable in many ways there was little, if anything, attractive about Swaziland. Our accommodations were filthy and customer service seriously lacking. Add to that the fact that we were seriously ripped off by the travel agent we booked our trip with in South Africa and you have two very unhappy campers. We’re trying to work through it, though. We have two days in St. Lucia on the coast of the Indian Ocean. It’s ... read more

Tuesday 3-22 to Sunday 3-26 After saying goodbye to Trent, Allen & Amy (thanks for a great week guys; hope you feel better Allen!), a 3 hour plane delay (a scene that could have been pulled right out of an episode of 30 Rock – seriously, the pilot kept saying “just another 30 minutes” over and over again), and a 12 hour layover in Abu Dhabi (hope all is well, Angel!), we arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa. At this point, we realized we had been sitting down for nearly 48 hours straight and we were about to embark on a 21 day coast to coast drive across South Africa, where we would do nothing BUT sit in a car most of the day. My hips are tight just thinking about it. ;o) But here we go! ... read more

Sunday 3-20 to Monday 3-21 When we first got to Jaipur, we were a little disappointed that we would be traveling on the actual day of Holi and would only be in Jaipur for the previous day’s Elephant Festival. Turns out, it was probably better that way. As we drove from Jaipur to Rathambore National Park we were amazed to see people in the streets (all men of course, who knows where the women were or how they celebrate) absolutely covered in tikka powder. Humans that were once all shades of brown were now completely purple or green with bright yellow hair or a bright red arm. The amount of color on people was astounding and of course they were having a great time sneaking up on people in the streets, throwing powder or colored water ... read more

Friday 3-18 to Saturday 3-19 Once off the stalled train, we got into our Jaipur hotel around 3am, f’ing exhausted and poor Allen was sick as a dog. We’re not sure if he caught something from the food or just from the surroundings, but he ended up spending the better part of Jaipur sick in bed. Poor guy :o( He was unable to join us for our first jaunt into the city to see the bazaars and the old Pink City (so named for the pink coat of paint the maharaja decided the city needed). The bazaars were a trip! With the Holi Festival only days away, the bazaars were full of people stocking up on everything imaginable, especially tikka powder. One of the main reasons Trent, Allen & Amy decided to join us in India ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra April 28th 2011

Thursday 3-17 We woke up in Agra to a delicious breakfast of parantha w/ yogurt curd (yum!) and realized that my Kindle was irreparably broken even though it had just been sitting in a closet for a few days after we’d used it without a problem. Ugh, we are not having much luck with the Kindles on this trip. Oh well, good thing Nick got a replacement for his! Since we only had the afternoon in Agra, we hired a car & driver for the day to take us to all the sights. First, we headed out to see the sunrise over the famous Taj Mahal. When we got to the ticket booth, rather than waiting in line with the rest of the white tourists, an Indian suggested that Allen get in the “Indian line” and ... read more
