Stuck inside sheltering from torrential rain on Isla Bastimentos off the coast of Panama. Might catch up on my blog till the rain stops!

After a relatively short bus trip of only 4 hours, trundling through the flat expanse of nothingness that is the altiplano, your first glimpse of La Paz hits you like a smack in the face. The city is nestled in a huge valley amongst towering mountains and just sprawls up all sides like a swarm of locust. It’s a breathtaking sight as you wind your way down into the city centre at the lowest point of the valley (a very handy thing to remember when navigating the urban maze of La Paz is to just walk downhill and you’ll eventually get to the main street). Since arriving in Bolivia me and Yvonne had stayed in some chronically basic (but very cheap!) hostals so en route to La Paz we agreed to up-grade our digs a bit ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon June 10th 2010

Well, my promise at being more prolific with my blog writing has failed miserably. I am now going to describe events that occurred about 5 weeks ago in Peru while I sit in a hostal at the shore of the very beautiful Lake Tekapo on the South Island of New Zealand! So this is going to be as brief as possible…. The best place to go and see the rare Andean Condor is at a place called Cruz del Condor in the mighty Colca canyon a couple of hours outside of the picturesque city of Arequipa. Peru’s second largest city is surrounded by 3 huge volcanoes which offer amazing scenery wherever you wander in the city as well as some great sites in the city itself such as the monastry and the wonderful main plaza. ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu June 6th 2010

To be honest, I had anticipated my first long distance night bus with a strong sense of dread and a hint of anxiety. Being 6’ 5” tall has many advantages in life but when it comes to long distance bus travel it’s a curse. However, if you want to travel in South America on a backpackers budget you don’t have a choice. It really is impossible to get to grips with the size of this land mass until you stumble off of a 20 hour bus ride, bleary eyed and as stiff as a corpse, look at a map and realize you’ve just covered a distance comparable to walking down to the local shop back home! As I write this I am currently 2 hours into a 17 hour journey from Puerto Iguazu to Buenos Aires; ... read more

Landing in Lima After a very pleasant flight from Panama city we arrived in Lima around 2 pm and managed to reach our hostal just in time to see the 2nd half of the champions league final. We heard Lima was subject to a constant grey mist for 9 months of the year and we weren’t disappointed. For the full 3 days we stayed in Lima I don’t remember witnessing a mere 10 minutes of sunshine. Although I have to say I was relieved to stay somewhere cool after the torrid heat and humidity of panama. I finally got to wear the jumper id been carrying around for the last 4 weeks! One important thing to note on arriving into Peru is to keep the piece of paper they stamp at the passport control as we ... read more

Due to a combination of my chronic malaise and infrequent wi-fi I now find myself about 4 weeks and 3 countries behind in my travel blog. This has led me to the inevitable conclusion of condensing a couple of weeks travel into one blog or risk just giving up completely (something which I would eventually regret). So, here we go! We arrived in the city of David eagerly anticipating an extraordinary stay at the infamous Purple House hostel. Lonely planet gives this place an outrageously good review but I was seriously disappointed. Stuck out in the dreary suburbs the purple monstrosity stands out like an elephant in a chicken coop. The reason it received such high praise was the reason I hated this place with a passion; the owner. She lives in the hostel and treats ... read more

THE ISLANDS OF BOCAS DEL TORO We crossed the border at Sixaiola. This was the first border crossing we attempted on our own so given the chaotic nature of the last border we were a bit anxious at the prospect of getting into Panama on our todd with about 10 words of Spanish between us.. However, it turned out to be easy really. This crossing is for pedestrians only so you must walk across a rickety old railway bridge over a river and into Panama. Once your on the other side there are plenty of locals eager to guide you through the process; hoping you’ll use their taxi to get where you going when you’re finished. If you fly out of Costa Rica there is a $26 departure tax, but it cost us nothing to leave ... read more

Its a great feeling waking up in the morning and just picking somewhere to head off to wondering what adventures await! This was the not so unpleasant predicament we found ourselves in when we left San Jose and hopped on a bus down to our selected destination of Puerto Viejo De Talamanca on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. As we had missed the white sandy beaches and chilled out feel of Roatan Island in Honduras (due to that damn volcano) we felt the need for a bit of beach time. The bus to Puerto Viejo usually takes about 4 hours but due to a mudslide wiping out a big chunk of road on the mountain pass we head to take a detour adding an extra hour and a half onto the journey. We got talking ... read more

It's been nearly 3 weeks from when I'm writing this since we celebrated Yvonne's birthday in San Jose. A combination of no internet and my chronic laziness led to me not updating my blog for a while!! Alot happens in 3 weeks when you're constantly on the move like we are so remembering specifics of one city you stayed in a while back becomes fiendishly difficult. However, I will do my best to recollect the final 2-3 days of our tour with Intrepid Travel, the end of which would signal the real beginning of our adventure! We stayed in Gaudy's Hostel on the outskirts of the city about a 40 minute walk from the main center. It was an ok place, near to a large super market and with all the usual freebies; wi-fi, pool table, ... read more

La Fortuna and the invisible volcano… After two wonderful nights in Monteverde we set of around 8 in the morning heading for a small town nestled at the base of Arenal volcano called La Fortuna. I have to mention the fantastic drive down the mountains as we approached Lake Arenal; possibly one of the most impressive drives I’ve ever been on. Unfortunately, due to excessive alcohol intake the night before, many of the other people on the tour didn’t appreciate the winding decent from Monteverde and were more concerned with not vomiting on each other in the back of the mii-bus, much to my amusement! Once we arrived at the western shore of the lake we boarded a small boat to take us across the lake, saving us about 3 hours of road time. Crossing the ... read more

EVERYBODY WANTS TO GO TO COSTA RICA...! After an early start to catch the 7.30 ferry (it's very punctual and waits for no man) from Ometepe Island we made are way by taxi to the Costa Rica border. As we came to within 3-4 miles of the border crossing we began to notice a few trucks parked on the side of the road. After a short time a few became a solid line of trucks and we were starting to wonder if we would ever reach the border line! The road we were on wasn't a huge road and the conga line of trucks pretty much blocked one whole side of the road so our taxi would rocket up the wrong side of the road until we encountered another vehicle coming from the border. When this ... read more
