What a place to spend the last few days of this trip. Amsterdam has so many different things to do, in all different areas of the city. We started the morning with a tour of the city, with the same company that handled our Barcelona and Prague tours. I have yet to be disappointed with them, and they've showed us around each city quite thoroughly. We went through all different parts of the city, including the canals, the old city walls, the red light district, and the old religious areas. Every area of the city was covered. It'll be a great city to explore for the next few days. One of the cool things about a trip like this is that you start to realize how old everything in Europe is. Amsterdam has been around for ... read more

Hello, Amsterdam! Unfortunately, this means my Eurotrip is closing out. Friday afternoon, I say goodbye to this amazing, educational, slightly crazy, unforgettable summer. But until then, there's still plenty to see and do! We slept in this morning, packed, and left our beautiful apartment. We had a 5:05 flight, but the airport is about 30 minutes outside the city, and when Marie was coming in, she also had an issue with the shuttle not showing up. On top of that, we were flying easyJet, which, as a budget airline, was super-cheap, but also meant we had to check. So we wanted to be there early, which meant that we had to try to catch the 2:00 shuttle to account for all the possible variables above. That gave us too much time to just hang out, but ... read more

Sorry for the late posts. Our internet has been out for the last day or so. Anyway, the bar crawl last night was wonderful. We all had a lot of fun, and it would be incorrect to say that we went to bed early. As such, we didn't really get out and movinguntil noon today. We first went to get food, which, for the second time in 2 weeks, ended up with a full fish on the table in front of me. To be fair, it was trout. And delicious. After that, we headed up to Prague Castle, which is one of the most important parts of Prague. Partly because the various countries and empires that occupied this region have been ruled from there for several centuries. It has a huge cathedral, along with a village ... read more

This city is truly gorgeous, I have to admit. I found that out even more by waking up at 5:30 for the sunrise from the Charles Bridge. After going back to bed for two hours, we headed to our tour, which took us around the city for 3 hours. We hit every section of town, from the Old Town to the New Town to the Lesser Town (rough name). We toured with the same company that I toured with in Barcelona, and it was entirely worth it. Not only was the tour spectacular, but we got some great food advice. Our guide mentioned a place called the Beer Museum (which is actually a bar), where you can try a flight of five different 0.2 liter beers. He also recommended a few foods to try, especially svičková, ... read more

Hello, Prague! The city where beer is cheaper than water. The city also known as the most beautiful city in Europe. Some say it's for the sights, some say it's for the beer. Take your pick. Both are great. As for the most beautiful city bit, I completely see where those who say that are coming from, even after only about 15 hours here. I'd be hard pressed to agree, simply because there's so many different kinds of beauty. Sarajevo was beautiful because of its Turkish architecture. Barcelona had the modernism movement that took over the city. They're both beautiful as well. However, in terms of the 18th- and 19th-century look and feel, I can agree that Prague wins in that category. It's an absolutely gorgeous city. So, after getting up at 4:00 this morning to ... read more

I would describe today's activities, if I had the words. Unfortunately, I don't. We went to visit Versailles, I can tell you that much. I tried to impress upon the group how large everything there is beforehand and failed; I doubt I'll do much better here. But let me attempt. For starters, the grounds are 800 hectares. For those of you at Northeastern: that's more than 27 times our campus. For anyone else: about 1500 American football fields (including touchdown zones). It's hard to image, really, without seeing it. It takes approximately an hour to walk from the Palace of Versailles to the opposite end of the cross-shaped Grand Canal. That's on the left side of the gardens. On the right side, you can try to head over to the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon, or ... read more

What better way to see a city than to spend your morning underground? In a super-old and creepy graveyard? That's what we thought, so we got up at 7 to go get in line for the catacombs. As I write this now, I'm realizing how crazy we sound. It was worth it. The Paris Catacombs are massive, first off. 6 million bodies' worth of bones are stacked within in amazing walls to create paths. The entire trip through takes about an hour and a half, because you're walking, at a guess, 2 miles, first through old quarries, and then through the catacombs themselves. It was dark, damp, and filled with death, and one of the coolest things I've seen. After that, we found a bakery and a grocery store nearby, where we got food for a ... read more

Hello, Paris! Another day of travel. These come more often towards the end of this trip, if you haven't noticed. I woke up early this morning to take Marie's dog Beau on a run. It was actually fantastic; I didn't know the area, but he knew exactly where to go, so I was able to just follow him. He obviously enjoyed being out in the woods, and I wasn't complaining about having a guide. We then flew out of London on an early flight, but due to time difference and some serious delays at both Heathrow and Charles de Gaulle, we didn't actually get to our hotel until about 3. We're staying in an apartment the hotel owns. When I say apartment, I don't mean a presidential suite. I mean this is literally a flat in ... read more

Took a train to the city near Picadilly. Don't really know how I got to (t)here. I got some pictures on my phone... Honestly, this entire trip has been cliches and songs left and right (I can't even tell you how many times the phrases "When in Rome..." and "Rome wasn't built in a day" were said when we were there). The quoted song to open this one is also fully accurate, at least for those opening lines. I have no idea how the train got to London, but we were near Picadilly. And I do have a lot of pictures on my phone. Anyway, today we had a wonderful day of sun which was then not sunny and then started raining and the weatherman had apparently lied to us. Oh well. We started it off ... read more

London apparently has 230 days of rain a year. I suppose we couldn't avoid all of them. We did only get poured on for about an hour, though, then we had sun for the rest of the day. We took an early train in to Waterloo Station, which is really ideally located in the middle of everything that tourists always want to see. The London Eye sits right outside the station. Across the Thames was sitting the Parliament Building, to which Big Ben is attached. Hiding behind that was Westminster Abbey, from where it was an easy walk along St. James' Park to Buckingham Palace. Beyond the palace was Hyde Park, which led us straight to Harrod's Department Store. Which, by the way, was huge, expensive, glorious, wonderful, overwhelming, and awesome. Also they had delicious food. ... read more
