I live in Iowa and am going to China this summer with my oldest brother, Andy. I'm hoping to keep this updated, but I can't promise anything.

Tuesday Andy and I walked around Shanghai and then he took me to the airport so I could catch my plane. It took a while to get the plane flying so we ended up getting to Toronto late. So I had to rush through customs and they held the plane for me so I could get on. My checked bag didn't get on my plane though so it's coming today and they're fed-exing it to my house tomorrow. When I got to the Minneapolis airport, my grandmother and a family friend were there to pick me up. We drove the 4 hours home and then of course I wasn't tired so I watched TV until I did get tired at 9. I had a lot of fun in China and Taiwan, but I'm glad to be ... read more

So last Thursday Andy and I walked around a lake in Hangzhou. Then we got our stuff and hopped onto a train for Suzhou. When we got there we checked into our hostel and then brought some clothes over to Andy's friend, Mike's, apartment to wash. Friday we went out to lunch with Mike and hung out in our hostel for the afternoon. in the evening we went out and walked around a while. Saturday we went to breakfast with some of Mike's friends. Hilarity ensued. After that some of us went to Tiger Hill. Mike had a backpack to put water in so we were joking that he kept a weapon in there and that we was going to kill us. We kept saying things like, "Why is Mike leading us into these empty woods?" ... read more

Monday Andy and I decided to have a day to relax and go to the beach. We went to find some breakfast first because we decided to go in theafternoon. We went to a grocery store and got some oreos, Spongebob sticks (which was just pocky) and some various little cake like things. We ate, what ended up being brunch because of what time it was, in the little commons room in our hostel where we ended up meeting a guy from Holland. It was kind of cool to meet him because everyone else at our hostel was Chinese. So after we were done eating we went up to our room and put on our suits. Then we took the bus to the beach. Just as we were figuring out where to set up, our Dutch ... read more

So we just went to eat at Pizza Hut. It's so much different than Pizza Hut back home. It's more like a sit down restaurant than a fast food place. You can't just get food to go, you have to eat there. Not only that, but the food is different. First of all they have some really weird flavors of pizza. The only one I can remember is popcorn chicken...yeah weird. They at least have some regular kinds too. They also have soup, salad, appatizers, entrees and dessert. Andy and I got some really good potatoes with cheese and bacon. Unfortunately, they came in a really small dish, so we kept joking that we should have ordered 6 of them. If we had know how little amount of potatoes we were going to get we also ... read more

Okay I need to bring you up to speed with what's happened the last few days. Friday we went to the zoo! I think my favorite animals to see were the giant pandas and the red pandas. Saturday we did more sightseeing. We went to a museum where all the relics from Beijing were put after Chiang Kai-Shek stole them and fled to Taiwan. Unfortunately we couldn't take pictures in there, but it was really interesting. Andy and I laughed at a sculpture we saw because it looked kind of like Joe. Another place we went to was a Confucious Memorial. We also went to a Martyr memorial where we saw the changing of the guard again. Sadly, it closed shortly after we got there so we didn't get to see much. While we were walking ... read more

Thursday was the first full day of sightseeing I did. We started at the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. Chiang was the leader of the Nationalist during the Chinese Civil War. The Nationalists lost to the Communists and Chiang had to flee to Taiwan where he later became president. Then we went to find some food and waited for it to stop raining. When it did we headed to a park to walk around a while. After that we went to the Sun Yat Seng Memorial Hall. He was the founder of Taiwan or as Andy put it, he was their George Washington only more Chinese-y. While there we got to see the changing of the guard and then a dancing waters show. Then we headed to Taipei 101, which is the second tallest building in the ... read more

Wednesday morning Andy and I went to find breakfast and ended up choosing McDonalds. They're everywhere! It was raining so I got to break out my raincoat and umbrella. We walked around the city a little until around 11. Then we went back to our hostel to pack. We rode the train to the airport and got our plane tickets. After getting something quick to eat we went to our gate right as it was boarding. It was a quick two hour flight to Taiwan. There was some turbulence that was not very fun. Every once in a while our plane would plummet for a second or two before correcting itself. When we got to Taiwan we rode a bus into the city and then rode the train until we were close to our hostel. We ... read more

Sunday afternoon my parents and I drove up to Minneapolis to stay the night because my plane was leaving early the next day. I didn't get a lot of sleep that night so the next day when I had to wake up at 4 am I was really tired. We got to the airport and I got my tickets and headed through security. I easily found my gate and sat down to wait for boarding. My first plane was about a two hour ride to Toronto. My plane was so empty I didn't have to sit by anybody. On my plane was members of an orchestra that were going to China to play. I wish my band trip was that cool, but no we had to go to Chicago instead. Anyway, when we got to Toronto ... read more
