Hello again from Australia! My time is now drawing to a close down here, and I am trying to savour every last minute, hard to believe I will be on a plane back to Calgary in less than two days! As such, this is going to be a very brief entry, I will add in more detail upon returning to Calgary when I have much more time, no new friends to hang out with and when the internet is free! After Fraser Island we headed down to Brisbane for three days and three nights. We have two friends there, Sophie & Shelley who we met in Paris, and they showed us a great time. The weather was not very good, with rain every day, and our hostel was not great, tiny rooms and not very nice ... read more

Picking up where I left off, we continued playing cards and other games on our first night on Fraser, making friends with some of the people from other jeeps on our tour, including to girls from Vancouver, a kiwi girl and a guy from Germany. Eventually nine o'clock rolled around and off went the lights in the cook shack, so flashlights in hand we all gathered up our drinks and headed down to the beach to continue the party. I've always enjoyed beaches at night time, and this was no exception, plus with no light polution, the star gazing was quite amazing, and being in the sourthern hemisphere, there are some constellations down here that I have never seen before! There were probably about 40 people down on the beach initially and many were singing and ... read more

Hello again from Brisbane! We have survived the camping extravaganza on Fraser Island and are now in Brisbane for a few days relaxing/recovering and catching up with some old friends. But, this entry shall be all about Fraser Island, as it was an incredible trip, we met some great people and I definitely had some of the best days of my life out there. The trip started Wednesday Morning with the orientation kicking off at 6:45 AM, there were about 40 people booked on the tour. Basically, Fraser Island is entirely made of sand, there are no paved roads, only sand roads, so only 4X4 vehicles are allowed. They had already divided us into groups of 10 or 11 to a vehicle, and even from the moment we met our group I could tell it was ... read more

Well, I am now in Queensland on the Sunshine Coast, although so far, we have only seen about an hour of sun, tomorrow we are off to Fraser Island for three days and two nights of 4x4ing on the largest sand island of the world, it is going to be great! In the meantime, I will get you all up to date, when I last left you it was Sunday, April 5 and we were headed up to Phillip Island near Melbourne for the world famous penguin parade... After successfuly navigating us out of the Melbourne city centre we made our way towards Phillip Island, there were showers on and off in the area, and as a typical rainy day activity we stopped off at a winery to taste the local flavor. We ended up tasting ... read more

Hello Again! I last left you in a rush off to an Aussie Rules Football game, which was awesome, and more on that in a bit, but first I'll pick up where I left off back on Friday, April 3. After finishing with the Old Melbourne Gaol, it was raining again, so we headed off to the centre mall for some lunch, more fast food of course, but I did have a panini with some healthy stuff on it! After the late lunch we wandered down to Melbourne's Federation Square which is basically a cool square where they host many cultural events. It was still raining so we killed a bit of time in the visitors centre and then it finally stopped raining we headed outside. The Melbourne International Comedy festival is going on right now, ... read more

Well, we have made it safely to Melbourne, and I think it's time for another travel update, its been a few days, but I think I should be able to fit in the highlights! I last left off after our rainy day trip to the Blue Moutains on Tuesday, the forecast for Wednesday was for more rain, and they were not wrong. We slept in a bit Wednesday morning and given the cloud and threat of rain decided to take an easy day. After some breakfast we headed down to Darling Harbour to check out the Sydney Aquarium. I made the smart decision of bringing my old U of C student ID card along, and was able to score a $10 discount for the aquarium, which is always good. The aquarium was fantastic, saw lots of ... read more

We've now had a few great days in Sydney and are adjusted to the time change, so I figured it'd be time for another update! Monday was a nice hot sunny day so we headed out to the world famous Bondi Beach. It took about an hour on the public, which stops quite frequently, upon stepping off we were treated to an amazing view of a great long, white sandy beach. We plopped down on a spot close to where we could swim, slathered on the sunscreen and then proceeded to enjoy a few solid hours of vitamin d. I was quite impressed with the life guards, who were very attentive and good at making sure the surfers stayed out of the swimming area, the waves were'nt too big, but some were probably close to ten ... read more

Well, we've made it safe and sound to Sydney, and it only took 20 hours of flying! The flights weren't too bad, just a little on the long side. I managed to sleep about three hours intermittently, and killed time watching a bunch of movies, but the Air Canada 777 was quite a nice plane and there was even some extra leg room for my 6'2" body! Upon arrival in Sydney at 8:45 AM customs and quarantine went smoothly, getting fogged with pesticide on landing was slightly annoying. Shane had an issue with his Visa, his middle name had been entered as his last name, which took about 20 minutes to get sorted out, but after that we breezed through and out into the taxi queue. The taxi downtown to our hostel only cost $26 which ... read more

Hello all, and welcome to my blog of Australia 2009. I guess I should first give you a bit of background info... I am headed to Australia for three weeks with three of my buddies (Alex, Tom & Shane), we're doing the whole backpacking thing, starting in Sydney, down to Melbourne and then up to Brisbane and the Queensland coast. Alex, Tom and I backpacked through Western Europe in spring of 2007, which was an awesome trip, the goal is to make this one as good or better! Anyways, we leave Calgary Friday night at 8:30 PM, connect in Vancouver to our flight direct to Australia, which leaves Vancouver at 11:45 PM Friday night, 15.5 hours later, we will arrive in Sydney on Sunday morning, hopefully Air Canada's new 777 is all its made up to ... read more
