South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu June 21st 2009

The day to leave for Machu Picchu finally arrived. I had been looking forward for this since I booked the trip. To get to Machu Picchu my group took a train from Ollantaytambo. THe train was quite nice. We even were served a snack (small sandwich and dessert roll) as well as a small beverage. The train followed the river (which I cannot remember the name of at the moment) to Machu Picchu. On the way were were able to see part of the Inca Trail, and some ruins. THe train slowed down a bit by each ruin, but unfortunately I was on the wrong side of the train to take any good pictures of these ruins. Our local guide was able to tell us a bit about each location though so that was nice. The ... read more

After spending one day in Cusco, we departed towards Ollantaytambo. Before departing the hotel, we met another local tour guide for the day. We boarded our bus with our day packs, and duffels towards Ollantaytambo. Our guide talked a lot of the drive about the different places we were passing. We also stopped at a few different Incan ruins on the way. In Incan times, the royal family was very seperate from the army so you could see at many of the ruins the seperation. Our local guide also talked about the Incan baths. Incans only bathed a few times a year. Water still runs in many of the baths, and it was as cold as glacier water. Must be the reason for never bathing. The baths were suppose to be a sacred event to help ... read more

Waking up and already being in Cusco was a great feeling. There was also a festival going on for Corpis Cristi. The hotel gave us a map of the immediate area showing different churches, and plazas that might be interesting to see. Lisa and I were very excited to explore the city. The first plaza we saw appeared to have a few protesters, but since we do not speak fluent spanish, we weren´t sure what they were saying. THe protesting ended really fast too. We continued our walk around to the main plaza. There were so many people in the plaza. It was crazy. THe churches are also beautiful. It looked like some kind of ceramony was going on when we arrived. We tried to get a little closer to at least see what was happening. ... read more

I´ll try to finish up Lake Titikaka quickly. Dinner was amazing. Gladys spoke maybe 20 words of English, Spanish, and their local language. Her neice spoke a little bit of Spanish as well. Between Lisa and I, we used French (some of the words are similar), our limited knowledge of Spanish, and Enlgish to communicate with Gladys and her neice. We were able to talk about the sports we play, our age, and where we were from. Our dinner consisted of a vegetable soup with potatoes, and a rice dish with more potatoes and vegetables. Both were really good. Our local tour guide gave us a sheet with a few words in english, spanish and their local language. We made an attempt to Gladys that the meal was really good in their native language, but I ... read more

The last few days have been amazing. On the 8th we flew LAN airlnes to Julicaca. Still have to work on my fear of flying. I was really scared when I realized we did not have a direct flight to Julicaca. The planes here also make weird noises on take off. Plus Cusco is right in the mountains, so landing here means the planes wings almost touch the mountain sides. Anyways, we eventually landed at one of the smallest airports I have ever been to at Julicaca. We immediately boarded a private bus to Puno. PUno is right on the coast of Lake Titikaka. The altitude here is about 2 miles high I believe. Our tour guide told us to drink coca tea to help with the altitude. The tea is made from coca leaves which ... read more

Peru is so much fun. I am so exhuasted that I can´t even remember what trip details I gave last time. Hopefully I don´t bore anyone who might be reading this. We had a slow moving morning on Saturday. Walked out with cameras, the hostel address (per advice of fellower travelers) and a small amount of money. It´s amazing being able to walk out of your hostel and see the ocean. Unfortunately the weather is cloudy and hazy now. We left in search for breakfast having no idea where a cafe would be. We wondered along the clifs of Barranco for a while. Our initial idea was to eat at the cafe´s along the beach, but it looked as if they were all closed. Evenutally we turned east and found a main road to walk along, ... read more

I made it to Peru. The second flight had bumps all the way. I was so happy about that. We had a horrible movie, but luckily the 17/18 hour trip went by really fast. The airport was a typial non first world country. Walked out, and like Nigeria, there was a swarm of people waiting. Some had signs, but of course we didn´t see our driver right away. Walked around a bit, and eventually our hotel taxi driver appeared. Everyone was really friendly on our search too. Arrived at the hostel 30-40 minutes later. We definately thought we would be driving north so to find ourselves driving south made us hope we were still going our hostel. Eventually we made it. THe hostel itself looks nice from the outside. THe front of our hostel over ... read more
