After a great night's sleep in our Ramada Inn hotel room, we had breakfast in the lobby and loaded the van and headed east once again. We drove into Tennessee and through Memphis. We stopped to see our friends Leroy and Betty Jane in Huron, TN. They moved here last year from Appalachicola, FL. After a tour of there 11 acres, we had a delicious lunch, Borsch soup, sandwiches and salads. Plus muffins and cookies for dessert. Betty Jane is quite a good cook. After our visit we followed Leroy and Betty Jane into Lexington, TN and we headed north on Route 22 and got back on Interstate 40 East. We drove through Nashville at rush hour and decided that we would get another hotel room for the night. the temperature was 88 and although it ... read more

We spent one horribly hot, sticky night at Red Rock Canyon State Park in Hinton, OK. We didn't get much sleep. Also the bathrooms were filthy. We decided to have breakfast on the road and stopped at the Gavin Family Restaurant in Hinton. I had pancakes and coffee and Dave had a bagel with egg, cheese and ham with coffee and the bill came to $7. We stopped for gas at the shell and got 2 coffees to go and they cost $.54 each. It was a very hazy, hot morning and again not much to see along the road. We stopped for a break and Dave got peanuts in the shell. What a mess they made in the van. We stopped at Wendy's in Van Buren, AR and had a good lunch, and we were impressed ... read more

We slept in this morning, getting up at 7:45, had breakfast and a walk and continued on our eastward journey on Route 40. The scenery was mostly flat, a few hills, a mesa here and there, and power poles and towers. There was one straight section of road where I saw a tower at the horizon and I counted the miles that we could see ahead of us - it was 14 miles. We past two distant wind farms to the south of the highway while in New Mexico. We crossed over the state line into Texas. This was our first time ever in this state. We lost another hour and are now in Central Time Zone. As we crossed the state line we noticed that white grass replaced the dirt on the flat roadsides. There ... read more

Woke up to a very chilly morning, low 30’s, but it warmed up very quickly. The sun made the hillside in front of the van a beautiful gold color. We walked this morning, we have both put on about 10 pounds in the last 5 weeks and want to reverse that as soon as possible. Well we are heading east and really not stopping after today until we reach Tennessee. Today’s destination - Petrified Forest. As we travel along Route 40 there is not much to see, but trains. We saw train after train, some that seem miles long, a lot of them were carrying truck trailers. We got off the highway and were on scenic old Route 66. We got coffee and washed the dust of the west off the van, maybe for the last ... read more

After a great, cool night’s sleep we had breakfast at our campsite. We were up early because we came back into Arizona and are now on Pacific Time. At 6:00 am here is actually 7:00 am for us. We caught an early shuttle bus to the west side of the canyon, which is the only way to see this side. Dave says they eventually want to make the Grand Canyon accessible only by shuttle bus. The system here is very good, the signage is good and the shuttles are easy to use. We took the shuttle to the first stop, and then hiked the Canyon Rim Trail for the next 3 stops, about 1.5 miles. We saw great scenery of the canyon and the Colorado River. We took the shuttle once again between points and then ... read more

We had a major upset this morning - the shampoo leaked all inside Dave’s bag with all his stuff in it - and it took him a half hour to wipe everything off. Looks like I was the last one to use the shampoo - ut oh. We went over to the Ute Mountain Casino to have breakfast. This was our first stop in a casino this whole trip and we didn’t go in to gamble, just to have breakfast. It was great - all you can eat buffet for $6.95. I had an omelet fresh made to order at the omelet station and fresh fruit - we really miss not having fruit every morning. We drove on down Route 160 South and entered New Mexico, both of our first visit to this state. We stopped ... read more

We decided to have breakfast out this morning. We stopped at a restaurant with lots of cars outside and figured it must be a great place to eat. Well there was only one waitress and we waited 20 minutes just to get a cup of coffee and 45 minutes for our food. We drove to Cortez, Colorado and stopped at the Welcome Center there and I picked up a free t-shirt I ordered a couple of months ago. This is the first time for Dave in this state. We were able to get a new cable to use to attach my computer to my cell phone at the Radio Shack in Cortez. I broke the old one a couple of days ago and was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get a new one until we ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Arches National Park September 14th 2007

First stop on our agenda today, Arches National Park. What great scenery. We saw Balanced Rock, Park Avenue, the Three gossips, the Lamb Rock, North and South window and the Turret, Delicate Arch and numerous other landmarks in the park. We took several hikes and got a lot of exercise in for the day. We then drove to Dead Horse Point State Park. There is a very scenic overlook there in the Canyonlands. You can see the Colorado River from there, looks like a green snake, meandering through the canyon with twists and turns everywhere. We had lunch there in the picnic area. We then drove to Canyononlands National Park, the Island In The Sky area. More great scenery. My favorite was the Mesa Arch, which I hiked to see. We drove to Monticello to camp ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Capitol Reef September 13th 2007

Arrived at Capitol Reef yesterday afternoon and camped at Fruita Campground. Fruita was a Mormon pioneer settlement from the 1800's which lasted until 1941. There is a school house, a blacksmith shop, the Gifford Farmhouse and barn, and the apple orchids by which they earned their living. A herd of mule deer ran through the meadows of the campground this morning. We started out our day here, on the scenic drive. There are warnings everywhere not to enter if a storm threatens. The roads are frequently washed out when it rains. In the wash-outs, blacktop areas have been replaced with concrete - black top washes away - concrete doesn't. At the end of the scenic drive, we took the dirt road to Capitol Gorge. The gorge was beautiful, but really scary. Huge rocks hanging precariously over ... read more

First thing after breakfast was our hike on Navajo Loop Trail at sunset Point. The trail is 1.3 miles round trip down a very steep canyon trail into a canyon that gets narrower the further down you go. We had to bend down though a “window” in the rock about half way down. When we got to the bottom the canyon was about 2 feet wide, but hundreds of feet high. Dave did the entire loop trail. I turned back at mid-point to take some great shots of the canyon. We then drove the 15 or so miles to the end of the park at Rainbow Point. As we passed a meadow, I saw a coyote very close to the road. I was within 100 feet of it and got out to take a fantastic photo ... read more
