Yesterday after trying to find a bus out of Ayutthaya to the border and having no luck, we decided to head back to Bangkok via train the next day to catch a train to the border. So we paid our fifty cents (US) and got to Bangkok within about an hour and a half, then grabbed some lunch at good ole KFC, our last taste of fast food for a while, and hopped on a 5 1/2 hour train for only $2! The train ride was hot, dusty, and smoky (due to the burning trash and fields). We looked like coal miners by the end of it thanks to all the ashes and smoke, hopefully we don't end up with black lung. Luckily we got on early in Bangkok and were able to have seats for ... read more

Thailand has offically ruined us. We've been here at Thailand's best tourist attraction for 2 days and we have seen it all, well most, after awhile they seem to look the same so we skipped a couple. As you can see by the pictures the ruins are very old and pretty cool. Ayutthaya the site of all the ruins was the capital of Thailand back in the 17th centry for over 400 years, until dun.. dun.. the burmese sacked the kingdom after 2 years of presistent attacks. This feat was not an easy one, as the Kingdom had over a million people so the temples are miles apart, which made biking to them an all day affair. Yes i said biking to them on a single speed bike as old as the ruins thenselves, no easy ... read more

This blog will be a bit all over the place as it will sum up the rest of our time in Bangkok. For being two people who don't really like big cities, we spent way more time in this one than we had intended, mainly due to being sick the first few days, then trying to find a dressmaker and having to time things around the dressmaker's schedule, oh yeah, and me taking a Thai Massage Course (after much encouragement by Trevor of course!). One thing to absolutely take advantage of in Thailand, especially in Bangkok due to the many options, is beauty/salon services. I got a haircut for 100 Baht (that's like $3), lots of waxing for 350 baht, and we both got hour long massages for 180 baht. All this at home would have ... read more

Well we are both feeling much better since our last blog, although still kicking the last of whatever bug got us. We've spent the past few days touring/shopping our way around Bangkok, although mainly shopping and just walking around. It took a couple days of searching but I found someone to make my wedding dress (Yay!) and Trevor and I both are having suits made (work type suits). Talking to tailors is pretty exhausting...trying to figure out when they are bullshitting you and when they are giving you a good deal. Trevor is a great negotiator though so we've been able to get fair prices. It's funny though when we initially started shopping around we didn't know much about the different fabrics and asked similar questions to each of the tailors and got totally different answers ... read more

Just a quick note to say we're finally caught up on our Blog entries. Sorry about falling behind, this is totally our doing, not the blog service as some of you have wondered about. Thanks for keeping up with our travels! We are taking our first sick day on our trip as we are both feeling pretty ill...something we ate no doubt. Hopefully we'll be up for exploring Bangkok by tomorrow, but for now, just laying low. We'll probably be here about a week we're guessing. ... read more

Due to the great distance, we decided to break up our journey to Bangkok by stopping a few places for an overnight stay. February 17th: Took the Ferry to Phuket where we stayed for one night. We stayed in Phuket Town which wasn't all that impressive. Definitely saw signs of the rampant prostitution that the area is known for. February 18th: Took a LONG bus ride from Phuket to Chumphon. This took basically all day and was another rather windy route that had us swearing off bus travel for a while by the end, trying to hold our lunch at every turn. Being that it was a "local" bus, they really packed the people on and we stopped a million times to take on more passengers or let others off. Luckily we smelled worse than the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don February 14th 2008

Today we left the mainland once again and headed to the infamous island of Ko Phi Phi (aka Ko Phi Phi Don), along with all the other beach going tourists in Thailand. We had arranged to be picked up and brought to the ferry terminal in the morning. Little did we know it would be a cattle car taking us there. It was one of the open air pick up trucks completely packed with backpackers and their bags. Neither of us had a seat and Trevor was practically hanging off the back. Luckily it was a short ride and the ferry ride over was uneventful. Ko Phi Phi was one of the places hit really hard by the Tsunami in 2004, but except for a few signs, you'd never know it now as it's completely built ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Krabi February 12th 2008

We took a bus from Pak Bara to Trang, where they off loaded us from a scary little mini-bus to a double decker super VIP bus, decked out in all pink decor and a TV playing endless Thai Karaoke videos, which all pretty much sounded the same, but luckily nobody was singing. When we got to Krabi, the bus dropped us off in the non-touristy part of town, so we got a tuk-tuk into town (after walking a ways and realizing we had a long way to go). We actually turned down several tuk-tuks because they were overloaded already but they wanted to put three westerners and their backpacks in (seeing nothing but dollar signs) but we insisted on waiting for one with more room, which worked out well since we met a local guy who ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tarutao Marine NP February 10th 2008

We got off the ferry on the island of Ko Tarutao, a national park area. One of the things Tarutao is known for is a prison that was on the island. They actually had one prison for political prisoners and one for regular prisoners. Apparently the main security on the island was deadly saltwater crocodiles and Sharks. However, there were escape attempts, some successful, and eventually a mutiny where guards joined with prisoners and got into piracy in the area. Many prisoners died of malaria as well. Sounds lovely doesn't it? That's why we went there, figured we'd avoid all the tourists. Well, we certainly avoided the crowds! All the vendors at Pak Bara tried to tell us there would be nowhere to stay on Tarutao except tents, which we were willing to do, and told ... read more

Asia » Malaysia February 8th 2008

Overall Malaysia was full of nice people, we only got ripped off a couple times (and only by a little bit). They don't have a lot of sites to see, which is probably why we didn't see as many tourists there. Another reason you don't see a lot of tourists and sites is that so much of the country is covered in palm oil trees, trash, typical water pollution. Also, the sidewalks are a bit dangerous at times...grates seemed to be ready to collapse underfoot at any moment and many already had, leaving a gaping hole in the walkway. I think there are more motorbikes than cars, although from what we hear, this is true all over southeast Asia. The food was good but there wasn't a lot of variety; we always leaned toward the ... read more
