Ominous Beginnings... It would be sufficed to say that 2010 and I did not get off on the right foot. It was as if from the dawn of the new year the Fates shifted their gaze upon me and decided to rain down a hail of mischief and torment directly upon my weak mortal self. I have been astounded at the multiple (and seemingly never ending levels) "rock-bottom" possess. My previous lives have equipped and fortified in me a firm "grin and bear it" mentality and ability to function well in even the most dire of circumstances, but these past couple months have truly tested my Pollyanna complex. The "glad-game" has become an illusion that I can merely attempt to cling desperately onto. I am not usually one for pessimistic or paranoid thinking, but considering the ... read more

Where to begin? The holidays here were strange ones... Beijing has felt oddly empty for the past week or so, as many of my loyal companions have returned to their perspective homes for the holidays. My little apartment has been mourning the absence of my dear roommate, though I admit I have found it quite easy to remain tidy and manage the household with only myself to pick up after. Gearing up for the holidays was tricky as I knew I would alone, and was really at a loss over how to celebrate... until a chance encounter and job offer landed in my lap. Last weekend I received a call on my mobile in the wee hours of the morning (most agents' favorite time to ring) and what I made out through my sleep fogged brain ... read more

It has been brought to my attention that my updates have been severely lacking in over a month, and for that I do apologize, and offer the excuse that I have merely been living and thus have found it difficult to imagine you would find my day-to-days entertaining. I believe life has officially switched from novel to normal, which (unless I was an ego-maniac) does not bode well for consistent descriptions. This explanation did not fly with Mama B. so another update you shall have... but I cannot vouch for the content. Another year of my existence on this earth flew by, and I am now hopefully a little wiser with the addition of time. Being away from home I had expected to allow the day to pass by unnoticed and merely take stock and look ... read more

Well, I have come in as close contact to a typical "Chinese Tour Package" as I ever care to come to. My most recent burst of stardom entailed me participating in an instructional film on the subject of travel. I reunited with my old crew (and some cast) to portray typical situations that the average tourist should expect to encounter. My character (Linda) was responsible for booking a tour to Tibet through an agency. This tedious scene seriously testing my acting chops, as I had to convey great enthusiasm over partaking in an organized event (which as we all know is something that I have always loathed) and now after seven months of life here, have really come to detest as I am constantly surrounded by these flag and mega-phone lead brightly hatted groups. (This distaste ... read more

Well winter has officially arrived! The first of November Beijing was blessed with a large downfall of snow. It was quite surreal to awake and be greeted by the sight of flakes falling thickly and blanketing the city. Obviously I reacted in typical Lindsie fashion and began jumping around and screaming for all the boys to wake up and "be as excited as me". They stared in sleepy bewilderment as I bounced off the walls, running to the balcony to stick my head out and catch snowflakes on my tongue, and then rushing back inside to defrost. Eventually I calmed down enough to make some fresh coffee for the lads and we then all sat on the couch, sipped our hot coffee, listened to Christmas songs and watched the snow fall. Apparently that was the most ... read more

Well Simon finally came through and we were able to host a gloriously gourmet evening that consisted of a Swedish meatball dinner party! I have been miffed for quite some time over his empty promises and descriptions of his cooking talents, so last week I finally put my foot down and declared that if I was not served meatballs by the end of that weekend I would find such cruel and cunning ways to make his life as miserable as possible! After a few quick (verbal) examples of what I was capable of, he was soon convinced that we should settle upon Saturday as the chosen time. Early Saturday morning found us giddily embarking off to Carrefour to procure the necessary items, which is always an amusing and slightly stressful quest when attempting to cook a ... read more

I had my first bike ride in Beijing... and it was in typical Chinese wife style. I had met a friend for an early morning coffee, before he had to head out for work, and I was lamenting over my (still) bike-less existence. Looking out into the beautiful October morning really rubbed raw as perfect bike weather... it's been torture to have all this unemployed "free time" yet no real (ie: cheap) way of enjoying my hours. He gallantly offered to let me "hitch a ride" home with him and so I laughingly perched behind him on the bicycle and we set off with the rest of the work rush out into the new day. It was great fun (though slightly precarious) to balance myself behind him as we zoomed through the crowds and traffic. I ... read more

Well we have seen the Motherland through her 60th anniversary... but only through television. It's a tad incomprehensible how a government party "for the people" restricts access to the celebration so totally. Obviously, numbers and safety to play a roll, but it got to the point where hotels were emptied for the holiday week, some streets cleared of residents, and then those residents allowed to remain where instructed to keep back from their windows and under no circumstances were they to peer out to view the parade. As this was the first "big" celebration I've been present for, I was quite eager to witness the event. However, I found it extremely difficult to discover any/all information for the anniversary... I couldn't even find out when the parade started! After more careful sleuthing among my Chinese friends, ... read more

I had a most taxing of days... For starters, my phone has been on the fritz for some time now, my microphone must be broken as callers cannot hear me. For the time being I had contented myself with just using that blasted chunk of plastic as a text messaging device to get by. Overall it hasn't been too much of a bother, but today's circumstances pushed me right over the edge into a deplorable state of desperation and self loathing for not having dealt with finding a replacement sooner. Some of you may know that I had been recruited to apply for a position with Hainan airlines, and the interview was scheduled for early this morning. Thinking ahead, I had requested the address be texted to me in Chinese characters to ensure a smooth arrival ... read more

What I previously considered to be the near impossible has occurred! I finally have internet in my apartment... it's almost like I'm a real person now. This week has been a settling into a new phase... I've been motivated to clean, cook and complete tasks like my internet mission impossible! It was the blasted cable after all. Now, I am not totally useless, and did try to explain my suspicion over the seemingly faulty cord to many of the various servicemen who attempted to connect us, but had been assured that there was no reason to suspect the cord. (Besides the fact that it looked broken, fraying and just generally useless). Regardless - I have finally discovered a truly gifted and helpful IT man and I would praise his name if I knew it. New cable ... read more
