Home at Last. We left Hammond, LA at about 7:30 this AM and arrived at our house about 12:30 - - short day! The trailer is unloaded, cleaned out and put away. Took a few pictures of magnolia blossoms at a rest area in Alabama. A fellow from Washington State came by while I was taking pictures and commented that he had never seen magnolia blossoms. I asked if he had ever smelled magnolia blossoms and he said no. So I pulled one down close for him to take a whiff. He said he had always thought that they had no odor but today he thought that they smelled a little like jasmine. He was pretty excited over that little tidbit. This is the end of the blogging for this trip. Will pick it up on ... read more

Shorter day today - - only about 430 miles. Stopped in Hammond, LA about 4:30 - - partly because Bob was afraid that if we went any further, we'd decide to just go the rest of the way (about another 310 miles). We are in what used to be a KOA Kampground, now an independent. It is nice, with lots of trees, grass, and a pond with free fishing. Can you believe that we don't have a single fishing pole with us? We must be getting old! The rain finally caught up with us - - drove for almost 4 hours in the rain this AM - - no really heavy down pours, just steady light rain. You could tell that east Texas has had a lot of rain as all the creeks are full, there ... read more

Another long day - - ~530 miles. Only one stop of interest at the LBJ Historic Site Park near Johnson City, TX. We got there too late to get a car pass to drive out to the ranch so just took an obscured photo through some trees from across a creek. Gena did get stamped there and bought a patch. The ocatillo and prickley pear were in bloom at the KOA in Van Horn so I took a couple close-ups. There were lots of yellow wild flowers in the median along I-10 so took one photo of them. Looked like rain, so we put the umbrella in the car and successfully kept it from raining more than just a sprinkle. Haven't thought about tomorrow yet - - maybe another long day.... read more

Lots of miles today - - about 440. Started day by driving from Willcox, AZ south to Chiricahua National Monument. The drive down is through a very dry desert devoid of trees. The road into the park from AZ 186 is only about a mile long. As soon as we entered the canyon, there were lots of trees, including a few pines. The rock formations were pretty spectacular with quite a few "balancing" rocks that look ready to topple over. There was a 29' vehicle length restriction and I was too lazy to unhook, so we didn't get to do the entire loop - - maybe next time. Drove back to I-10 and headed east. Ate lunch at the NM welcome center. Went through El Paso about 2:30 which was too early to stop, so drove ... read more

OOPS ! ! ! Got the right caption on the wrong picture in our last blog - - several other mistakes as well: Death Valley and Lone Pine are BOTH in CA, NOT NV. The Saguaros that were so plentiful were north of Phoenix, not between Lone Pine & Tulare. What we saw between Lone Pine and Tulare were Jashua Trees - - at least we are still able to recognize when we had a senior moment. Here is the picture of the fighter coming out of Rainbow Canyon:... read more

It has been awhile since we were last able to blog - - so this one is going to cover a lot of ground! Left Pahrump before 8 AM in order to beat the heat in Death Valley (it was forcasted to be 107). We were able to stand at 282' below sealevel and see snow capped mountains over 12000' high. It is only ~130 miles from the lowest point to the highest point in the continental US. We stopped at a big pullout on the way down into the Panamint Valley to cool our brakes and had lunch. That hill dropped something around 4500' in about 11 miles of curvy road. After climbing out of Panamint Valley, we stopped at Father Crowley View Point to take pictures of the road we had just driven down ... read more

Since our last blog, we have left Glendale, UT and made it to Lone Pine, CA. Along the way we took UT 14 from UT 89 over to I-15 then south on I-15 to Las Vegas. We stopped at Kolob Canyon (part of Zion NP) and it was spectacular though not as extensive as the Virgin River Canyon in the main part of the park. The drive over UT 14 was really pretty with LOTS of snow above 7500 ft. The pass was at 9910 ft. The interstate ran down through the Virgin River Canyon in AZ. It was spectacular with many curves that looked like they had to lead into a tunnel and then didn't do that. In Las Vegas, we stayed at Circus Circus KOA campground right on the strip. Gena and I took ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Bryce Canyon April 18th 2009

Went to Bryce Canyon NP today. This is a really beautiful park! Very different from anything else we've seen. They had snow day before yesterday and a lot of it was left on the ground. The moisture seems to enhance the color of the rocks. We took lots of photos and video. The weather was clear, breezy, and occasionally a little chilly. Visibility from the pull-offs and view points was well over 80 miles. Charlie wasn't feeling well by the time we headed back to the camp ground and didn't have dinner with us. We had left a crock pot with chicken breasts, unions, and mild salsa simmering while we were gone. Boy was that good! In addition to Bryce Canyon NP we also went through Red Canyon NM. ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Zion National Park April 18th 2009

Hi All: Sorry about the missing photos in yesterday's blog. I'm told that the ISP changed servers last night and lost a BUNCH of stuff, apparently including our photos. Today is Fri, Apr 17. We drove from Page, AZ to Glendale, UT where we set up camp for a two night stay. About 2 PM we loaded up the van and drove over to Zion NP. We thought the approach was incredible, but were blown away by the views in canyon proper. I'll try to put a few of the photos on here - - but I gotta tell you, they do NOT come anywhere close to the real thing !!!! If you haven't seen this park, you owe it to yourself to put it at or near the top of you todo list. Bryce Canyon ... read more

Woke up in Grand Canyon NP to 17 degree weather, but sunny. We ate breakfast, closed up the trailer and went to all the view points between Grand Canyon Village and the East end of the park. Met up with Charlie and Kerry at about 11 AM at the east end. The panoramas were incredible!!! Even got to watch a boat run the rapids. The rapid was much rougher than it looked !!! See photos attached for an idea of what the scenery looked like. We left the park and drove north on hwy 89 to Page, AZ. After checking into a campground, we went to see the Glenn Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. Truly magnificent. Plan to go Zion NP tomorrow and then Bryce NP the day after.... read more
