South America » Bolivia March 8th 2016

For a country I knew very little about, Bolivia has knocked my socks off! More rich in culture (people, food, etc.) than Brazil and some of the most amazing scenery outside of Patagonia makes one of South America's poorest countries an absolute gem to visit. Despite spending just over a week in Bolivia, we cover a lot of ground - from Potosi to Uyuni and then onto La Paz. It's also our first real introduction to high altitude (4,000m). In Potosi, we embark on a tour of the mines, providing an opportunity to witness gruelling working conditions. Low ceilings and steep, muddy passageways, crawling through narrow shafts at altitude, exposed to a lot of noxious gases and dust deep inside the mountains. We visit the miners market and stock up on dynamite, coca leaves and snacks ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta March 4th 2016

Upon leaving Brazil, we visit Iguazu Falls from the Argentinian side - unlike the Brazilian side which offered panoramic views of the falls, the Argentinian side demonstrates the immense power and force of the water. The best way to explore the park is on foot, with plenty of boardwalks and a nice train ride which takes you up to the Devil's Throat viewpoint. The sheer volume of cascading waterfalls amongst a magnificent natural setting is truly awe-inspiring. A short (and very wet!) jet boat ride tops off a great day at one of planet Earth's most spectacular natural wonders. We spend our next few days traversing the landscapes around Salta, a city in the ... read more

South America » Brazil February 24th 2016

We arrive in Rio de Janeiro for the biggest party of the year, Carnival, and the city is in meltdown! Everybody joins in the festivities, with vibrant street parties and parades epitomising the Carnival atmosphere. We luckily manage to pick up last minute tickets for the Sambadrome, undoubtedly the highlight of our time in Rio. The best schools participate in a dazzling spectacle full of lively music, epic floats, lavish costumes and dancing, with the party lasting all night! During our time in Rio, we also visit Sugar Loaf mountain for sunset, offering great views of the city. We walk along and swim at the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. We take a nice hike up the Two Brothers and experience walking through a 'favela'. The views from Christ the Redeemer are equally impressive as ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia February 1st 2016

As I stare out the window on board a flight to Buenos Aires, I reflect upon my last month spent travelling around Patagonia (Chile and Argentina). I conclude it's undoubtedly the most beautiful place/ region on earth that I've ever witnessed. From the Chilean fjords to Tierra del Fuego, beyond which lies only Antarctica, to Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares national parks, the scenery is jaw-dropping at every turn. Mountains, glaciers, emerald lakes and pure wilderness all feature in Patagonia's landscapes. For this part of my trip, I decide to try overlanding with adventure travel company Dragoman, traversing a colossal 4,250 kilometres in just over 3 weeks on their purpose built expedition vehicle. This enables us to get off the beaten track quite often, in other words, go camping and hiking in some of the ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra December 22nd 2015

Having spent a couple of weeks in Malaysia, I was keen to explore the less-visited Indonesian island of Sumatra - which promised an enchanting mix of culture, nature and wildlife . Our trip begins in the small remote jungle community of Tangkahan, where we spend the afternoon bathing and feeding elephants in a nearby river . From here we traverse along bumpy roads to Bukit Lawang and embark on a jungle trek in Gunung Leuser National Park . A memorable wildlife encounter unfolds as we get up close and personal with six orangutans (three mothers and babies) in the wild . It's incredible how human-like some of their behavioural patterns and expressions are !! Trekking through the jungles of this large National Park that is home to orangutans, gibbons, monkeys and more is certainly one of ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah December 7th 2015

Borneo is the largest island in Asia and the third largest in the world . For the past couple of weeks we've been traversing the Sabah region, filled with incredible wildlife and nature . Ever since I seen pictures of the orangutan I have dreamt of visiting this island . We were lucky enough to see orangutans in the wild and plenty more at Sepilok rehabilitation centre, set up to reintroduce these wonderful creatures into the wild . The organgutans in Borneo are solitary and elusive creatures, but at the same time highly inquisitive and playful . Watching young orangutans play at the outdoor nursery in their specially constructed jungle gym was a fascinating experience . Borneo has a large number of endemic species, not least the proboscis monkey (easily identifiable because of its unusually large ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah December 3rd 2015

On 1st/2nd December, we became the first Irish people to summit Mount Kinabalu (highest peak in SE Asia) via the new Ranau trail, newly reopened since a devastating earthquake last June. Up until the eleventh hour we didn't know if we were going to be allowed to climb based on our guides safety assessment. Thankfully we were and the mountain Gods couldn't have given us better weather, with clear starry skies followed by an amazing sunrise. Meeting Sabah's Minister for Tourism and being part of TV/video footage on this historic opening day was a truly memorable experience. The first day of the trek involved a steep 6k climb up through the Borneo jungle, which was really tough in the baking heat. We arrived at our overnight stop called Laban Rata about 3pm, where we sat out ... read more

Asia » Nepal November 22nd 2015

The chaotic city of Kathmandu and the serenity of the Himalayas are quite simply worlds apart . Nepal has had its fair share of troubles this year , firstly with a devastating earthquake and more recently the ongoing fuel crisis . Now more than ever it relies on tourists and trekkers - so with that in mind off we go ! After leaving Kathmandu we head to a small village called Bandipur where we play a game of football with local kids , undoubtedly a trip highlight . Pokhara (on the shores of Phewa lake) is the starting point for most treks in the Annapurna region , it has a much more laid back and chilled vibe compared to Kathmandu . We meet our intrepid group of fellow travellers from Australia , Canada and China - ... read more
