Unfortunately, we were not able to see any deliveries today because none of the moms were far along enough in their labor to deliver within the time frame that we were at the hospital. I toured the postpartum floor which was very interesting to see! I saw that most of the mothers were breastfeeding. There were many posters on the wall describing the benefits and proper techniques of breastfeeding. Additionally, the postpartum floor was all one room divided by into sections based on a variety of factors. We also witnessed a nurse teaching six mothers how to bathe their babies. It was adorable!! One minute all the babies were happily swaddled/ asleep and the next minute they were all screaming during their bath! I noticed that the nurse taught the mothers to place the baby in ... read more

This morning, we attended the morning ceremony and were off to the hospital! I changed into the Thai labor room outfit, and started getting to know the specifics on the moms who were in active labor. There were two moms in active labor when we got there, and so we followed their cases until they delivered. Around lunch time the moms still hadn’t delivered so we quickly ran to lunch and got back just in time to see both deliveries which occurred within 30 seconds of each other. It was crazy having to jump back and forth between mothers to see who would deliver first! One of the mothers had a very big baby and it was fun to assess the newborn because it was so cute!! So far, I’ve been able to witness four deliveries ... read more

Today, I spent most of the day observing in the Thai delivery room. Much like the United States, the staff changes into clothes at the start of the shift. We wore purple gowns, hair nets and a face mask. In the United States, the nurses change into light blue colored scrubs. The biggest difference was that the Thai labor room requires you to change your shoes to sandals or crocs! Most of the employees were wearing socks with sandals. As I walked in, I instantly noticed that the unit was very busy. There were several moms laboring and a few more in their high risk room. I was paired with a mom who was in the active phase of labor, and I followed her case until she delivered. I was amazed at how different the delivery ... read more

After a wonderful weekend in Chiang Rai, I was ready to start the week at the hospital. We began the day by attending the morning ceremony at 8am. Then we were off to the hospital! We were warmly welcomed by the nurses at the hospital. They presented a PowerPoint full of information about the hospital, the most prevalent health conditions and other interesting facts. The rest of the day was spent touring various wards within the hospital buildings. I feel as though I learned a lot about the hospital just through the tour. Some aspects were very similar and different to the hospitals in the USA. I definitely noticed a major lack of resources and outdated medical techniques. I felt very lucky to have been placed in the Labor Room!! As we walked through the unit, ... read more

After a restful sleep, we woke up to have breakfast with our host family. They prepared rice, pork and vegetables along with some cereal and bananas. Then we made our way over to the community center where we would practice using the 7 tools as a group. We were taken by tractor to the center! Since we arrived in the dark the night before, we hadn’t had a chance to get a good look at the village. In the daylight, it was so beautiful! This particular village was directly on the border of Northern Thailand and Laos. The only thing separating the two countries was a fast-moving river. We started using our 7 tools for community assessment by splitting up into groups and dividing the questions among the groups. Then we interviewed community health volunteers by ... read more

This might be my favorite day yet! At 9am, we drove to the elderly school at San Meung Temple. Basically, this is an elderly school which meets 3 times a month to provide fun activities for the elders of the community. The Thai elderly are adorable and so kind!! There was another school from south of Thailand visiting so it was cool to interact with them as well. The school meeting began with us introducing ourselves in Thai. Then, we participated in some morning exercises with everyone who was there. After doing a bit of exercise, it was time to do the activity we brought for the elders and it turned out even better than I planned!! While planning what to do for the activity, I looked on pinterest for some inspiration! I saw a picture ... read more

Today was an extremely relaxed day! Aj. Cutie taught us about the 7 Tools: The Community Assessment. This lesson was in preparation for a weekend in Chiang Rai where we will be spending a few days in a rural community. Our plan is to ask community members what type of medicine they value. For example, traditional Thai medicine or Western medicine. I am a bit nervous for Chiang Rai because I have no idea what to expect. I have never been to a small village and slept in someone’s home so I feel a bit uneasy! Although, I know that God’s plan for me this weekend in Chiang Rai is too important to let my fears get the best of me. I’m excited to learn and to grow as a person and as a nurse through ... read more

Well, this morning I woke up with a horrible sinus headache and major congestion! I was feeling very ill prior to breakfast, and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to keep up with the group today. After food and some DayQuil, I was feeling somewhat okay enough to venture out into Chiang Mai with my group. Our first stop was the Donkaew Hospital which has a Thai Traditional Center. At the center, we learned how to make a compress ball by combining various herbs with salt in a cloth, balling it up and tying the corners of the cloth together to form a handle. The massage therapists use these compress ball during massages to relieve aches and pains throughout the body. They steam it and firmly pat it across your entire body! After we ... read more

Around 10am, we were warmly welcomed by the staff at BCNC. Thai people are extremely hospitable! We each introduced ourselves in Thai, and went over the schedule for our time here in Thailand. The staff at BCNC is amazing, and take care of our every need. I feel so blessed to have met these people that I may not have otherwise. This cross-cultural experience is unique in that we are immersed in another culture while practicing and building our nursing skills. After lunch, we visited the Donkaew Hospital, and received a very warm welcome from them as well! We were presented with information about the hospital and a delicious snack of fried banana peel with purple tea. I learned that 70% of mothers in the community breastfeed! This is incredible. The director of the hospital said ... read more

This was a packed day! We started the day with an early breakfast before boarding the bus to the Doi Suthep Temple. In order to get to the temple, we rode in trucks up the steep mountain! The Buddhist temple was breathtaking and unlike anything I've ever seen before. I really enjoyed getting to view a Buddhist temple. I don't know very much about this religion but I would really like to!! It's so different than the religion that I practice so it was very informative to observe some of the religious practices at the temple. We were able to see people pray to Buddha and interacting with monks. Aside from these observations, it was incredible to see first hand the beauty of the temple. There was so much color (mostly gold) and extravagant architecture. After ... read more
